It wasn't just a sports game. They were going for a vacation in Santiago. Many of the boys had never left their home in Montevideo before and were eager for adventure and independence. Out of the 40 passengers, only about 17 of them were part of the Old Christian's rugby team or directly related personnel (ie. the team doc). Many of the rest of the passengers were family and friends the players invited to go on the trip. They chartered the flight, so the more tickets purchased made the overall cost of the flight less expensive for each ticket holder. Most of these other passengers were really going in order to take a vacation. For Numa and Pancho (neither of which were rugby players), along with their other friends who died, like Gaston (who was a player), were wanting to have one last hurrah together before they entered careers and adulthood, which would leave little time for them to hang out and enjoy the fun and games of their youths. Nando (who was a rugby player) invited his mother and sister because he'd been to Chile the year before for a rugby game and wanted to make it a cheap treat for them, eager to show them around Chile. Others were going to visit friends or even love interests. Or just live it up and party with Chilean girls they might happen to meet. Javier and Liliana (aunt and uncle to one of the rugby players) were going only as an inexpensive 12th wedding anniversary weekend getaway and likely weren't going to catch the rugby game anyway. So yeah, the game was just a fun excuse, but not the only thing that sold so many tickets for that plane trip. Also, it was their sports training and discipline (while not everyone was a member of the Old Christian's rubgy team, others had played in other sports at their own schools, whether rugby or soccer) that played a significant role in their survival and eventual escape. They were able to work as a team (which was vital in those first 10 days after the crash) and had the mental strength to push through difficulties. Rugby is a very rough and demanding sport. While nothing could have prepared them for what they went through, it certainly gave them an advantage. When one of them faltered, the team would come in to get him back on his feet, whether physically or mentally. In the books written about the Andes miracle/disaster, the survivors often talk about how their time in sports, especially rugby, helped to keep them strong and unified and they tried to spread that teamwork/togetherness mentality to those who never played sports. That, along with love and faith. Outside of the plane crew, the only person that wasn't in any way associated with the rugby team and family/friends and was a complete stranger was a middle aged woman who, completely last minute, managed to grab a spare seat on the plane. All in order to get to her daughter's wedding in Chile a day earlier. She died not long after the crash from exposure and her injuries.

Thank you for switching back to Spanish, when the reaction started, I was like "ooooh no"! I speak Spanish, but have watched it in both languages, and the spoken language highlights how good and emotive the acting was. One of the best movies ever!

The lesson of the film was that in order to survive they all had to learn to be a tem and take care of each other. Hence the importance of the scene at the beginning, when the other players are mad at Roberto for no passing the rugby ball. He learned to be a team player and pass the ball and then they were saved.

Amazing reaction, thank you for sharing it. Thank you as well for changing it into Spanish. A few facts: Nando made quite a recovery because even when his head swelled with the impact, it was facing the cold metal of the plane when he was left outside because everybody was thinking he was dead or about to die. The cold served as a very cold ice pack to heal the swelling in his head and make him better. Diego Storm (who died during the avalanche) was another medicine student thought after the first night it was a good idea to bring Nando to a warmer area inside the plane. They really tried to make a fire but the winds were very strong and keep putting it down. Also, they didn't have much to burn and it would burn instantly, so instead they gave up the idea to make a fire and instead putting as many layers of clothing as possible. The idea Nando had to want to eat the bodies came out of anger that the pilots' negligence got them to be stuck in the mountain helpless. Let's not forget he lost his mum, sister and 2 best friends. Nando's anger it's what pushed him to want to get out of there no matter what. They were peeing black because of severe dehydration, the snow took ages to melt and the ice was burning their mouths and gums. Numa, when Marcelo died said: they have been waiting for a moment like that, a moment of peace. Marcelo after finding out the government stopped looking for them got very depressed and kind of lost hope. Some of the survivors say that they think when Marcelo was trapped in the snow during the avalanche he let himself die because he could not fulfill his promise that rescue was coming and all of those people were in that plane because he planned the trip. The guilt and despair kill him, the avalanche was just his way to let go of that burden. Fito was the one who thought of making water, glasses to protect their eyes from the reflexion of the sun in the snow and also chose the bodies that would be eaten along with his cousins Daniel and Eduardo. Fito was called the inventor. The cousins how the call themselves were those who carried the biggest burden of all, to know which friend they were eaten and cut that friend to be eaten. Carlitos, the young person who crashed into the suitcases with his car at the airport, was a spoiled child who came from a wealthy family. He was very spoiled, he even had a nanny, after this trip his perspective of life absolutely changed. In the plane, he was in charge of making sure there were not drafts in the plane or reduce the possibility of drafts using the suitcases and plane seats, he was very good at it. He also was the one who made the sleeping bag that Nando and Roberto used to protect them and sleep during their walk to Chile. They had so so so so many cigarettes because in Chile cigarettes were scarce and Javier Methol, the man who lost his wife in the avalanche, worked in a Tabaco company so thought it was a good business to take a lot of cigarettes and sell them in Chile. In those years if you went to Chile with a few dollars or had some out of the market products you were a millionaire. Chile was going through a horrible economical crisis. Numa did not get injured like that in the real events, someone walked on his leg by accident because of the lack of space in the plane and because he was not eating his body did not have much strength to recover from the bruise. He was the last one who died and his death pushed Nando and Roberto to say fuck it lets do this, let's save ourselves because no one else is going to. The others 14 left in the plane also had a plan b in case Nando and Canessa did not make it which was putting together another team to hike the mountains. The actual survivors loved this version more than the 1993 version, because it doesn't idolise the survivors as the heroes, instead recognises and considers those who died and their memory. In the alive version some families did not give permission to use the real rugby player's names. In this versions all the families were happy and satisfied with the way the story was told and gave permission. Reporters kept digging in a very nasty way how they survived, what did they eat, etc. The survivors were very secretive for respect to their death friends families, also ashamed and worry their families friends and the country would judge them. They had a press conference were they answered to reporters questions ONCE instead that addressing the situation 100000 times to every reporter who asked. They asked the reporters and people for respect of their choices considering the very harsh circumstances they had to face. Pancho Delgado (Numa's best friend in the movie was they one who spoke in this conference) He said that Jesus gave his blood and body to save the world so the survivors took their friends bodies and blood for them to be save. Pancho also asked the reporters to please not spoiled with yellow press and judgement an act that was sacred to them and something that was done for pure survival instinct. The actual survivors made a Kameo in the movie Nando, opened the door to the actor who played him at the airport, Roberto Canessa was one of the Drs in the Hospital when they got rescued, Coche Inciarte reading a newspaper in the bar Numa and his friends were, Daniel Fernandez in the church, Numa's real life nephew passing by Numa's house when he was entering and Carlitos, who read all the survivors names, were is different scenes. The house shown as Numa's house in the movie was actually his real house back in 1972. The reason why Zerbino would not leave without the suitcase it's because he hoped that tokens from the death people, like personal belongings such as jewelry, rosaries, ID's, letters written before dying were taking back to give to their families. That actually happened the real survivor refused to leave without the suitcase and when back home he personally went to each of the families homes of the passengers that did not survive to give them something that belonged to them, so the families even when not having their bodies back they could have something to remember them by. In the movie isn't shown but the rescue was in 2 stages. They had to rescue one lot of people that day and the next lot the day after. Some survivors had to stay another night waiting for the other helicopters to arrive. Those left behind the first day were left with food and a team of rescuers. A survivor said most of the rescuers were scared of them after seeing all the human remaining all over the place and made sure the survivors knew they had a gun. Also the smell and dirt was unbearable. Only one rescuer Sergio Diaz, I believe he is called, stayed in the plane with them that night, ate with them and advised them about what they were going to face after everybody knew they have eaten human beings. There is a man who was part of the search team that were looking for the plane during the rescue missions. His name is Claudio Lucero and he had made quite strong arguments in the media about how he believes the 27 people left alive in the plane after the crash planned and plotted maliciously all the events that happened to them to gain fame. He states they could have left the mountain days before the day they got rescued, but chose to stay longer and go through hunger and lost to become famous and earn money.

Your questions about how they could have crashed, especially in a route (called the Planchon Pass) through the mountains that is regularly traversed, all boils down to a series of very bad decisions and possibly pressures placed on the pilots. The pilot had flown the pass across the Andes more than 2 dozen times, too. The plane originally set out from Uruguay on October 12th, but the plane was grounded in Mendoza, Argentina. The reason being that storms were making the Planchon Pass through the Andes mountains too dangerous to fly. They also had no other route they could take for a variety of reasons, but foremost is their plane model's altitude limitations and the Planchon Pass having mountains low enough for them to fly over. So the crew and passengers stayed the night in Argentina. The next morning they were still getting less than ideal weather conditions from morning and into the afternoon. They were faced with a new problem. The plane the rugby team chartered was military, flown by airforce members. As a military plane, they were not allowed to remain on foreign land for more than 24 hours. They had to take flight and land in a different country. So the pilots were faced with two choices. The first being they cancel the flight to Santiago, Chile and return home to Montevideo, Uruguay. This, of course, meant all the tickets would be refunded, losing out on that revenue and wasting a ton of fuel and time for nothing. While not able to be confirmed, it wouldn't be surprising if there was pressure on the pilots from their bosses or the military in general to avoid such an outcome. If they didn't cancel the flight, they only had the second option, which was to just go for the Planchon Pass and hope for the best getting to Chile. They consulted other pilots coming in from the pass and getting mixed accounts. Some of the Flight 571 passengers, not truly understanding the situation, even goaded them to stop being cowards and get them to Chile already. The survivors in later accounts about the disaster regret their teasing and pressuring the pilots. The pilots obviously chose to head to Chile. This is where the MAJOR bad decisions happened. Firstly, they did not have GPS. Because of the storms, the plane was basically flying through the clouds at the altitude they needed to cruise at to fly about the mountain range. They couldn't see anything ahead or below them. So they were having to rely on instruments, maps, and experience to get through. Just like the mechanic in the movie tried to explain to Numa and friends with the drawing. Normally the Planchon Pass takes a certain amount of time to fully traverse. Like about 20 minutes, I've heard. Once you exit on the other side, the pilot would head for their next landmark, Curico, a city in Chile. At that point, they would turn northward and gradually descend in order to reach the airport in Santiago. This is why the pilot mumbled "We pass Curico" for a bit. For whatever reason (reasons which are often debated by people aware of this story), the pilots calculated wrong and were not paying enough attention to everything that could have warned them of their mistake. When they had only made it halfway through the Planchon Pass, they turned early. If the pass takes 20 minutes, they basically turned at minute 11. They turned northward into the heart of the Andes where the mountains are much, much taller. Now that they were heading into the heart of the Andes, they began suffering far worse turbulence thanks to the storm over the Andes. The pilots, thinking they passed Curico, then began their normal descent and radioed to Santiago. The request to descend was their last radio communication as they dipped below the mountain range. Of course, the lower they got, the more the air thinned and the turbulence threw the plane around. They hit several air pockets which caused them to plummet lower. Once they were clear of the clouds and were below the storm, they could see they were basically surrounded like a horseshoe by mountains. Their engines/propellers struggled to find any lift thanks to the thin air and eventually stalled out. As you saw, just barely got enough vertical climb to clear the lowest mountain crest they could reach, but not high enough. Even if they had made that wall of mountains rather than hit it like what happened, the plane was basically trapped in an unforgiving mountain range, fighting against terrible flying conditions, and completely lost. It would have very likely crashed. They were hopelessly trapped in a bowl of massive mountains their plane couldn't fly over with a stalled plane by that point. So yeah, the pilots had a tough choice and, for whatever reason, went with the riskier option. Whatever made them go with that choice and why they screwed up so bad on the flight over will forever remain a mystery. Some people speculate the pilots could have been under the influence of alcohol. The survivors had reported seeing the flight crew loading alcohol onto the plane from Mendoza and the survivors eventually went on to drinking or using that booze to clean wounds. However, most people discount this possibility. Some speculate the pilot was letting the co-pilot handle things in those bad conditions. The co-pilot was a good pilot, but was being trained by the experienced pilot about that particular route across the Andes. So it is possible that the pilot wasn't overseeing his co-pilot's actions with enough scrutiny. This theory is supported by the fact the co-pilot was the one in contact with Air Traffic Control in both Argentina and then Chile. There is also the theory there could have been some kind of mechanical issue, something the pilots couldn't have been aware of. However, there is nothing to indicate this either and, had they been paying attention, there should have been other instruments available to them that could have indicated something was off. Especially if they had been paying attention to the time and realized they'd only been flying for about half the expected distance. It is all just theory and speculation. All we know is that both pilots made bad decisions and the other didn't catch them. The crash could have been avoided. The crash also happened on Friday the 13th of October. Even some of the survivors remark on and even joke about the date and their luck.

There’s a load of cameos of the actual survivors in the movie, including the guy reading out the names at the end. That’s the real life Carlitos. From memory, real Nando opens the door at the airport, some others appear there too, and in the church, and the bar/pub at the beginning. And the real Roberto is a doctor at the hospital among others. Until now, 2 survivors have passed, the rest are still alive. You should also check out the comparison of the real people vs the actors: the casting of this movie is INSANELY good kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYi7iax_jJ6gjcksi=gWCtp6ESET1OhAPc

The families of the victims that have talked publicly about the means of survival (Valeta, Nogueira, Nicolich), openly voiced their support for the survivors, as soon as the news broke. Other families do talk about the incident, but would rather talk about their deceased loved ones’ life rather than their death or what happened to them after that. And then there’s the ones that are extremely private, specially the ones of the “outsiders” (the military men and Mrs. Mariani).
