Still plenty of cars around with halogen lights.
@mrnmrn12 ай бұрын
Yes, there're hundreds of millions of cars on the roads with halogen lights, and cars are still being made today with them. I'll avoid LED headlights as long as they don't make them user servicable. If a halogen bulb burns out, you can replace it for a couple of $. LED lights don't last forever either, and when they fail, you have to replace the entire headlight for upwards of $800, depending on the maker, the upper price limit is the sky. So I'm fine with halogen headlights. Tail lights are OK with LEDs though, because they are an order of magnitude lower in power, and as such, almost never fail. LED tail lights were already around 20 years ago, and the failure rate is almost zero. For example VW Jetta and VW Golf Plus from 2004 both use LED tail lights. Almost the only reason to replace them is when they crash.
2 ай бұрын
@@mrnmrn1 You don't always need to replace the whole headlight assembly. At least on some BMW lights the led units are indeed replaceable. But that's not always the case. VW led tail lights are known for failing. I've seen led tail light fail also (at least) on M-B, volvo, BMW, Nissan, Ford and Toyota.
@mrnmrn12 ай бұрын
That's nice progression, though I'm pretty sure the LED module still costs about a 50-100 pack of halogen bulbs, especially from BMW. I based my tail light comment on 2 WV Jettas from around 2004-2006 that I know never failed, but I stand to be corrected.
2 ай бұрын
@@mrnmrn1 I think 2004-2006 VW tail lights were fine. They probably changed the supplier or something, because cars made a few years later have them fail very often. About the led units on BMW lights, I'm actually not sure if the actual headlight units can be replaced. But at least drls and indicators are replaceable.

Very interesting film, be sure to watch it with commentary! Amazing processes, for example that the quartz bulbs are cooled (in liquid nitrogen or another coolant?) when they are filled with the inert gas including the halogen. I don't have a car, but there is also a halogen bulb in the headlight of my bike. 🙂
@christopherleubner66332 ай бұрын
Yup its a mix of bromine and krypton.
@Tag-Traeumer2 ай бұрын
@@christopherleubner6633 Yes, the heavier the noble gas, the better. The expensive xenon would be best. I read that the halogen used today is mostly iodine, not bromine, and traces of water are also necessary for the halogen cycle. Halogen lamps, like ordinary incandescent light bulbs, produce the best artificial light, CRI 100, like the sun.
@6612770Ай бұрын
How and when is the gas put into the lamp???
@Tag-TraeumerАй бұрын
@@6612770 Unfortunately, this is not clearly visible. I assume: At 11:28 the air is sucked out and the filament is cleaned by glowing. At 11:51, the quartz glass bulb is cooled to a low temperature, presumably by liquid nitrogen, and then the inert noble gas krypton is introduced with a small addition of jodine and some water vapor before the bulb is melted shut.
