We could learn from Italy's Romulus and Remus and introduce "Reindeer children", who'd be part of the reindeer pack their whole lives, ride the reindeer and protect it once they get old enough. Maybe have them acclimatize to eating lichen etc to save in food costs. It might be tempting especially for those families where the children are less likeable than the pets this would protect. ;) (irony, btw.)

make carnivores a protected species, which are fined heavily if poached. Have a limited amount of "reindeer tags" per season, to steer away from fraud, and then make note of the people that are always maxing out the tags and investigate them for fraud. yes, more tax dollars at work, but less so for the coming seasons as there are a limited number of people that even do herding. And fucking hell, even canned reindeer is expensive here. Luv ur vids.

The traditional way is to first chase your reindeer herd on to the road so that some of them get hit by a car, claim insurance and then carry the carcass into forest and claim beast damage. In practice wolves venturing into reindeer herding area(at least in the north) have a habit of disappearing mysteriously as soon as they are spotted.

All predators were counted in the Saariselkä region. There were none, but hundreds of thousands received predatory compensation. The Finnish wolverine is the most amazing animal in the world. @seriousspikesam77709 ай бұрын
The rarity and the "exclusivity" of it. Many people cannot claim to have tasted bear meat in their lives. Even fewer can say they have actually hunted one. I think if you're hunting or if you own herds of animals, you have accept that wild animals are going to pray on them unless you protect them. Wild animals have every right to do what is natural to them. An animal being hunted has every right to attack a hunting dog, so if you have a hunting dog and it dies, you're responsible. You put your dog in danger. If you leave your dog outside, especially tied to a lead, and it gets eaten overnight, then you're responsible for making your dog an easy target. If you let your cat go out and it's snatched by an owl, you the owner are responsible. If you have sheep and they are fenced alone on some random field without any protection, you the owner are responsible if they are attacked by wild animals. You've practically handed them over on a silver platter. It's a bit tricker with reindeer, since they are not fully domesticated, but again, you choose to let them roam freely. It's natural that in nature animals eat other animals. If you want the reindeer are safe, then don't let them roam and provide protection. I know that it costs money to provide protection for domesticated animals, but it is what it is. Wild animals are not evil for doing what is natural to them. They are not evil for picking a target humans made into an easy target. Also, the people who hate large carnivoers are always exaggerating the numbers. Compared to many other countries, we have relatively small number of large carnivores in Finland because they are constanly hunted.
@GoldBean27529 ай бұрын
The reindeer compensation thing is stupid, it's the cost of not having your herd in a feedlot. You shouldn't get compensated for business expenses. At most the compensation should be 50% the price of the reindeer.
