The most Mökkiest of Mökkis Ive ever visited is a friends familly cottage, you get to the mökki by either by leisurly rowing the lake (with everyones belongings, water and beers ofc) or surviving the "path" that requires jumping from huge rock to rock and then pushing yourself through the woods hoping you dont break a leg or get bitten by an adder. Just to get there and get out of there (or doing a beerrun to the closest store at like 20km away) is a journey and you will feel amazing! so refreshing! Theres outhouse, a tiny old dock for the rowboat, good ol fire heated sauna, one spot outside for dishes that has a small water pump from the lake, electricity is someones uncles cousins semi hazardous diy project done in the 90s, you can barely get an internet connection with mobile data. The kitchen doesnt have an oven, all food is cooked outside in the firepit. Its perfect.

Our "mökki" was an old farmsteaad from the 1940's. It wasnt near shoreline. Didnt have running water, entertainment for the longest time came from a black and white TV powered by a car battery and outdoor activities... And yet every year around midsummer our whole immediate family would go there and we all had a blast. Later on the place did have a small solar panel unit set up so we could have colour tv hahah.

I'm from Finnmark in Norway and there's also a lot of cabins here. In my opinion if your cabin has electricity, internet, plumbing and is accessible by car then it's not a cabin, just another house. And yeah splitting logs, fishing, foraging and in the winter shoveling snow are some of our favourite activities.

Here in Canada, my parent's cabin does have electricity and running water, from a pump connected to 200L barrels, but heat is from a wood stove in the middle and the toilet is the outhouse. The lake is a short hike away. In the winter that running water isn't used, since we'd have to empty the barrels and flush the water lines when we left. We got water from 20L buckets we brought in and collected waste water in another bucket below the sink. Good times!

As someone whose parents refused to have any other kind of vacation than a finnish loma mökki for pretty much all my childhood, I can confirm most of this. But to be honest I never minded the work. Our favorite Mökki belonged to my uncle, who is a farmer and is located 5 km away from his house, but still on his lands. One year (I was 18) I asked him for work and he handed me a chainsaw, and told me to cut all pieces of wood I could find on the property, and throw them into a barn. I worked for over 10 hours until I couldn't find anymore wood. The barn was 50% full afterwards. My Mummo wasn't happy. She wanted me to do more vacation stuff. So naturally next day I drank a 24 pack of Karhu while going into sauna and swimming.

Through out my childhood our mökki was a rustic experience: no running water, no electricity of anykind, very basic huussi at the edge of the small kuusikko and the food was stored in a barrel dig to the ground. The mökki itself is supposed to be just a saunamökki, so the sleeping arrangements in the attic space are definitely against the code. Now my dad has somewhat improved some aspects; he installed some solar panels for a bit of electricity and there's a small gasfridge for easily spoiling foods. He also got a waterpump, so you don't have to drag water from the lake by hand. My parents are also building a guest cabin for some proper sleeping accomodations. But yeah... anytime an invitation to the mökki is tossed around, everyone knows it's for work mainly. I don't mind, but it's a bit funny.

I like a sound middle ground. A simple looking mökki with running water, efficient heating, electricity, a large bathroom, reliable internet. The porch with an unimpeded sea/lakeview and not having a neighbour in at least a 200m radius is also very welcome. On the other hand, if my wealthy Finnish husband were to gift me with a mökki-in-name-only mansion with swimming pool and other amenities I wouldn't let it go to waste and refuse it.

What is this heresy you're spewing? I get electricity and running water for optimal sauna experience but why the bathroom? At that point might as well live in there. "A large bathroom" even my house doesn't have a "large" bathroom! Why would a mökki need one? For a shower? No. You go to sauna. For laundry? Well I guess that's a fair point but let's be honest, you either go to the mökki for the weekend or a maximum of a week. There's no reason for you too your Landry there just pack extra things. And what kind of a mökki has efficient heating? It's a wood stove and nothing else. (of course if it's in winter use the maybe a couple radiators)

How do you suffer in Joroinen?How did you end up there? Did the Langoliers force your place down there or what? It´s like a place in Stephen King -novel, you´ll see the signs about Joroinen about 2km before you´re supposed to reach it, and then suddenly it´s behind you. But if someone accidentally turn there, and finds a way in, they´ll never be heard of again. I know this, as I´ve driven past Joroinen, hundreds of times, but I´ve never seen the place anywhere... And I also lost one friend there, once I dropped him to a bus stop there, and God´s honest truth, never seen him before. So, if you see Jamppa there, say hi from me, and ask if he needs help to escape from there. (Probably in his view, only one hour has passed, whereas here it´s been 16 years.)

We have one mökki in Nilsiä. It has electricity and running water, but we still use the outhouse and carry sauna water from the lake. A little farming/gathering/fishing is always welcome as well. Our other mökki in the outbacks of Kuusamo has enough solar power to watch the evening news and enough signal to play the radio, but you need to climb on top of a hill to make a phone call. Other than that it's powered by wood or a gas stove. There are many reindeer in the area and they are often seen in a sand pit (sometimes near our porch too.) Supposedly there was also a bear who killed a couple of them, but hopefully it was either driven off or killed off by the mökki hunters.

Ah yes, the great amenities debate. While our family mökki used to be the hardcore experience, lacking even running water (we used a well), I have to say it's nice to have some minimal comforts. These days there's running water, solar electricity for a coffeemaker, a fridge, an indoor toilet and lighting. I draw the line at having a television or other electronics - you're there to waste your life suffering the depredations of the work camp life, enjoy / hate nature, play cards and learn to hate the others you're there with, and get shitfaced, not to waste your life doomscrolling social media or youtube. The toilet in particular is great for folks who don't happen to have a dick. While for some the forest is a natural toilet when you have to take a piss, when you do the traditional mökki kaljan juonti activities that make you need to take a leak every 30 minutes the huussi is a bit of a walk away and naturally infested with the itikkas.
@zoolkhan
@zoolkhan Жыл бұрын
if you built the amenities yourself, i think its fair to enjoy it. The mökki my grandfather carved out near a lake in pusula had a spring in the forest ...gravity would bring that water into the kitchen. at some point a waterump in the sauna would get wasching water from the lake .... the fridge was a hole in the ground... then powerlines and even telephone lines came there - and it turned from a weekend place to a entire summer place for my retired grandparents. Some of my best childhood memories come from there, until my "step-grandma" selling the place to random people after vaaris death... not even asking the people who sweat blood and tears to improve it (my dad and myself i.e.) - whether they want to bid on it too. there goes the mökki. Now i live in a "serial killers home" (old farmhouse in the middle of a forest) which is almost as good as a mökki, but has no lake. I am sure at some point i will just serialkill. I am training it since 30 years on my PC, i am an expert. (according to christian media)

Mökki with electricity, plumbing, toilets, internet etc. is the same thing as "Glamping", ie. camping with extended necessities. Most of them were bought when they were ridiculously cheap or built by the family and passed on etc.

I may be biased, but theres a fine line between "Mökki" and "Second house". Running water and electricity is fine, but once you start getting into amenities like water closets and overall bringing your "home" with you (Like excessive electronics and entertainment) then it turns from a mökki into a house. The whole point of Mökki is to dial down the hecticness of modern life to live just a bit simpler and closer to nature. You don't need to remove all amenities, all power and respect to those that want to, but having a second house does not qualify as a mökki experience. Might as well move to the countryside full time, then. If you would summarize a finnish mökki experience, it's essentially a month-long larp to live a bit the same way as your ancestors have done for thousands of years, away from urbanism. In exchange for the constant labor you have to do, you can also fulfill whatever creative minecraft fantasies you can think of as long as they are done in accordance with the obscenely byzantine finnish bureaucracy regarding safety and building standards.

Easy, Sandels is number one when speaking about big breweries. Olvi is another good one. Karhu is too tart to my taste. Easily drinkable is main priorities of mökkiolut.

@@riippumatonlinja for me Sandels is number two. Karhu had great Juuso olut in 2022 with special can. Also their sauna olut was great

We would like to eat fish. ..so.. we have to dig some baits and then go fishing. Must not fail.

Worms are enough to bait some perch, roach or whitefish. One can bring their tackle box and try luring some pike, salmon or zander. If everything else fails (or your fishing lines get tangled in tree branches/other fishermen), throw in a fish cage and hope it catches something.

Mökki is a place where you spend a week or two and a few weekends hating and making sure that the mökki neighbours (who are also there for a week or two and a few weekends) mind their own fucking business. The neighbours will do the same.
