Oh my! What an inspiring video - very nicely done! I'm from Denmark, and our winter is too cold for the turtles to be in the pond (they live in a kids pool, just like yours do, and it will freeze) this winter I don't want them inside the house, instead I will try to make them hibernate. - but when it's spring, I'm setting this up, and it's gonna be freaking awesome. Thank you once again.

dude i just love this setup, you went so far into detail and made it look easy. im gonna try this for my turtles!
@jase12311110 жыл бұрын
You should still feed them... surviving only on duckweed will not be enough in the long run. Everything else is great. You won't every get baby turtles in that set up as they have no place to buys their eggs...so you can keep them all together. I love you idea of using the plant beds as filter.

i really like ur setup but i think u should give them another kind of protein. A good idea is maybe to get some minnows or guppies in there for them.
@CoreyPig7 жыл бұрын
and you can just let them be and harvest some to sell during fishing season. minnows and guppies.

since water hycinth is commonly grow floating on water surface, I love ur idea to make them grow in more solid substrate like gravel, and it seems work perfect, I will try it, but I will take out the duck weed and let only water hycinth control the water, duck weed make the whole set up look very messy

I like the setup and all, but maybe you could give the Turtles some more room and build them a little private area to lay their eggs during the season.

just realized this video is old but thought itd be worth a shot to still ask-- what pump did you use that could handle pumping the solid wate up to the grow bed? and was it taking in from the bottom of the pond where it all seems to pile up or just purely from whatever was floating in the water freely. I want to do exactly this, but everything I find only talks about either protecting the intake from solids with media box so it doesnt get clogged but that defeats the purpose. In my turtle tank, all the poop sinks to the bottom and I want to somehow pump that up to a grow bed like yours and get it out of the tank completely while letting the floating plants in the water handle the water quality not sure how to accomplish the the pumping of the sold waste without clogging though

It is difficult to avoid algae. Duckweed can help because it shades the water

nice setup! what materiel do you use to make the screen/ fence? also do you get a lot of mosquito growing out of the pond/ grow bed?
@geoffk216 жыл бұрын
I just used plastic fencing from the gardening section at Home Depot. As long as the water level is below the rocks there is no issue with mosquitos

I know this video is pretty old now, but I am curious how well your grow media does with all the turtle waste? Do you use worms in your media? I've noticed in most aquaponic setups people use swirl filters to help remove the solids. I too have turtles and am working on a basic aquaponics setup so I'm curious about how your setup is currently holding up if its still around.
@geoffk216 жыл бұрын
The plants did a great job of cleaning the water. I didn’t have a problem with waste. Unfortunately a raccoon got into the pond and killed all my turtles :(

Hey Geoff did you use any kind of rocks or do they have to be specific ones? Thanks
@nathanaelmcmahan8722 жыл бұрын
Wow. Nobody answered your question for 8 years. If you see this and haven't figured it out, clay pellets are the best, especially if you use worms to clean up root structures. Almost any rock will work. You almost can't go wrong. Smooth works better than sharp.

@mattyb34959 жыл бұрын
Quite a good pond but put the females all in that pond not separated so take the netting out add more rocks add fish ie: guppies separate the male if you don't want babies and plz change the water about every 6 months add a lamp it will help and add a heater.
@geoffk216 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the tips Matty!
@soilnatureorganics79426 жыл бұрын
MattyB349, The plants clean the water. So the water doesn't need to be changed just topped off when need. If anything he should add a swirl filter that can be flushed out at the bottom with a valve. Other then that the water quality should be great for those turtles. The grow bed is a good size for the setup. Just check ammonia levels and if it gets high all you would need to do is add another grow bed. Grow veggies for turtle food. Adding minnows or feeder guppies, those are cheap and breed eassy if raised them. Great set! Shalum,

I do not typically eat the food. But I don’t believe that should be an issue. The water never touches the food. The plants just drink the water and remove the waste
