I think the roofing liner isn't safe for aquatic life due to some ingredients in it... Probably nothing to worry about in your case, but if you were ever thinking of putting in more fish, it is definietly something to take in consideration. Anyway, your turtles look very happy and I enjoyed your video. Thank you for the tips!

Great video. :) I have a tip: Don't make drastic changes to the pond. I had my turtle escape twice because of that. I used to provide basking island. But got rid of that, and my turtles left the pond. But since I don't have many turtles, been turtleless since. But, not to long ago, I made some renovation to my pond. My new turtle escape ten times, until I put back the goldfish, he stayed put since. LOL

I'm going to be getting a snapping turtle and I'm in PA so the hibernation part is something I'm curious about. Do they just need to be below the ice level or do i need to build something for them to go in to hibernate?

You posted this 10 months ago, but if you still are curious, in pretty sure they need a substrate at the bottom to dig up in. I let mine get filled with about about 6 inches near the end of the year for them to dig up in and stay warm!

Very nice pond, thanks for info. . . . we have a red eared that was bought in chinatown as a baby almost 20 years ago, and the poor guy lives in a kiddie pool with rocks to climb on. Gonna make one similar to yours, hopefully a happier life. Is the pump in the 5 gallon bucket sucking water in?..Or pump in pond?
@Synchrimedia4 ай бұрын
nice job on the pond. we have a 7" red-earred slider in a 55 gallon tank and he seems to want out all the time, so I'm considering a backyard pond. how often do you have to clean it? do you have to drain and refill it very frequently? do you use aquarium heaters or do you just leave them to the weather?

Barley balls from a store that sell pond supplies will clarify the water. Also some underwater plants will help too but I know turtles will get into them and destroy them prob make a cage to protect the plants and put them in it. Also min depth for winter is 3 ft

Robert Camarena I'm sorry I didn't get back with you on your question I didn't receive a notification that you commented. Turtle turtles are your there pretty much 100% of the time even during storms and cold weather. And no I live far from a perfect weather state. We get hot wether and subzero weather. If it gets so cold to the point where the water is almost frozen solid then I bring them in.

I read that terrapin need something to bury into so they can hibernate in the winter. Hope you don't mind me asking. Nice pond you have there by the way.

@ShelledReptiles7 жыл бұрын
I do not live in a climate that is warm all the time. It snows, freezes, and hails during the winter but because of RES being able to hibernate they are happy to live out there. as far as your turtles, I do not know the usual North Carolina mountain temp but RES can hibernate for months at a time they may be able to stay out there year round. what I would do is have them out side for the warmer months and keep them inside for the colder months. Thanks!

the problem with turtles and a nice pond with fishes is that your turtles are going to destroy your pond and eat your fishes. My advise is make 2 ponds . One for your plants and fishes and another one for your turtles. I just found your video when you introduced your 11 turtles in that really nice pond you had. i wanted to see your pond after some time and found this video. its sad how it looks now. Make 2 ponds. good job

What do you do when it gets cold outside?
@smoketheevilpipe7 жыл бұрын
Consistently cold would be fine for most aquatic turtles. I have 2 red ear sliders in a tank in my garage. It gets into the 40s out there in the winter, and they survive without any heaters. They go into Brumation (not hibernation). The problem is if it doesnt get cold enough, or it goes from hot to cold too rapidly, or if its too warm to brumate, and too cold to eat. The pond could actually freeze, but as long as it doesnt freeze solid and there still is a way to get oxygen into the water ( poke a hole in the ice) the turtles will be fine. That being said though, turtles do live longer without ever having to go through brumation, because it is very very stressful on their body.
@ShelledReptiles7 жыл бұрын
Most of what you said is true, however, brumation is what animals like Sulcata Tortoises, Bearded Dragons, and warmer whether tropical reptiles do because where they are native it does not get very cold and the cold does not last longer than a month or two. turtles are unique when it comes to hibernation because they can absorb oxygen thru there cloaca, mouth, and skin making it ok for the entire top of the pond to cover in ice. I do agree that hibernation is stressful on there body but it is proven they actually do get a stronger immune system and live a healthier life because there body are doing exactly what is would be doing in nature. I hope this did not come across harsh or mean. Thanks so much for your comment!
