"Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" is a darker, reimagined series that debuted in 2018 and is based on the Archie Comics character Sabrina Spellman. But what happens when the spell backfires, and what should have been a dark and satanic show is infected by Gen Z dialogue and musical numbers?

This show just felt like it was trying too hard to be edgy and "adult". What really hurt the show for me was that Sabrina just wasn't likable. The show was consistently people telling Sabrina not to do the thing, Sabrina doing the thing, and Sabrina pulling a surprised Pikachu face when it inevitably blew up in her face. It also was severely lacking in a smart aleck talking cat.

And the comic it's based on had sassy cat...who was very vile and an actually more terrifying reason to be cursed cat when Archie did it's Nu52 style update. Salem wasn't just "generic dictator supervillain" he was going to cause "R. Maggedon"

This is what happens with a lot of shows by Roberto Aguirre. He has a good first season, a fine second season and then just ruins it all. Like not everything needs to have a musical also he always puts the cast members who date in real life together in the show for no reason

@@finalgirl13 It doesn't really matter if it's badly written tho. And again, it's not that it can't have a musical, I mean, look at Buffy. But it doesn't mean it NEEDS on. C'mon, Grey's Anatomy and Legacies. xD Not every show is as good as The Magicians to pull this kind of thing off.

I wish Ambrose and Salem were the same person. Salem would try talking to Sabrina but she couldn't understand him until he came out in a human form. But his human form was not only a teenager instead of a powerful wizard but his magic was held back. It would have been a good way to have both be in the show and not have two "important but not" characters.

I agree with just about everything, but I do want to point out that Sabrina being selfish, narcissistic, and always willing to cheat with magic is a pretty consistent character trait across all adaptations. If you watch the 90s sitcom she's still doing it, though the stakes are much lower like 'how will I win the talent show without magic?!' Honestly it would be interesting if a future adaptation delved into that and had more characters call her out for it.
@lachancla3723
@lachancla3723 3 ай бұрын
I think it’s more of the fact that Netflix Sabrina gets a pass in some way for her irrational actions. The show doesn’t really force her to learn from her mistakes. The 90’s, I mean she learned at the end of the episode (an un-learn it each time in some way to keep the procedural aspect in tact) not to mess around with magic and the show forced her to undo her mess .

Roberto Aguirre is trying too hard to be Temu Ryan Murphy and, just like his senpai, prioritizes spectacle over substance every single time, in every project. Whoever foots the bill for something he made, they NEED to assign someone to overrule some of his creative choices, like whoever told George Lucas "no, don't make Han Solo a lizard man" and also "Lightsabers should be unique, and only a few characters have them instead of everyone." There's just so much they could've done. Kiernan Shipke is PERFECT casting as Sabrina, so I can't complain that she's allergic to cats, which is why Salem doesn't appear often. I can complain about Hollywood' over-reliance on CGI over VFX (and guess which one is unionized) because we could've gotten a puppet Salem just like the 90s show. But I also love Chance Perdromo as Ambrose, like he portrays the character as very idealistic and melancholy and sweet and brotherly, that he's his own unique new character in the Sabrina mythos and it'd be a waste not to utilize him. The solution? Puppet-cat Salem, voiced by Chance Perdromo, and the twist could be that due to his participation in nearly exposing the world of witches to "the forces of Light" Ambrose was sentenced to "a very spirited disembodiment" and casted out of his own body, which would then be enclosed in a crystal coffin a la Snow White (and suspended in magical stasis). If he's been floating around as this terrifying dark spirit for decades, that would explain why his personality is still that of a young teenager/college student, and after Sabrina binds him as a familiar, he'd go by his bound name of Salem (like Solomon and his key) and there could be a funny ongoing bit of Salem knowing too much about Zelda and Hilda until it's unveiled that he's Ambrose, their dear nephew! Lilith could've been characterized as a calculated social climber who's running a game for Lucifer, but not working for him. Like her leading Sabrina to him is a quid-pro-quo, and there could've been a larger analogy there for women in power trying to carve out a seat at the table, even if it means throwing other (younger) women under the bus, but then as they actually bond, Lilith would become more attached to Sabrina and see herself in her, and sabotage Lucifer's plans to spare Sabrina and then, and then, and then.... Well. What a waste. I don't even have the energy to even think about fanfiction. Whatever. Rot in heaven, Roberto, or whatever tf the witches say 😂 Happy Halloweeeeen 🎃🦇

I hated that they made their devil religion the total inverse of Christianity... Except the misogyny, which i think they actually INCREASED for reasons. If they were smart theyd have reversed the gender roles and made the story feminist THAT way (The Barbie Movie basically did this) instead of butchering something the writers had no knowledge of whatsoever. Id argue it cant be a "woke" show if it doesnt even understand the politics its attempting to pander to, its just embarrassing ☠️☠️☠️

i wish they would have just agreed to one general idea of an aesthetic. they had this 80s-horror campy vibe, this dark and gritty vibe, this disney channel can't-get-too-dark and it just... you never knew if something was going to matter or not. i loved the premise, it just... failed for me within the first season. i couldn't get past how they refused to let sabrina's character grow even a miniscule amount. "sabrina, don't do this! you don't understand everything yet!" and sabrina immediately does it, then runs back to said person for help, admits she was wrong but only kinda. AND even worse, i love stories of women's empowerment, but it just wouldnt... get over itself? like there were moments were it fell naturally to be a woman's story, i loved the idea of the villain using feminism in the wrong way to empower a young woman to get their way with them... but it just... didn't do anything? the villain was right? and sabrina was right too- so wtf was the point? i wanted to love it SO bad. but i felt so disappointed and honestly kinda betrayed.

the wicca society COULD have been cool if it was a full arc. i liked the idea, again, of lillith kind of using feminism as a veil to hide her intentions. allowing the main cast to be manipulated, then PROVING that her "brand" of feminism is wrong, and true empowerment for women comes from community, or comes from respect and compassion for each other or something cheesy and "friendship was the key all along" idk. but it drives me crazy.

This is an awesome video! You're touching on a lot of the things I felt while watching the series. Take this with a grain of salt but from what I remember, Theo's actor (Lachlan Watson) had to push against the original plan for Theo, which was for him to come out and then die in like episode 3. And Watson was like, "you... can't do that. Don't do that." He ended up being my favorite character since season 1 but they really just... don't have him that involved in the plot at all... like there isn't really a time where a decision he makes or a skill he specifically has actually helps the plot, unless you count just dating Robin. And even those plotlines (like their break up) get resolved fast or you don't actually see the effects that has on either character. The show ends up feeling so cut off from the human world and any mortal plot. I had really wanted this show to treat the witch world and the mortal world with equal respect and the plot to be Sabrina's internal reconciliation of the two parts of herself, but instead its mostly just forgetting any plotline in the mortal world and the witch world being Bad™️. Like I would have loved creepy world building where we actually respect and like the weird traditions and culture of the witch world, and seeing Sabrina being seen as weird bc the cultural norms in the two worlds she exists in clash. I had hoped that when they were about to fuse the two Sabrinas, it was going to be this symbolic moment of her figuring out her identity and feeling whole rather than split between two worlds. So anyways that didn't happen lol

I am still watching, so I don't know if it's brought up or you saw it, but part of why Salem was underutilised in this show is because Kiernan Shipka is actually allergic to cats. I assume they kept him because he's such an iconic part of the Sabrina canons but yeah, it kind of ended up feeling pointless because they couldn't have a lot of scenes with the two. In other news, a friend and I were lucky enough to see the actors for Zelda, Hilda and Lilith at Wales Comic Con. Michelle Gomez is *hilarious* on panel. So does her being only half witch mean that she is much less powerful than full witches? What did the baptism do for her EXACTLY? she would age slower now but what about her powers? Does she now has her full powers like full witches? And if that´s what the baptism meant for her then what does the baptism do for actual full witches?

I feel like Sabrina is an accidental multi-faceted character. On the one hand, she's kind, caring, loyal, and outspoken, and on the other hand selfish, prideful, and ruthless. One could argue that the latter traits she inherited from Lucifer and the reason people seem to like her so much can't stay mad at her may be due to some celestial charm she inherited from him too. It's so strange that the writers wouldn't let Sabrina be as complex as she could be. It's all right there, if the writing was any good with its characterization, it would've been gold. Also the worldbuilding? It was all over the place. Wish they would've put some effort into it and had some consistency!

My thoughts on the Chilling Adventurs of Sabrina seasons are as followed: Season One: amazing Season Two: good until the reveal, I hated it Season Three: bad in a bad way Season Four: bad in a good way. Nothing makes sense and I love it. And I feel like Roberto Aguirre does fairly well with the structure of episodic with an overarching goal for exactly one season of television. Like season one’s goal is to get Sabrina to sign her name in the book but outside of the first three episodes and the last one (not the Christmas special), is all episodic. Going to witch school, dealing with a dream demon, etc. And technically, every other season does that as well, but it’s just not as good, and I think it’s because they focus too much on the witch stuff. Which is weird to say about a witch show, but when I think of the later season episodes I enjoy it’s putting on a bad school play, going to a school dance, a battle of the bands, all with some kind of magic twist. It’s fun. The evil church stuff and hell politics is not fun. Also the best romance was Hilda & Dr. Cerberus. Love them. And it makes sense because Dr. C voices several Barbie love interests including Julian from Barbie Princess and the Pauper and everyone loves Julian from Barbie Princess and the Pauper.

I remember being so in love with the show with it's first season and being absolutely enthralled by the anachrontistic 60s-y world, usage of honorifics, and general creepy atmosphere and aesthetic. The second season wasn't the worst and even though it was technically filmed and written as part of Season 1 it still felt like a dip. The show just went totally off the rails. Also! While I loved the cool blur effect in this show did anyone else notice how it started to appear in EVERYTHING immediately after?

Yeah... When she mentioned the sitcom episode without acknowledging the 90's show and mistaking Zelda and Hilda for a married couple, I realized she hadn't watched it 😅😅

The question that haunts me still is; where did Ambrose come from? He calls Sabrina "cousin" and he is accepted as a part of the Spellman family. But neither Hilda not Zelda are his mum and Sabrina's dad (neither version) clearly isn't his dad either. Sabrinas mum was mortal and Ambrose is magical, so probably no relation there. If he was some kind of non-aging uncle of Sabrina, then the whole concept of the three Spellman siblings falls apart. So... huh?

we need a hilda magical crime drama comedy that is about hilda moving away and being the only witch in the town. it has to be campy, horrific and brutal.

i hate how common it is for the devil to betray witches who work for him in media ; Salem did it, Penny Dreadful did it, and CAOS did it - i'd like just one series or movie in which he isn't a bad boss villain ~ Lucifer gives me a fun devil but he doesn't have witches working for him *

And the notion that girls committing crimes is feminist, (and also certain other flaws in female characters), it's also something that Roberto did on Riverdale of course, but it also had an interesting parallel with Noa in season 2 of his PLL version.

Thanks for the like and if his version of PLL revealed anything it simply this there's actually a big difference between what he does and what Marlene King used to do.

I would argue that the shift in how Zelda treats Hilda ( 21:24 ), and vice versa while Hilda decides she needs to do things like get her little job outside their mortuary, is caused in large part by incidents like what happened with Batty-Bat. The fact that I've seen this show no less than seven times and still forgot which one of them had which dream, though... The character writing isn't terribly consistent, especially where motivations are concerned (and that's likely WHY), but I'll admit, Hilda was and continues to be one of my favorite characters from the entirety of CAOS's run.

1st mistake was placing it in the RiverDale universe you can tell they had crossovers set up in place so they probably decided it would work better for them to make CAOS in the style of riverdale so that when crossover happens it wouldn’t be too jarring of a aesthetic difference. You can really see it once they cancelled Sabrina and brought her character into the final seasons of riverdale that it was really their end goal with the whole CAOS show, at the time of Riverdales creation it was grounded in reality and so they couldn’t just add Sabrina in until they had introduced the supernatural elements into riverdales story.

CAOS was doomed to fail from the start, they had all the potential for a great show with a good story and characters but they built their house on the foundation that is Riverdale.

I feel like this show rides completely on the personalities of the actors. The story doesn't make sense, the dialogue is cringe, and it is a total mess, but damn if the actors aren't just so dang likeable that it makes you wanna watch more.

I was really looking forward to this show when it was announced and I did enjoy season 1 and I think season 2 was ok it’s been a while since I’ve watched but it just wasn’t as good as I thought it could be. The last 2 parts I just watched but I wasn’t super excited for them. I love this time of year and I loved Sabrina the teenage witch so having a darker version I was really looking forward too I remember hating the last episode.

Yeah, I dropped the show when I saw it going the Riverdale route. Roberto should not have control of a show. Both shows actually had a good start and potential and then they just went completely off the rails. It's suddenly like a program for toddlers but it also has teen orgies and cannibalism, clearly fake representation when they had more than enough characters and storylines to actually integrate those themes in a natural way. The second a show like this randomly turns into a musical, I'm out. If anyone is in charge of a show and they suggest a musical episode, fire them right there because they have lost the plot.

Grear review & Analysis. I'm glad you mentioned the feminist themes of the show because I also felt that those were the weakest. There's a fine line between being empowered and arrogant, and the writers didn't understand that. Subsequently, Sabrina's character suffered because of it. I also agree that too much time was invested in the human characters. It completely muddled the overall story and it didn't add much value. Lastly, great point on the incoherent mythology.

i gotta say i really don't remember much from this show, and i feel like that's saying a lot about it because i used to loove it as it came out. tbf i was 14? so i was there to just enjoy the vibes. but it started getting so bad that when the last season came out i waited like two months until i actually sat down to watch it, as opposed to watching the previous seasons on the day of release, and i dnf-ed it after the first 10 minutes of the first episode because i hated it

I have a few problems with the show one they made sabrina too weak she’s supposed to be the greatest witch of her generation yet she never has a god like moment again.2 If they followed the comics the story would been much better and makes more sense
