This is how Chinese kids react when they see black people.
Living outside your home country isn't quite easy, but living in China is a little different. And especially that my skin color is different, I get a lot of reaction from Chinese on a daily basis.

@catsNcode

As an Asian person, I love hearing these types of experiences and how your son picked up Mandarin so quickly! (just a heads up though, as some people might perceive it negatively.. Oriental usually can be used to refer to objects like rugs, etc...but it is better to refer to people as Asian. This is because of a depiction style called Orientalism -- when the West visited Asia and then returned to draw them in exotic/negative/primitive manners---comparatively to minstrel show)

Hatred and prejudice stems from ignorance of others cultures and languages and the resistance to learn of and understand one another. If people around the world practiced this from birth, there would be a lot less hatred and fear of each other. It may not be a utopian world, but it would definitely be a much greater improvement on the one we all share today.

I love your videos and the reactions of people. ❤ Foreigner s often say that where I live we are rude because we “stare” at other people. I’m from Germany btw. But this has nothing to do with skin color or whatever…we just stare 😅 sometimes when I’m thinking about something I don’t even notice I’m looking at somebody’s direction. I’m just lost in my own thoughts. And mostly when I really look at other people it’s just because I’m curious. It might be because they dress nicely or have a great style, different hair color or whatever. Keep up your good work and lots of love from Germany 🎉

Felthom, it would be more annoying to me to have everyone turn around and stare at me as they do, but you handle it with much grace. I visit Ghana every year and not once have I had that type of experience there. I think it is clearly a reflection of the fact that Chinese people do not have the opportunity to experience many visitors from other parts of the world. Western culture teaches that is is not polite to stare but if that is not a part of the culture there you cannot make a judgment about the behavior. I'm sure you have made many friends there as you have a very warm and inviting personality. Wishing you all the best.

I think it’s quite normal. I’m Chinese who is living in Vancouver, Canada where we have a lot of immigrants, world class international city. Everytime Im out, I can feel people(except Asian ofc) constantly look at me or even stare at me, especially at some bar or places that usually local visit . It’s unpleasant and make me uncomfortable, what I can observed from this video is their curiosity and people usually tend to look at someone filming on the road.

i know exactly what this feels like walking the streets in a foreign land where the people were not accustom to seeing black people or in some cases had never seen a black person/man in the flesh. Back in 1977 while on deployment with patrol squadron nine in Okinawa Japan I spent a weekend up in the countryside and people were coming up to me touching me and rubbing my skin to see if i was real or to see if the color of my skin would rub off, the people were not rude or disrespectful they were just curious and of course at the time I was lean, solid, tall and damn good looking to boot. It was a very pleasant experience for me as well to be a visitor in another country and be treated kindly, I will always cherish these memories.

Just goes to show that there are wonderful people all over the world. So many are curious to meet and experience new people and culture. I believe there are more good and curious people than there are not. You are awesome. This video reinforces my belief. Enjoy your studies there and have a great time!

You’ve only learned Chinese for 5 years? And managed to get the tones right (90% of the time). I’m impressed! Many foreigners still get most of their times wrong after many years learning it and living in china).
