Once again Nintendo has released a new Gamecube Controller for fans to pick up on the way to the release of Smash Bros Ultimate on Nintendo Switch. These controllers are a bit different from the 2014 Gamecube controller with a different logo, but how different are they internally from the original controller?

@@CallerID im not trying to boast. Im merely saying people can be interested in the same things but have "expertise" in completely different areas of a hobby. I wouldnt expect a formula one driver to have the know how fix his car or how to tune the motor of the vehicle he drives, just like i wouldnt expect the guy who tunes the engine to be setting laptimes similar to the proper driver in the thing. He has his countless hours in the tech side of things when it comes to video games and considers himself casual when it comes to playing gamecube classics, i dont doubt that hes got far more experience in stuff he likes and has mentioned as playing a bunch comparatively to me who really hasnt played this stuff in literally a decade and change now, plus was in elemenary and middleschool when i did. But when it comes to myself and what i prefer to play, i know what im good in and can consistantly score above average if not higher in, so i wouldnt call myself a casual player in the stuff i prefer. Hey just wanted to point out that there are actually 2 differences between these and the original Gamecube controllers. If you take apart the triggers, you will see metal brackets in the old controllers that are not present in the new ones. Supposedly these help guide the triggers and keep them from getting jammed. Also, the button membranes on the new controllers are a bit stiffer and less mushy than the old ones. This is not from wear, it's actually a slightly different design and can be seen pretty easily. Both of these parts can be swapped out with ones from an old controller with no problem. Anyway, it would be pretty hard to catch these unless you knew about them beforehand. Love your videos!
@timdrake2020

The D-Pad Membrane is taller on the 2014 / 2018 GCN controllers.
@TakumiJoyconBoyz
@TakumiJoyconBoyz 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, there's a few other differences. Figured I'd say it here to keep it all in one place. The newer controller also has taller buttons, which affects the feel of things like multi-shine. (Harder to slide your thumb from X to B.) and the way the sticks line up with the gates is slightly different, making shield drops easier. I think this is due to the cap being slightly thinner and 1-2mm taller. This one doesn't actually change anything, but the pegs that hold the Z-button in place are slightly longer on the new controller. I also believe because of the internal polling consistency that the dashback rate is lower on most new controllers. (It's actually MORE consistent polling, but due to the way Melee is programmed, it can end up with a walk instead of a dashback if you start the input during the wrong part of the frame. Old controllers had a higher chance of a defect that actually made Melee play better at top levels.) Oh and the screws on the old ones are galvanized, but the new ones aren't.
@Devil935
@Devil935 5 жыл бұрын
Takumi than in your personal how would these minor changes affect the newer controllers down the line
@TakumiJoyconBoyz
@TakumiJoyconBoyz 5 жыл бұрын
@@Devil935 Most of them won't affect the durability from what I can tell. They just have a worse feel. I find the best thing to do is migrate the board into an older shell and use the older controller's plastic and rubber parts to improve control feel. The biggest issue to me is the more consistent polling as that's not fixable and if you care about playing Smash Bros Melee at a competitive level it could get in the way, but no other game should have any issues from it The shoulder button wire issue mentioned by Moshibass can actually be fixed on your own by buying some thin metal wire and bending it into the shape you need to stabilize the shoulder buttons. The slot for the wire still exists, The wire is just not in there. Most of the issues are more immediate game-feel issues. I only think they'd affect really competitive games like Melee and F-Zero GX/AX though. They also should have a minimal effect on newer Smash games like Brawl and Smash 4 because they don't have Dash Dancing. Smash Ultimate remains to be seen, but I'd assume the polling issue won't affect it, even though they added back a more restricted version of Dash Dancing. I'm assuming it will have a frame delay solution like UCF and Project M.

The absolute earliest GameCube controllers had a difference in the rubber membrane for the main buttons or some plastic part securing it and the rubber would easily move out of position. It was pretty common to see the in-store demos that went up before the US launch with A buttons that appeared to be stuck down. I rented a Japanese GameCube and then imported a Japanese controller before the US launch so I had even more experience with the defective design before it was revised. I recall IGN mentioning this somewhere in 2001 (mailbag?) and they also mentioned that it had been fixed.

Tbh, that tiny amount of weight is likely from the paint on the silver one. The texture is DEFINITELY due to the paint on the silver one. The original black, purple, or orange controllers would probably weigh and feel like the new one.

I think the fact that the silver one is heavier, is down to the fact that it has metal braces in the trigger mechanism. On the new GameCube controllers Nintendo just straight up didn't add them.

Nintendo has always been fun with their controllers. Even though they've offered more traditional controllers since the Wii era, they still have weirdly shaped ones every generation--Wii remote, GamePad, Joy-Con. It's also worth noting that Nintendo basically invented what we know as a "traditional" controller layout with the SNES.

The drifting happened also with the older controllers, is just that you moved the stick while pluging it in. When you plug the controller it "zero" the axis. If its slightly off, it will drift, just unplug it and plug it again
@Grawbad
@Grawbad 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, this is indeed the case. I remember on N64 back in the day, if you touched the analog stick during boot up of the console it would mark whatever spot you were holding it in at the time as center and it would drift. You would need to restart the console without touching the stick for it to work properly.
@-rami-8528
@-rami-8528 5 жыл бұрын
I heard that the drifting occurs because people hold the joystick in a direction before the system boots up or when they connect it to the port, it adjusts the dead zone to the position you were holding in and makes that the neutral position, so just don’t hold the joystick when putting in the controller or when booting up the system with the controller already put it

Old information before returning your "drifting" controller: When an analog stick gets out of deadzone (normally, if you turned the system on while holding the analog stick in a random direction by mistake), there were ways to reset it back to neutral if you leave analog stick in its neutral place, Hold L, R, and press, then hold A, and the Start button.

I'm pretty sure the only real difference in internals was them removing a little metal piece from the triggers(which I'm sure you would notice if you took the trigger covers off). The mold still has places for them so they can be replaced, but the reason they left them out is because there is very nearly no change in the actual functionality or feel of the controller without it, so they saw it as an unnecessary extra part to manufacture, which it kinda is.

The problem with the GameCube controller is that it hasn't really stood the test of time for most games outside of ones that were already designed for the GameCube. Even if they added the missing left bumper, clickable sticks, select, home, and capture, the ABXY layout makes it a pain to play certain games where you need to, for example, push something like B and Y at the same time. Super Mario World is a nightmare to play with the thing. That's why I like it as a more niche thing that Nintendo and Hori bring back every few years.

I think the button mapping is far less of a problem than people make it out to be, at least from a very general standpoint. Yeah shure, B+Y on GC controller is difficult. The GC controller is my favorite of all time (it just seemed to fit my hand like a glove and was ultra-comfortable, I love the long-travel analogue triggers and the giant A button), but nowdays people want two big analogue sticks, the C-stick on the GC is just a little too tiny and uncomfortable, and the ideosyncratic button layout might not play so well with games released on multiple systems. Also I think these days people want wireless operation and rechargeable batteries, plus the other various features the Switch controllers include, and I wonder how easy it would be to fit all that stuff in the GC controller's smaller form-factor --- but now that I think about it, they fit all that into the tiny joycons, so maybe it wouldn't be a big problem? Still, perhaps they could make a new controller with the GC controller form-factor (sooo comfortable) and the extra features of the Pro Controller and a bigger C-stick...?

So glad to see Gamecube controllers still alive in 2018. They're a bit too out of date for Switch games but perfect for...Well GameCube games. I just wish they sold them in the GameCube controller color brand besides black. You know, indigo, platinum, spice and maybe even that illusive emerald one. Not a big deal though, I can just use the shells from the old ones I have that may be breaking or broken.

So let me explain here, MITSUMI and a few other manufacturers made the gamecube controllers, your platinum one was made not by MITSUMI as they clearly state their logo on the pcbs, I prefer the MITSUMI ones and the easiest way to tell is that most of them were made on launch and the screws that were used turned to a somewhat bronze color.

tldr: Same as GC controllers as wii u version, and they're both in turn the same as the original GC controllers but missing the trigger braces that just make the triggers a bit more stable. Things melee pros most look for in a GC controller all gace to do with the jostick: 1) Amount of snapback from the joystick: when coming back to center position after being hit in one direction, does it register values in the opposite direction? 2) Rotational displacement from the joystick/ gate precision: when you hold the joystick firmly at a 45 degree angle against the gate, do the x and y values registered actually reflect that? 3) General feel of the joystick, even though this one really comes down to preference.

I think the drift might be the neutral position being off. With the n64 and gamecube the analogue stick neutral position is set to whatever position the stick is in when it recieves power, if someone fiddles with the sticks on startup or rests their thumbs on them in a way that pushes them off at startup then they will drift. Thankfully you can fix that by unplugging and replugging them in without touching the sticks or for the cube hold start, x and 6 for 3 seconds while not touching the sticks to reset the neutral position.

I can confirm that Gamecube controllers in general can have drifting issues. My friend has a platinum controller that drifts almost every time it's plugged in. Something interesting to note is that the value the joystick is pointing to gets saved as an offset when you plug in the controller. If you're accidentally holding the control stick outside of the neutral position when you plug the controller in you *will* get drift and if that's the case you can fix it by unplugging the controller or plugging it back in

Zombie Raichu there’s not necessarily anything more accurate about metric. It’s just easier to convert between units. All accuracy is is how close you measure to what it actually is. The only way it could be more accurate is if it was luckily closer by the number of significant digits on the scale not being enough and making it closer by just the one item. I’m used to the American system so it’s easier for me to gauge how much of something is in my head. It’s the same with others for metric. I think it’s better to try and just have both systems since that’s pretty much how it is.

Oh my stars. Do not tell people to throw GameCube controllers into soapy water. That is the epitome of horrible advice. Water erodes the circuit board and soap leaves a residue. That's a great way to ruin the longevity of your gear. ALWAYS clean electrical connections with isopropyl alcohol of the highest percentage you can come by, using a small, clean nylon paintbrush. Seriously. Holy shit, dude. No. If you're going to present yourself as an expert, do your dang homework. Sheesh.
@MrMarinus18
@MrMarinus18 5 жыл бұрын
More importantly soap speeds up corrosion and also destroys the rubber pads. That is actually by design as the oxidation helps remove filth. The residue it leaves is oxide. It is also a base and that helps get rid of fat that the body produces to keep the skin subtle. With alcohol though it doesn't have the oxidation property it is still a base as well and with the rubber pads of the gamecube controller it's best to be careful. Water itself isn't actually damaging but it is key that you make sure it's dry before sealing it up again. Making something 100% dry is quite difficult and that's why alcohol is preferred as it vaporizes easily.
