I was in prison years ago due to a stupid mistake. Met a guy behind bars, that dude conned millions out of people, similar scheme, got sentenced for 8 years, was in his 5th year. Do you know what he told me? "I know what I did. But you know what? They weren't able to find all the money. One day I will be out, buy a great house, car and still will be rolling in cash. They will have their moral victory, but not much else and I will be the rich one. It was worth it". So yeah, 7 years for this guy is not enough. And believe me, people like him, cheaters, scammers, they never feel any regret for what they did. He will just be counting days to the moment he's back to his luxury and then laugh in everybody's faces.

The issue you address is definitely something people need to be more aware of. I don't live in the US, but in my country, a journalist years ago discovered that criminals that were not allowed to own firearms and the like and saw them confiscated and destroyed, were reimbursed for them upon their release. (So basically, they had stuff they shouldn't have, so they went to prison for it but the government bought the illegal stuff off of them.) After a public outcry over this, the law was changed. Sometimes I wonder if people setting up a justice system have a clear idea of what "justice" even IS.
