@@blablabla9401 Where'd you get that statistic? The most commonly cited one is 10%. Even then, I'm not sure if the census used for that was using gay as an umbrella term or strictly for gay men and lesbians. Edit: Also, using statistics to justify a lack of representation is... not very good. For some examples here: 40% of Americans are nonwhite and, unless a show is specifically about people of color, the cast of most shows is likely to be a bunch of white people and then one poc. 1% of people are asexual, but there's only one ace character in relatively mainstream media. One in fifty-nine people are on the autism spectrum but there is very little autism representation, let alone accurate representation.

Yeah my dad and mom say the same stuff. Then me and my sister say: "Oh my god how we do not like how they just shove straight charachter down our throats". We understand that staright people and gay people exist but we just say that to spite them and tell then how, even tho there are gay characters in shows, there is more straight character in the same shows. Also the thing they say is: "We do not care as long as they keep it in the house" and just... I understand they do not want to see it, but then straight people should keep it in the house as well. It is not eaquality if ones can show public affections and others can't.

Saaaaame. It's so annoying, because straight privilege allows them to see the world nothing like how we do. I recently watched someone review a book by an *LGBT author* who complained that "so many" of the main characters were *gay.* Let that sink in. Characters who numbered like...idk...8 at best? Not only that, she said the woman wrote it for 'brownie points.' WTH. SHE'S GAY. Don't they realize it's JUST as awkward for us to write straight characters as it is for them to write queer ones? Even in our own works, we can't escape this BS. Next time they say that, just point out that for every 1 queer character in a show/book/movie, there's about 200 straight ones. We went over 50 damn years either being ignored or used as negative reinforcement against our own communities in the US alone. I feel zero sympathy for this type of thinking.

or an example of one which I thought was gonna be a film about a chilean teenager dealing with the aftermath of a gay bashing incident....it is at first and its really cool cuz he wears dresses, wears make up and he is not a white kid. he is genuinely dealing with the problems of being GNC in a nation that is quite bigoted......aaaaaand they bash him a 1/4th of the way into the film so that his straight father can have all the gay angst to himself. and then the blurb for the movie lied by making it seem like the father was gonna go out of his way to take revenge on the people who beat him. no instead we get to watch this 50 year old straight guy deal with the realities of medical bills and maybe a tiny bit of interesting cuz no one wnats to prosecute cuz the kid was attacked cuz hes gay. but then its barely mentioned. the film of this name btw is called 'You'll never really be alone'

@@Otra_Chica_de_Internet because its history, that's like saying why are they teaching about black history, white kids cant get anything out of it. Straight kids absolutely can get something out of it, they can learn about the struggles of gay people, and then think about how their bigotry affects gay people today. People think twice about calling black individuals the n word because they understand the struggles theyve gone through and they know what the n word implies. Otra Chica De Internet for me it’s less of being taught about lgbt history specifically (though it’s definitely something that should at least be an option as a course in high school) but more of being told that a historical figure is lgbt. Like, a LOT of people that are considered imperative to the existence of the Renaissance were gay. At my school we learned their nationality, where they studied, and what works they did, but not once was it mentioned that they were gay. Did you know the biggest factor towards why Jesus is depicted the way he is, is because he’s based off the artists gay lover? Because I didn’t, I found that out on my own. I guess it’s also annoying because so many people consider lgbt+ people as a recent thing, when we’ve been around for centuries.

I have had my sister say that about me. It feels so ridiculous, like am I supposed to always wear flannels and get a girlfriend and move in together after two months? I'm aromantic so half of that ain't gonna happen and the other half...I live in the south and it is TOOOO hot for that. My sister knows I like dudes too and she gets so confused when I point out something looks like a dick. More things just look phallic sis, ladies still give me the heebie in my jeebies. The most 'gay' thing I do is give my D&D characters a defined, non-straight sexuality. One is ace panromantic who got together with a female member of the party. Another is pansexual and has called the entire party beautiful (even though only 3/9 are only vaguely attractive). Another is bi and in a poly relationship with a nonbinary person. And that's not even all of them! It's like people don't realize that we act differently. Like nobody even remembers that two of my friends are bi because they doesn't 'act bi'. Like...do you think that being bi is only a female trait and they don't count because their both cis dudes?

Honestly I love Brooklyn 99 so much because they're so great with representing both the struggles captain Holt went through as a gay black detective, but also that he's just a normal dude who happens to be gay. And they do it so well that I forget Holt is gay, even in episodes where Kevin is a central character. I'm just like, "oh look it's Holt's husband" and the word gay doesn't even cross my mind. It's just so normal and everyone accepts it and I love that kind of representation. Sometimes it's great to see the struggles of the community represented, but sometimes it's awesome to see the community being so normalized, because hey, we're just people

This is why I love watching Thai TV shows so much. They have so much representation, it’s crazy. Sometimes, I go into a show that I assume isn’t LGBT at all, and then boom randomly there’s a gay side couple I wasn’t expecting, or a trans character I didn’t know about, etc etc. I haven’t really seen many Thai shows that don’t have at least one LGBT character somewhere in there. I love it

Please consider making a video on Disney channel Andi Mack’s character Cyrus Goodman, the first gay (main) character on Disney channel. He has a coming out arc but also has other things going on, not to mention that he actually says the word “gay” in season 3 (also the final season) and has a full on love story with another boy that started developing in season 2. You don’t have to actually watch the show since there are videos on his storyline and plenty of analysis online, but I do recommend the show bc it also covers other important topics.

I can’t explain why, but I just feel so emotionally invested in Always Sunny. And that episode about Mac finding his pride just… I don’t know. It sticks with me. Whenever I think about that scene. I get this overwhelmingly empathetic feeling. I’m Christian and bi but haven’t had those two parts of my life collide before because I figured out I was bi after my family stopped going to church for personal reasons. (I still want to go back, but sometimes I worry about what would happen. I’ve never once thought that the church would be right if they tried to condemn me in some way though.) I think it just comes down to the fact that when you struggle between two very influential and important parts of your life, it feels like you’ve become a child again, having to decide between two things you really don’t want to lose. And Mac’s dance feels like a sincere portrayal of that split; of being torn and constantly fighting with yourself. It resonates with me and how my emotions always leave me stuck between two options because I could never give one thing up that I love for another. They leave me tethered and confused just like when I was little. Mac and I are definitely very different since he has the whole internalized homophobia thing, but I always feel empathy for the raw expression of how he feels. And I think I always will.

Maybe it's the best way to demonstrate that not all LGBT+ people are stereotypes, given that the opportunity to depict LGBT+ characters is very slim. If a character has two mums, the best way to quickly show that lesbians are not a single stereotype is to have them be very different visually and in personality. The other possibility is that it's 'more funny' but hopefully it's the first one.

"Boys don't cry" accidentally taught me that if you're a trans man you must be straight, and you're gonna be r*ped and murdered by men anyway, so just stay in the closet and be safe. So I ended up in the closet until I was 26.

BlackSheepNara sorry that happened to you. I live in MS and there doesn’t seem to be a gay community at all that I can find. Some places are still very much in the dark ages concerning sexuality and gender.

I can confirm that. The Children's Hour made me believe that even if the woman I loved had reciprocated my feelings, I would be shunned and hated. So, I never took a chance.

Andrew Rose rad, I just thought you had to be a women to be a lesbian, every NB person I know usually just says they “like women,” as to not get misgendered because the term lesbian is gendered to female, so I was just confused

The only time I’ve ever seen a pansexual character was in Big Mouth. And it was a girl of color. I cannot even begin to say how good it felt to see someone that I could truly relate to. Even now it’s a lot of gay and bisexual characters, which I love seeing, but it’s so amazing to see myself there, plain and simple. To not have to change something to relate to it in full. It’s so refreshing, and if anyone knows of any other shows with pansexual characters, could you please let me know!

Ok so I am here to recommend the podcast on spotify called "the two princes" It's an amazing story which btw almost made me have a heart attack from fangirling so much, which follows a prince who has to go on a quest to save his kingdom and on the way he meets another prince who is trying to save his own kingdom, they fall in love along the way and it is just so adorable I cant EVEN- So ya if yall just need a cute gay story to listen to I implore you to listen to this it is highly underrated I CANNOT recommend it enough I swear-

The only thing I hated in Mac's storyline, although "incidentally realistic." was how he treated the transgender woman in season 2.

@@Chlo255Yeah, definitely a flawed portrayal, but I always liked Carmen herself as a character. She herself was pretty awesome, it was the gang’s treatment of her that was horrible.

Rewatching it there were definitely pokes at Carmen but overall I would say that it was so cool to have a confident transwoman in media and having Mac being the ignorant one the audience is rolling their eyes at. Also there was the moment when Mac accidentally hits Carmen with something and a group of men look at it and say “hey he’s beating up a woman let’s get him!” And Mac is transphobic and goes “actually she’s a dude” and the men go “isn’t that a hate crime? Let’s get him!” supporting Carmen and showing what an asshole Mac. Idk definitely problematic nowadays but I still love that they constantly made the gang the butt of the jokes

I was hoping Valencia from crazy ex-girlfriend would be mentioned, I personally loved how they handled her storyline... I appreciate not making it a big deal that she’s (I’m assuming) bisexual, it’s never the main focus with her. They talk about her relationship, sure, but it never really feels like it’s BECAUSE of her sexuality. But then again, Darryl singing Gettin’ bi is pretty epic 😂

Lol same. One of the girls that used to bully me came out after school. Both her and her sister are gay. Another one of my bullies came out as bi and her sister is gay. Also one of the most popular straight boys in school came out after school. He used to make life hell for other people. I'll never forgive any of them.

One time I was writing a fictional short story essay thing for school and my main character was a girl. I ask if I could have a love interest for her and my teacher said it was fine, yet when I was describing her love interest which was another girl, my teacher told me that it was “to inappropriate” for my essay. I then changed the love interest to a boy and he didn’t say anything about it.
