Yeah, I had a hard time naming this one because while it started out - and is - wonderful practical tips of how to get the most out of a retreat, Shinzen Young also delves into how there are "2 Kinds of People" (as per Don Juan in Carlos Castaneda's books), his experience of being at an U Pandita retreat, strategies for making chanting a powerful meditation, and how the Buddha talked of "catching fire." All making the same point - how to catch fire. :)
I recommend to listen to this as more of suggestions for daily life - not just retreat.
This was recorded by Stephanie Nash on Dedember 30, 2013 during the annual year-end residential retreat in Southern California.

I love Shinzen. He has taught me so much, just through KZbin. I always remember him while I'm bopping around, and I pepper the day with micro practices as much as possible 😜

In Shinzen's world, even if he doesn't say it every time, when you are "boppin' around" you are always "eating a burrito" - it's an L.A. thing.

Microhits a great term to use for being able to use awareness throughout one's day.

this really is the key to the whole thing. especially if you can't afford lots of retreat time. I got from stream entry to Third Path doing this in under a year after really getting to grips with 'peppering the day'. Until my day was virtually all seasoning.....

You are most fortunate (and hardworking, of course :). I have never been able to crack the nut of pathological doubt despite enormous effort. But a lot of it has been inefficient.

I've been very restless and haven't been able to concentrate or focus for equinimity. Its only when I smoke weed that I can have a bit of concentration . and I've been trying to just let the need to smoke pass . but I end up just building up the need to smoke cuz I seem to waste a lot of time with my decision being scattered . can't decide on a course of direction cuz it its bipolar . but when I smoke I seem to become very sure of what I want with a sense of concentration(for a while) .

After he talk ZEN and afterward he talk about mahasi syadaw but what is his objection in this retreat he hosted. Such practice is normal in BURMAH Mahasi sayadaw. Objective is very important for meditation practioner. No objective one will be aimless.

It's said that 9/10 get it, eventually. 1/10 stops looking. But even without seeing the Grand Big payoff, you should still see the smaller payoffs of practice. And, what do you know, those small easy-to-dismiss payoffs are/is what the big one is made of.

devon washburn I have the deepest appreciation for Shinzen Young who’s teachings have been a life saver for me. So, I was thinking the same thing as I listened to this. I loved those books when they came out. But Carlos became a very destructive cult leader. Turns out he fabricated Don Juan, made him up from the many books he had read, though he was an anthropologist who did field work. In her book, the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Amy Wallace, the author (and daughter of famed novelist Irving Wallace) “unblinkingly reveals the inner workings of the “Cult of Carlos,” run by the charismatic authoritarian in his sixties who controlled his young female followers through emotional abuse, mind games, bizarre rituals, dubious teachings, and sexual excess. Wallace’s story is both specific and universal, a captivating cautionary tale about the dangers of giving up one’s power to a tyrant-and about surviving assaults on body and spirit.”www.amazon.com/dp/B00DACWAZI/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

Flexnet User when I made my previous statement I was not aware of these allegations. There is a peculiar thing that occurs at enlightenment. Given the modalities of his age I would wager he got caught up in the hippie movement and tried to experiment with his own techniques. It’s why shinzen approach is better in my opinion. Remember there is an evolution to enlightenment and as we begin to find out what works and what doesn’t these things should be less likely to occur. Mara is tricky that way sometimes. Each one of us awaken under different circumstances. And the way forward can be confusing at times. It’s why enlightenment is a never ending process and why today’s enlightenment is tomorrow’s mistake. kzbin.info/www/bejne/laSmm2yGed6Dqck

It takes Unbending Intent to engage Unbending Intent (stop on a dime) oh Mister Castaneda what did you do. We stand at the crossroads once again at the zero point where paradox lives. Paradox is the point of power and I totally believe Bashar. Homeless people don't count? What, too much no-self? When you eat out of trash receptacles in front of dozens of tourists you just apply the technique. Think about it.

Ooooh my gosh. Why making things so very difficult???? What this vdeo teaches is to be in challenging and fight with yourself all the moments of your day, while in reality it is not difficult to acheive the supernatural abilities. Iam going to write a vary very practical book revealing how easy it is to connect to and gain supernatural powers.

This guy has always been about one thing: measurements. And lists. I just watched him back in the 80's and he was just as pedantic, tedious and completely uninspired. And, what? "There are two kinds of people . . ." And why is he talking about Carlos Casterneda -- a totally discredited fraud, fake. No. Just no. If you like this guy there is SO much better out there. Like just sitting under a tree. This is awful. And all these cliches. And did you ever notice that the more expensive the event the louder is the forced laughter?
