I have been dreaming about doing a cummins swap for over 20 years. I remember finding your channel and was the 19th subscriber to the channel. Was living in Zimbabwe at the time. Finally purchased the project vehicle a 1954 Series 160 International. Rust free from a high desert home. Diff swaps, make it a 4x4. I have a divorced 205 transfer case. Deciding what to use a 4bt or 6bt. Looking for some towing use but also desire to have a better mileage maker. It has a Reading service body on the back. Enjoy your channel and the information you share with us. Thanks

Same here, I believe I was the 30th subscriber when I found his Tahoe/Cummins swap video on my old KZbin account. Rich had a slightly different presence/energy in front of the camera and I commented that he must smoke a lot of weed up there in Canada lol. It’s crazy to see how this channel has grown over the years from such humble beginnings.

I’m a designer (not engineer), but I work with engineers. They get a bad rep, because engineers get a set of parameters from business. They then have to make a design that works within those parameters. As a designer my job is to say, “hey, how is the machine shop going to make that? Do you really need to hold that tolerance? How are they going to assemble it?” We are there to try to keep them in check, but reality is sometimes because of design requirements the end result is a design that isn’t great for the end user.

Engineers don't design products: accountants do. And... 99.99% of the time the guys who design the drivetrain never meet the guys who design the rest of the vehicle. Imagine doing what Rich is doing, but with no ability to modify _anything_ on the motor. That's what packaging engineers do... It's literally an entire career of making puzzle pieces that don't fit somehow bolt together.

Everyone acts as though the engineers are handed the concept art, then just walk to the drafting table figure everything out before just a quick hand off to the tool/die guys. The engineers are handed a sh*t sandwich told to smile, take a bite and pass it around. As is everyone else down the line in lean manufacturing. Blame the accountants and the leadership that approved whatever smug SVP signed off.

As someone that drove buses with the cat engine I can testify that slow starting is normal for those engines. Had to teach other drivers in how to start them in cold weather so not to get a dead battery. Basically had to cycle the engine heaters twice before cranking over.
@NBSV1
@NBSV1 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. Had a customer with a box truck and one of these engines. That first winter we had to go out and start it a couple of times because they’d run the battery down cranking. First time we found that the big relay was bad for the intake heater. That helped, but when it was really cold they’d still kill the batteries just straight cranking. Had to show them to cycle the key and wait, then cycle the key again and wait. And, then only crank it for a little bit. If it doesn’t start then cycle the key again and so on. Suddenly didn’t have to go out and jump it off anymore.

@@krismorey Thank you for making me laugh! Had the same thoughts while I drove it home. Immediately took it to my diesel tech neighbor asking him how badly I just shot myself in the foot. (Thankfully after full scans and test driving, worst thing about it was the steering box that I replaced the next day!) Already had coolant filters, HPOP, fuel spring, oil feed tubes, and upgraded oil cooler installed. I decided to get a complete bulletproofing kit from Sinister Diesel just to verify and refresh the truck. Best case it lasts to 350k and the motor nukes, I'd be happy to get half that for what I paid. Dream truck is a 7.3 F250-350, '94-97, SRW 4D Long bed. Too bad finding a low mileage one of those in Texas, in good condition, costs way more than I can afford at the moment.

I love this series and cannot wait for more to come! I daily a 97 F-350 DRW CC 7.3 and I love it to absolute pieces. I used it to haul campers when I used to work for a company out of Indiana. My biggest recommendation, especially if you are going to be putting serious miles behind you in that truck, is to replace the seats. I've got the bench seats, but driving thousands of miles for hours in the same, old nearly as old as me seats really wasn't the most pleasant experience. Maybe it's just me being picky, but I know for sure your butt would appreciate it.

Any of the engines with the high psi oil fired injectors always were tough to get fired up and air worked out of that system. I worked at an IH dealer and rebullt a lot of the heui DT466 and some were just a bear after rebuild. Basically after overhaul we would let them get up to temp on high idle in the lot, if no leaks go find an area with a lot of hills and go run them for about 30 minutes. That would usually work the air out. Idling in the shop wont do it and it will start hard until you get all the air out. On the same engine i would also loosen the icp sensor before i put the valve cover on crank the engine (uvc harness disconnected) until oil came out. Made startup easier after overhaul. Good luck and truck looks good and coming nicely.👍

Anyways say hello to Vince, I use to work with him when he first got into the trade. I think it was at Sutherland Shultz in the Kitchener region. I mentioned it before but you may not of seen the post. Anyways I love this build. This is going to be One Sweet Truck! BTW Must admit it must be a pain for Vince to have to weld that dirty old aluminum, aluminum needs to be very clean to help achieve really nice welds.

That’s going to be such a cool truck. I work in a job designing machined components and the laser guys can hold some pretty tight and consistent tolerances. Only issue we ever found with it is the heat affected zone and blow out. On a project I was one we were cutting some 2x1 rectangular 1/4” thick stainless tubes. That tube is rolled into a circle, seam welded and then formed using dies. So there’s a lot of stress in the steel. The steel gets locally stressed relieved while cutting it and the tube would go from straight to banana shaped. When we cut it. Solution was to cut it on the opposite side which caused it to pull back straight. 😂

I have watched KZbin videos for years posted by Canadians & they always stopped at Tim Horton's for a coffee before work, so I was excited to try one. A couple years ago, I had to go visit a shop North of Ontario to do a Factory Acceptance Trial & there was a Tim Horton's across the street from the hotel I stayed at in Guelph. Maybe not the worst cup of coffee I have ever had . . . . but t was pretty darn close. No idea if the Tim Horton's in Guelph is just an exception, but II no longer feel deprived when I watch one of the Canadian KZbin creators sucking on a cup of Horton's coffee.

I saw a guy catch his pubes on fire with a oxy/acetylene setup. He got nicknamed bushfire for awhile.

I second this comment!!! It will also tie the front frame rails together since you’re running the newer bumper.

Very cool! I wish these trucks would of came with dog houses like the bigger trucks and vans, i don’t know if you plan on doing that with this truck, but it would make working in the engine a bit easier
