Go to any city, any town, any rest stop in America and you’re bound to find the same old shopping centers with the same stores and the same gas stations and the same fast food as any other city. How did just a few companies gain monopoly over the entire country? You know which companies I’m talking about - the Coca Cola’s, the Shell’s, the Comcasts, you name it.
First a little bit of background about what a corporation is. The word corporation comes from the Latin word corpus which means body of people. In fact in ancient Roman law, corporate entities were recognized and even given protection under the law. Similarly today, by definition a corporation is simply a group of people who have been authorized by law to act as a single legal entity. And while most of the time we use the word corporate negatively, corporations are not innately bad. They can be bad or good just like people. However, over the past 100 years corporations have gained certain legal rights that have allowed them to gain more and more power. Again - some may use their power responsibly for good, while others recklessly for bad. Think Google vs. Exxon-Mobile.
Corporations today are super powerful for a number of reasons.
First Corporations are allowed to create Political Action Committees or PACs for short, which are basically organizations that pool money from members and donate those funds to campaign for or against candidates, ballot initiatives or legislation. For example AT&T donated nearly $3 million dollars during the 2016 campaign cycle on funding the campaigns of possible representatives they believed would put out legislation in AT&Ts best interest.
Second corporations tend to spend a lot of money on lobbying in Washington in the hopes of influencing politicians on a particular issue. For example the oil company Exxon-Mobile has spent over $200 million dollars alone over the past 20 years on lobbying. Just in 2008 the company spent over $29 million dollars in an effort to defeat legislation that addressed climate change.
Not only do corporations donate millions of dollars to the politicians they know will act in their best interest, or spend hundreds of millions of dollars on expert influencers to try and get those politicians to sign or block legislation that will help or hurt their companies, but they also employ many “revolvers” or people who were at one time government employees that now work for corporations - strengthening the connection between corporations and government further. Of the 29 registered lobbyists that work for Exxon-Mobile, 22 of them have at one time been government employees. You get the point. Of course Exxon is just one example out of many - I don’t know why I’m ragging on Exxon, but I am - if you happen to be the CEO please don’t come after me, I’m just using you as an example. Anyways the point is corporations and the government is tightly wound up within each other.
So how did this happen?
Before the late 1800s, corporations were required to be public service organizations and have a stated public purpose. In other words they were a sort of gift from a group of people to serve the public good. They were tightly controlled and very limited due to widespread public opposition. In fact a common misconception is that the Boston Tea Party was a protest between the American Revolutionaries and the King of England, but rather it was a protest by the Americans against the monopolization of the tea market by the East India Company.

The critical error was in the mixing of corporations with the "public good". Thus corporation suddenly found itself at the center of political conflicts. This gave corporation a huge incentive to appear as if the corporation is on the side of the solution of the conflict, not the problem. They necessarily have to mold the legislation.
@peter_waldo3715
@peter_waldo3715 2 жыл бұрын
This may be partly true. The "critical error" is the teaching that the Law was done away. God's mandate upon government officers to implement His criminal and civil justice system was never taken away at the "Cross", like is commonly taught. God never took away His penalty for murder, nor His penalty for pickpocket theft. Thus, God never removed liability from individual actor - owners of properties. The whole "incoporate to lessen your exposure to liability" strategy is basically giving God's justice system the finger. It is the "way of Cain" (Going my own way and doing things on my own while calling the Creator irrelevant). So, you don't like tyrant multinational corporations ruling over you? Keep rejecting God and everything you try will surely get far worse for you and everyone else...and that's just what you will do. So, F you...and fjb.

Note how the only problems are due to the collaboration between government and corporations and not to the nature of a corporation itself. What a company can do is to offer you a product that you are free to buy. It's when they get in bad with government that problems then follow.

It is through international corporations that their TREASON is being manifested, those that claim to be American, whom dress American, talk American, but their hearts are everything but American! They desire World Government even so at the expense of every individual human mind on the planet! The collaboration between government and corporation began when Obama passed that law allowing a Corporate owned Government to take control over civilian resources during peace time, whereas, in the past it was only allowed during wartime! I assure you, they are passing these laws because they have every intension of using them against us! We are controlled through International Law now, because they are not enforcing the laws that protect us nationally.

Corporations, like government, need checks and balances: 1. Unions to represent the workers. 2. Consumer protection agencies to protect consumers. 3. Chambers of commerce to represent businesses. The problem is that the average person doesn't educate them self until we are in a crisis and they don't participate in their own governance. Corporations aren't bad, unless they aren't regulated. You don't leave a kid alone with a bag of candy and expect him/her not to eat it all. We are approaching a time in our history that no one needs to work more than 20-30 hours a week. I don't think the Lincoln quote is accurate, but good presentation on how corporations have been allowed to fester in society. Thanks for the video.
@Tom.Livanos

Yeah, I do not know about the Abraham Lincoln quote either. I have a few thoughts on corporations and corporatism. I imagine though that I am similar to you in seeing cooperatives as a means of providing justice and equality (and dignity) to people. As such I want to share numbers that, I believe, show that cooperatives are both significant in size and stable. These come from the International Cooperative Alliance: - 12% of humanity participate in three million cooperatives around the world i.e. approximately 960 million people (12% of eight billion) - In employment, cooperatives account for 10% of the global workforce. This works out again to be in the hundreds of millions of people around the world. I think all too often the perception is that cooperatives are about living in a commune and/or having long hair and/or 'free love' and/or taking drugs every day and/or being as lazy as one can possibly be. A kind of relic from the 1960s. Those of this perception seem to rarely, if ever, think that these hundreds of millions of people get up each day and participate in an enterprise, business, organisation, occupation etc. in which they and others share some stake - be it ownership or otherwise. One may easily find details on the web to drill down on the various forms of cooperatives around the world. The International Cooperative Alliance is like an 'umbrella group' which dates back to 1895. Historically speaking... well... haven't we humans been cooperating with another since our beginnings? Not to say that conflict does not also arise but the wider truth is one of cooperation. In any case, I appreciate your comment.

The birth of our nation coincided with the birth of Capitalistic economies whose engines were corporations. The Boston Tea Party, 14th Amendment, Citizens United v FEC, Burwell v Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. all illustrate a need in our society to decide just what a corporation is and what it is not. Our constitution defines for us our Executive Branch, Legislative Branch and our Judiciary. Perhaps within Constitutional Law we need to define what the definition, role, relationships, powers, limitations of corporations are within American society... like like we know the powers, relations and limitations of the President relative to the other branches, agencies, states, and the people of the US. Perhaps in a holistic fix we could thoroughly and comprehensively define what a corporation is (or is not) within the framework of a 28th amendment to the US Constitution? Corporations role and relationship would need to be addressed regarding corporate lobbying, exclusivity of laws (laws that apply only to Congress members), our spy agencies/Intelligence Community (IC), the Fourth and Fifth Estates (MSM has a credibility issue to overcome after this Second American Revolution), the military (perhaps even limiting the types of corporations who could bid on defense contracts), and it would, of course, be advisable to get an international consensus as to what corporations are. Regardless how the world defines corporations we should pursue "packaging" corporations and "putting them in a box." (Just like we packaged the presidency, the judiciary, etc.)
@Tom.Livanos
@Tom.Livanos Ай бұрын
1. I understand that separate legal personhood for corporations attracts production. 2. That some... or perhaps a huge huge number of people... see this as a positive i.e. wherever and whenever it may occur. Even so, production is only one aspect of human activity. There are infinitely deeper and/or wider matters to consider than production e.g. our inexorable dependence on nature to meet our physiological needs or to have human agency. It is the latter which, by definition, the legal doctrine of separate personhood for corporations takes away i.e. in a direct, immediate way. Yet legal codifications, doctrines etc. cannot overturn the essence of what it means to be human, to be alive, to live, to have human agency. Ideology cannot overturn/supplant reality. Ever. If separate legal personhood for corporations is taken away then law and the legal system shall... once again... more closely reflect life, this reality, however one wishes to word it. I mean... it is all just first principles, perhaps even axiomatic.

I am open to a comments exchange on this. How does your comment make any sense when, for example, then-Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, the 110th United States Congress and then-President George W. Bush lined up and gave a $700 billion bailout to Wall Street i.e. on 3 October 2008? A government bailout of the Wall Street banks i.e. the champions and epicentre of laissez-faire, free-market, modern-day capitalism. Since the 1980s... or "since forever" depending on one's view of history... these institutions have been front-and-centre saying government should get out of the way. And, for decades, financial markets got deregulated. Plus new financial instruments created with little to no regulation. That industry/sector of the economy gets itself into an awful mess - and they turn to the Federal government for a bailout. Do not even attempt to sort it out themselves or go somewhere other than the government. If this were not enough, the argument flips to one of "the government *has* to bail us out to prevent the contagion from spreading". All entirely open i.e. from both the corporations and the government. It was hardly some behind-closed-doors deal making here. Got its own acronym GFC, for Global Financial Crisis. You had former Chair of the Federal Reserve Bank Alan Greenspan.. since 1986 a gargantuan champion of financial market deregulation and loved by the sector.. publicly stating there is a fundamental flaw in the worldview he had held. I mean doesn't any of this... I dunno... leave any impression? At all?

Same here. If more people did this, the public could take back their power. Unfortunately, it is going the other way. Now the utility companies are taking over and forcing smart meters onto homes, limiting power usage, browbeating the consumer with a barrage of messages on how much power they are using, what the neighbors are using, how you compare with your neighbors etc. They are trying to bully people into and out of usage. Totally tied directly in with the government. Water companies doing the same. Right now it seems like a huge restriction on resource usage and the utility companies are in the think of it. Corporations have too much power they should not be allowed to have lobbyists in order to have political leaders have favoritism for those Corporation furthermore a CEO should be held responsible for any negative or positive action corporations make corporations are not like an individual a person that's not right money buys people what a shame for the United States of America what a shame 4 the politician best interest and not for the interest of the workers and the average American

Nothing will truly change because of the way our country views/runs on money. Good ppl/corps will lose to the dollar. Because the system runs deep, and ppl will eventually cave for food/ water and shelter (if not for themselves, for their loved ones) and guess what... that costs money lol

Your succinct, useful, and informative video is diluted by the distracting and annoying background music. I would either lose it or substitute something less intrusive. Just my 2¢.

People are corporations too. Strawman. We have no government they are corporations posing as our government.
@mkdcg
@mkdcg 4 жыл бұрын
Heh, that's why the government can claim things as private property, because corporations and individuals own private property. Even though the "law" states that private property is owned by non-government entities (eg. corporations). The "government" is a corporation and people like Trump and Trudeau are the CEOs. There is no such thing as public property. It's all private land or private land open to the public (eg. store). Even cities and provinces/states are considered corporations.

Read this it might help. you was registered at birth you are now a MR OR MRS LOOK ON YOUR CREDIT CARD AT YOUR NAME. WHY? Well when you sign up for any thing at all the law says you must both be a company and all companies must trade in capita EG: MR JOHN SMITH or MRS MARY SMITH.AND ALL COMPANIES ARE IN CAPITA AND NOW SO ARE YOU. ALSO THIS ONLY APPLIES IN CONTRACT LAW. I seem to detect that a lot of people are confused about the different laws, statute and legal. A requirement. a statute. legal and Must. Are not the true law. so the statute and legal law you must obey. But only If you decided to sign a contract with wet ink and agree to all above. All companies adopt these type of laws. eg: Mcdonald's the power companies, DVLA Swansea, the local Council, Credit cards, Banks , As you see I could go on and on. Also as the years pass by there are more and more statute laws added to these companies. this is achieved by lobbying a member of parliament to sit in on their executive meetings at something like 3 to £4.000 per hour. So now they can go back to parliament an implement these changes in statute law just to make things much harder for people to find a loop hole. Now contracts are much more binding than ever. But I have to say if you agreed to the above with a signed contract then pay, thats what you have signed for. Now all above is all to do with contract laws and companies. You will now see the difference from corporate law above and common law below. So, common law, also known as gods law, sovereign law, the peoples rights law, civil law, and true law of this land. If we disbanded our capita name, and go back to are birth name know one on this earth can tell us what to do where to go what to say Freedom will be your key. People will worry about money and benefits . Why WORRY??? if you are exempt from gov tax, council tax, road tax other tax , you won't need benefits. Hope this helps

No such thing as corporations equals positive for humanity. Their whole purpose is to work for the stock holders. In the end this has destroyed the soul of humanity. Profits over people. Example is cutting costs even with the knowledge that people will die as if its cheaper to pay off the family members than to make it safer. We lost sight and over time being sold the idea as job creation and a better way of life is only possible with corporations. Only to slowly surrender freedom to allow them to take control over our politic. We have so few local owners of business as corporations buy them up leaving us on a limited opinion to purchase. Giving them total power to charge what ever, because we have no other options. They buy everything with one purpose to grow. How much longer are we going to remain stupid and enslaved with a false sense of purpose. Sold the idea of a dream all that is needed is hard work to make it. They only way to change is to stop playing thier game and giving value to something instead of valuing what truly matters. Our hearts
