The national government would function like the eu and also regulate trade. Ever since the abandonment of the articles of co federation the nations government held most of the power. This is simple shit and you should have had to learn it to pass at least one of your grades. Why did you get those two mixed up? Under the articles of confederation (made long before the civil war) the states had there own money and couldn’t work together the electoral college was created for two reasons, the founding fathers didn’t trust us to vote and because it would be impossible to count all of the votes accurately they divided it up between reps

Well, I guess politicly, Two land masses would separate into separate continents, even though that is not a correct defenition, back then with limited tech, it was correct, kinda like Europe and asia, it depends on how you look at it, Most people could look at it like its two separate continents. But it would also be correct to view it the same, And back when they did, I assume they thought 'hmm, this is separate but huge land masses, lets divide it into north and south' it was basically two correct choices, and they chose the more popular one.

Basically, the Americas were physically split by the US because of the Panama Canal. Essentially, it helped the US get ships from one side of the continent to the other much faster. Conveniently, it opened the month before WW1 started, so it helped the USA get ships from the Pacific to the Atlantic when they joined the war. It was originally proposed by Charles of Spain in 1534 to build a canal through Central America get ships through faster, and was finally built by the US, finishing in 1914. The people of Nicaragua wanted it built through them, however panama at the time had been having a lot of separatist movements, and they split from Columbia in 1903. Panama also wanted the Canal built through them, and were willing to pay a lot less for it. The US agreed to build it, as they also wanted it built so they could get their ships though.
@AwayAtKeyboard7 жыл бұрын
In that case, I think it was probably Manifest Destiny, I've always been taught that the US wanted control over North America, which probably got Americans used to saying North America, rather than just America. If it's not that, then idk what it is.
@AwayAtKeyboard7 жыл бұрын
Europe became a separate continent because of how technologically advanced (for their military) they were, for Africa, i think it was mainly the Europeans generalizing about cultures and ethnicities, and since Africa is only connected by a little bit of land that a canal also when through, the Europeans decided it was easier to say it was a separate continent.

It's a union of states. Thought that was obvious from the name. Each state is in a sense its own country. In the interest of prosperity and preservation of freedom we united because we are stronger together then we ever could be apart. If the federal government were to ever break down like it almost has on several occasions. It is entirely possible for the states to become independent countries or several smaller unions.
@calicomorgan24087 жыл бұрын
Only that the preservation of freedoms is highly subjective, and that states trying to last on their own would fail so quickly and so epicly, it would be funny if not for the bloodshed. Please remember that a small handful of states carry the HUGE majority of military power. So if they so wished, they could forcefully take over other states in the event that the Federal government was no more. There have been studies where social scientists looked at possible outcomes of the US map, finding that about three states would grow to the point where the mainland USA would be three large countries, probably constantly warring. This is all besides the fact that a small state like Rhode Island wouldn't be able to afford to import EVERYTHING on it's own, and etc.
@ND-mn1rb7 жыл бұрын
They're not at all like separate countries, states can't make trade deals with foreign states or deal with foreign governments. However, I understand what you mean know that I reread it. If the whole federal government were to ever fail somehow, they could easily adapt to become countries.
@fishiefish61797 жыл бұрын
The states aren't like separate countries.they were more like separate countries originally under the articles of confederation in which the state governments were more powerful than the federal government. But that didn't work out so the founding fathers wrote the constitution and now they're just states

although the American definition of state isn't quite right because "state" would normally be another word for "country," but oh well
@jaycampbell64027 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct and this what most people miss. The word "state" is not synonymous with province or any other word to describe the divisions of a state or nation. Americans have been using the word "state" in place of province and so it has come to be associated that way. Originally the English word state referred to what we would now call a nation. In the English of the time, calling something the "united states" would be the same as calling it the "united nations."

LaTh: my thoughts exactly. That constituted a very outsider's perspective of trying to creating a parallel for European viewers. He should have sticked to West Virginia. Europeans (myself included) have no idea about insignificant countries like Latvia. No offence, because I'm Dutch--not particularly big either ;).

0:44 The Caribbean IS a part of North America. A simple Google search of the list of North American countries will tell you that. Jamaica, Cuba, Antigua, St. Kitts are all in North America.

Anthony Jackson It's not an empire, it's a nation with a lot of power that other nations either refuse to hold (I.e. Japan) or can come close to (Russia).

I would say what makes the USA a country, as superficial as it may sound, most and foremost, is that in the event the nation is under attack, the military force that would respond would represent itself as US Army, US Navy, USMC, US Air Force, US Coast Guard. So long as these powers are under a single commandership, US is nationalized for whatever form is ambiguous.

You missed one important fact regarding Puerto Rico. In 1910, congress gave puertorican born people united state citizenship. Therefor, the point you made regarding the atol is wrong. Yet Puerto Rico is still considered a territory and its people citizens. While residing on the island, they cannot vote for presidents, yet on the main land, they can. Therefore, review the materials. Also look into their involvement in the Spanish American war, the Jones Act, and its strategic placing during the cold war and the Cuban missile crisis.
