That E chord could be seen as a edim chord. Which over Eb becomes Eb713b9#11 to Ab major (4) Then 3625 back home.

I reckon the weird chord is Eb7b9/Ab Like secondary dominant to the IV Or Eb half whole dim over Ab

Yeah that’s another good take on it

No, functionally speaking, it is Absus, followed by A7alt, the tritone substitution for D7, the dominant of the next chord, G-. So I don't agree with Alfred at all. He is not simply harmonizing the melody, but everything that happens here is strictly functional. @@AlfredJrMusic

Thats probably what Cory was thinking in that exact instance! @@wgchris4

It's a Barry Harris substitution. A borrowing of Edim notes in a Ab major chord

I thought the same thing. Diminished chord over Ab, with the c on top as the melody. Now as for that whole tone chord…
@henkdevries20022 ай бұрын
makes sense, but that A in there would'nt be in the Barry Harris sixth diminished scale right? but its like a double diminished note in there (from Ddim scale), so the way I look at it you can borrow diminshed notes but you can also borrow double diminished notes for crazy dissonance (notes from F#dim7).
@henkdevries20022 ай бұрын
@@thepaellaman Yeah crazy chord, looks like Ab lydian dominant, but the way he voices it makes me think of it more like a Bb7 whole tone dominant over Ab. Like a dom7 #5 with a natural 9.

How about an E diminished chord over Ab. The whole chord comes from the E whole-half diminished scale, except the Ab which is your bass note.
