okay so, about Anpanman. to understand the meaning of the song and some parts of the choreo, you need to know who it is. "Anpanman is the main character from a popular Japanese children’s anime with the same name. Anpanman means ‘bread man’, and the hero of the show is a superhero whose head is a bun - hence the name ‘bread man’. His power is to save starving children by letting them take a bite of his head. Although he’s making other people feel better, doing so also makes him become weak. After saving the kids, he returns to a pastry shop that serves as his base, where the shop owner bakes a new head for Anpanman to replace his partly eaten head. After recovering, he returns to save more of the starving kids" (shamelessly stolen from the internet) that means that BTS not only want to be superheroes, they want to be the kind of superhero who doesn't have many special powers, not super strong or super fast or shoots lasers or anything - basically like an ordinary person. but they are willing to give away a part of themselves, to sacrifice, to become weaker, "keep secretly getting covered in bruises" just to help others :')

Anpan is a Japanese red bean bun and Anpanman is a Japanese superhero whose only power is that his head is made of anpan and he saves people by feeding them parts of his head that I guess regrows every day or something. I'm just reiterating info I got from other ARMYs when this came out but it's helpful knowledge! They're comparing themselves to Anpanman in that they don't have special powers but they give themselves to ARMY to help us through our hard times. Hobi also mentions Anpanman in his second verse in IDOL which was on the album after this one.

Anpanman is a Japanese cartoon, he's a hero that's made out of bread and whilst he isn't super strong or anything he saves people by breaking off part of the bread that makes him up and giving it to people. In this way he gives people his energy and becomes weaker to help them become stronger.

I teach Art K-5, and a few years ago our school theme was “we are superheroes.” I used to play the comeback trailer for this for my K students at the end of class as a behavior reward. They LOVED it!
