I’m a yarn crafter. First married Christmas hubby gives me this rather nice sewing kit. Heavy plastic fold out thing with just about everything a sewing fan could want. I blinked at it, said thank you and wondered what the heck I was gonna do with that. Fast forward 25 years when it finally fell apart and duck tape could no longer help it…I cried SO hard when I threw it out. 😂

My wife of 26 years will tell you I'm still moping over leaving a coffee cup behind in a hotel recently. There was nothing special about it, I got it from Dollar Tree on a trip years ago when I wanted to make tea in a hotel room in a cup I could also put ice in for soda. It stayed in my travel bag and served me very well. However, it was dark brown, and the only place I could put it when working on the tiny desk was very dark. Surveying the room before I left I didn't see it, and remembered it two hours south of Atlanta. I just hate losing a cup that has been my travel buddy for years, especially because I failed to properly police the room. I have no doubt it felt lonely and abandoned before housekeeping threw it away, if they even saw it. In a way, it was my Wilson. I have since bought a bright orange cup, but it's no Wilson.

Been married 25 years, and I bought my wife a Star Trek build-a-bear. This 47 YO woman cuddles with it when she goes to sleep. She just likes to get something that shows I still know what she likes. It doesn't have to be much. She doesn't get me anything, because if there is something I want, I get it. I don't want to bother with telling others I want something. Not getting me anything means more to me than getting me some random thing, so she gets me exactly what I want... Nothing. When you are young, you might have some ideal ideas of what gifts should be. The truth is it is different for everyone, and just showing you know your partner, that's what is special (even if it means the best thing is to not get them anything because they genuinely don't want anything.)

Absolutely accurate. There's a point you reach when you're able to buy what you need through the year, and what you want becomes a much smaller list. I've encouraged my SO to go through Amazon, make a wish list, and add to it throughout the year, marking off whatever they end up buying. Then I just hop on and look at what's left.

What should go on your wish list: Things you wouldn't buy for yourself for various reasons (e.g. the budget) but is still within people's Christmas giving budgets. The key to a good wish list is to not wait until Thanksgiving to put together a wish list. Keep updating it throughout the year. When Christmas comes around, you have a healthy wish list of 30 or so items of a wide variety of price ranges such that you won't receive all of those items (due to quantity/price/budget) and therefore can be pleasantly surprised when you get those items. You'd be surprised how often throughout the year you briefly think, "Huh, that would be nice," but fail to write it down and ultimately forget about it when the time comes to put together a list.

My husband and I are at the point where after 30 years we don't really give each other gifts because we want to make sure it's something the other really wants or can really use instead of something that will just sit and collect dust and eventually get tossed out or re-gifted. I now just ask for photos of loved ones that are either still with me (like our kids) or ones that have passed on and I don't already have. Love your family as much as you can while they are with you. That's the best gift anyone can ask for no matter how far away they are.

The worst is when one person in the couple is extremely hard to buy for, and the other person always buys them what they don’t need, and certainly don’t want. The person who is hard to buy for is very practical and would honestly rather just have nothing, rather than a bunch of useless stuff they don’t need. However, the other person can’t seem to get this in their head.

Storytime: my hubby and i are both huge nerds who impulse buy things for our hobbies pretty regularly. It began to be a problem for friends & family, because even if they thought of the perfect thing to get us, we probably already own it! So we had to instate a rule that we werent allowed to spend money on "toys" after halloween, and whenever the urge to shop took us, instead we had to add the thing to the shared wishlist til january. We're at the 11 year mark and this system works pretty good for us!
