I was shocked at his signing. IIRC, Bobby Robson had them sitting in 4th when he was sacked. And after that shock, we had to suffer Souness as a replacement. It was the only time as a Newcastle fan when I was happy for us to lose so that we could get rid of the manager.

To be fair any manager was gonna struggle after Bobby Robson. Happens to a long clubs when quality long term manager leaves. Next manager fails. Happened at Man United after Fergie with Moyes. Happened at Arsenal after Wenger with Emery. It happen at Man City when Guardiola leaves. It happens at Liverpool after Klopp leaves. Souness was a good manager for a top 10 team but was never a top 6 club manager quality wise.

Trouble with Souness is that he thought it was Craig Bellamy’s job to get on with him when it was in fact Souness’ job to get on with Bellamy. A temperamental player but also a good one who required a manager with first rate man management qualities. Something Souness completely lacked in.

@@robjj5373 Gordon Neeley his name was. He was caught abusing kids at Rangers and clubs before them. He had a meeting with the parent and child involved, then went and had a meeting with the abuser (Neeley) and Walter smith (his assistant at rangers at the time). The club claimed to have reported this to the police. But this never happened, Walter and Souness let Neeley walk to other clubs where he abused even more children. Police Scotland have confirmed no contact was ever made. Both Souness and Smith were close friends with Neeley. This is all factual information and is public record and findable with a google search, I’d never lie about something so abhorrent. Scottish football had a massive issue with abusers across all clubs but this is the only case where the child was abused in the first teams stadium & with management who didn’t report it.

Souness is and has always been a thug. Heard other stories of him assaulting various players at Rangers.

Souness failed at every coaching and management job for 1 reason and 1 reason alone. Hes missing that 1 important skill.. hes not a good people manager.
