How Crazy Eddie Built a $160 Million Empire of Fraud

Crazy Eddie owned stores in all five boroughs of New York, pioneering the electronics superstore. It turns out his empire was built on an elaborate fraud scheme that involved cheating shareholders, insurers, and even customers. As the company was taken public, a combination of hubris and family drama unraveled the whole thing and landed everyone in considerable legal trouble.

When I was in college, I had a lecture from one of the forensic accountants who worked on Crazy Eddie's. The first time they did an audit, they realized that they were moving inventory from one warehouse to another to get counted multiple times. The second time, the accounting team did a synchronized "raid" of all the stores and warehouses to make sure that didn't happen.

I remember loving those commercials as a 12 year old kid in 1980. I lived in MA but could get WOR out of NYC on cable. The day after Thanksgiving they would do a Godzilla movie marathon which was peppered with Crazy Eddie commercials. Including one where the announcer just wore a lizard mask and roared and grunted, but in the typical style of a Crazy Eddie commercial.

tbf Crazy Eddie, and the like, were inspired by an old used car salesman named Earl “Madman” Muntz. He sold used cars when nobody trusted used car salespersons bcuz there was no way to know the history of a car. He collaborated with an ad agency to come up with the “Madman” persona to insinuate that “this guy is crazy to sell a good used car at a discounted price” and thats the origin of the “Crazy Salesman” 😁

I worked at the Westbury L.I. NY store for roughly three years in the late 80s. I've gone into some stuff about that on here in various channels. I haven't read the new book on Eddie yet. I will. I worked first in the music/CD/video rental department, and then later when I got wind that the record departments might be closing or changing hands, I switched over to selling electronics and audio downstairs in the main audio floor. I also covered the Personal Electronics/appliances desks quite a bit, and even covered the stock room quite a bit, downstairs. Generally the place was a fun place to work, stocked with plenty of true characters, but also some very nice folks. Some of the managers were utterly meshugganah, including our later main store manager Steve Brodsky, who was imported from years of working in the Bronx stores I believe. A total wildman, but funny as hell! I never met Jerry Carroll, nor did I ever meet any of the Antars as far as I know. We had some of The Jets and baseball guys come in sometimes, Mark Gastineau, and some rock stars, even. I once met Neville from Belouis Some the new wave band who was doing some local promotion stuff. I still have his autographed 8x10! I also met comedian Bobcat Goldthwait who came into the record store one afternoon, I sold him a Twisted Sister tape! He was a very nice, quiet guy. I've actually met Larry Weiss (years ago) several times, since my mom later did tons of freelance advertising work for him in the 1980s. We used to go to his house/home office and talk to him and I'd tag along. A very nice guy. Very unlike the wacky Mr. Antar! LOL One of my day records managers was Dr. Dre.Andre Brown, who was later on Yo MTV Raps with Ed Lover, and a DJ and producer in NYC etc., and had made a movie later on. One day we got a call for Andre from none other than producer Rick Rubin! Andre quit one day (sadly) because he had a dispute with one of my other managers who was a known wacked out cokehead and kind of a jerkoff. I could probably write a book about the weird Crazy Eddies in-store lingo and code language that the employees would use, terms such as "sketch" which meant to screw up someone's sale or mess them up, and "keished" which meant firing someone's butt. Some of it was derived from the Antars' original native language or whatever. Supposedly. By 1988 or so it was clear the store and record dept. were on borrowed time, and a lot of my ex co-workers ended up working for The Wiz, which was already becoming a huge competitor. My old regional manager Scott Kaufman (RIP he passed away a few years back now) from LI ended up there as well.

Why would you "wish" that someone would do that to you? Are you that off-balnce that you go around looking for a fight? Do you while away the day, day dreaming about impossible scenarios where you beat the shit out of Men? Situations where you are the seeker of vengeance and beater of asses? Good luck with the surgery.

And what is that exactly because dealerships are some of the most regulated businesses. Extended warranties have loopholes to not cover certain things but virtually no one is defrauding anyone.

I started an advertising career in my early twenties. I made a TON of money convincing people that advertising would bring them more business. In retrospect I believe there is a great deal of deception and false promises in advertising. But advertising leads the business world. In my sixties I avoid most if not all advertising.

Advertising works plain and simple if you don't hear of a business or service of some sort people won't hear about you other than word of mouth I agree you prolly scammed people but you probably already knew what they were Advertising was a bust or you worked for scammers who didn't actually do good advertising

@@johnathancampbell1056 They published a fancy booklet of Rolodex cards. One Rolodex card in the book cost $2000. The deception was a promise to get the Rolodex card into "every Rolodex in the State." You had to buy a new Rolodex card for each county at another $2000. That's how I was trained, and no I didn't know it was b.s. at the time. I figured it out in hindsight.

Awesome upload as always! I’ve been hyped for it since you started teasing it. It’s CRAZY how the mind works. I grew up in Philly and I remember these commercials even though I assume the last ones would have aired in the very early 90’s, when I was between 1-3 years old. That is some grade A brainwashing, ahem, I mean advertising.

The commercials ran in the late 90s and they did commercial "edited re runs" using old footage of crazy Eddie and items/prices from the website. I would suggest you're remembering that.

Extremely interesting and informative,Just Amazing the Greed these guys have it’s just baffling!!! I’ve met Eddie in MCC Prison in Manhattan,,,and Trust and Believe he wasn’t a happy Camper,,he is a small man about 5’6 he was being extorted from sun - dawn. I was on a visit and a women was there to visit him and she was dripping in Diamonds and Furs, and he looked unimpressed and stiff. Man watching this brings back memories,,, What I learned from his Mistakes is never do business with family! And just be honest and do good business. Don’t steal.

I remember the attempted reboot store. It was on Route 46 westbound across from the Willowbrook Mall - not sure if that spot is Fairfield, NJ or Wayne, NJ - its on the border of those 2 towns. I was shocked to see it, since the brand was toxic by that time. Disappeared as quickly as it popped up.
