Perhaps the New Jersey and other mothballed ships should return to service to fill the large gap between the number of ships being decommissioned in coming years and the Navy’s goal of maintaining a surface fleet of 381 ships. It could be a great deterrent in the Pacific theater.

We don't need cannon fodder on the modern battlefield. Do you know what the range of an anti-ship missile is? Way more than the 27 mile range of those big guns
@Lollygagger-k4p6 ай бұрын
It has been suggested and rejected, based upon the logistics of just getting enough fuel into her. That's a truck that gets 5mpg, compared to modern destroyers that get 12mpg. She would need to travel with two oilers - just for her alone. Other concerns are the simple age and wear on the machinery itself. In preservation, it can last a long time, but these ships were buit with a short life span in mind, and to justwin a war. Re-tooling does not even exists anymore, and no arsenal builds the 16" shells, leaving the originals from the 1950's which can be unstable. Even if they removed the big guns and turrets, as well as all below deck suypporting structure, and replaceed all that with 300+ vertical launch tubes, the engines and related gear are all still very old. While it is certainly fast enough to keep up with the fleet, repairs would be complicated and no replacement parts exist. Making it into an Arsenal Ship by removing the turrets and most of the super structure would be awesome, but modern subs are more effective at that, and theyare already paid for as wellas being almost impossible to find and hit.
@SomeRandomHuman7175 ай бұрын
@@Lollygagger-k4p New Jersey's fuel capacity is approx. 2.3 MILLION gallons. That would last for four days at 33 knots, or over a month at 15-16 knots. In WW2, other than protecting the carriers, the other big job of the four Iowa-class battleships was to serve as a "gas station" for the dozens of destroyers accompanying the Pacific battle fleets. For the '80s deployments, this was still true--part of the recommissioning of the Iowas was conversion from bunker-C to marine distillate, what the rest of the fleet was using at the time. Not that I'm saying that New Jersey could or should come back, I'm just saying that your fuel argument is not a valid point.

@nole89236 ай бұрын
I still think it was a mistake for the pentagon to fully decommission these Iowa class battleships. They didn’t have to keep them fully manned and operated, but they should have maintained their battle readiness in case of an emergency. They’re the only ships that can continue to be operational after an EMP burst. They can even survive a nearby nuclear detonation. And anti missile jamming had no effect on those 16 shells. They can take a hit better than any other ship. They can also distract fire away from the carriers. I’m aware that these Iowa class battleships require about 2000 people to fully man, but the pentagon didn’t have to have them fully manned and operating. They just needed to maintain their battle readiness. We spend nearly a trillion dollars a year on defense. Much of that goes into a dark ops black hole that few people know where. Much of it to line the pockets of military industrial complex executives. And yet they say they couldn’t afford to keep these battleships maintained. If they did at least there would be something to show for all the money we spend on the military because today so much of it is unaccounted for.
@rogerwilco59186 ай бұрын
I stopped at "EMP burst". The only way the make an EMP is with a nuclear detonation. That being said, all modern military equipment has EMP shielding. It's called a "Faraday cage".. We've known about this since the 1800's.
