The U.S. government has tried to destabilize the tiny island nation of Cuba for 60 years all as punishment for Cuba daring to have a revolution and forge a path independent of U.S. capitalism. Yet Cuba has survived, and even thrived, most recently developing its own highly effective COVID vaccine while dispatching doctors around the world.
How did Cuba keep the revolution alive even as socialist projects in other Global South countries failed with the collapse of the Soviet Union? What was the role of individuals like Che Guevara in laying the foundation for all of this? What are Cuba’s greatest challenges today?
Rania Khalek is joined by Helen Yaffe, a lecturer in economic and social history at the University of Glasgow and author of “We Are Cuba! How a Revolutionary People Have Survived in a Post-Soviet World.”

Yep! You see those kinds of interviewers in the US and the UK mainstream media a lot, such as Fox News, CNN and BBC, because sometimes they invite a guess that dares to tell the truth and say things that those mainstream media don’t want their guests to say.

I've done medical tourism many times in Central and South America, and my doctors have almost exclusivelt beenCuba trained. They've always been smart, kind, proficient and knowledgeable of the medical state of the art, and GRATEFUL to the Cubam government for giving them an affordable way to follow their dreams. Contrast tbis with American doctors who come out horribly in debt and dependant on the for profit, money driven medical establishment. No absolutely vital human service like food, water and medicine should EVER be privatized. We have a lot to learn about socialism and how it raises the boats of the majority of working people.

The Cuban government and people are an inspiration to all countries fighting to fence off or shake off the authoritarian regime of the US that is trying to control and suppress the freedom and sovereignty of other countries. What the island nation of Cuba can do to maintain its independence and freedom of its people against the aggressive US regime mean that any country can do that as well. As long as local leaders cannot be corrupted by the US, it can be absolutely done.

I'm a leftist and support Cuba. Ive been there many times, have friends there with whom I still am in contact with regularly, as I am fluent in spanish. I have to add that we should not say that they are thriving..Surviving is the correct word, and I say we need to add the word, barely. These days they are suffering much. Shortages of everything. Even of bread. There aren't even eggs, much less meat. Power outages constantly, and all of the towns that aren't Havana have it even worse.

I think Ronia and her show Dispatches is an extremely important for Leftists. But she and her guest completely do not understand the struggle between Stalinist Socialism in One Country and Trotskyist Permanent Revolution. Stalinism is an entrenched bureaucracy that runs a state capitalist model. Which obviously becomes authoritarian to survive. There is also an entire history of Stalinist murdering any Socialist around the globe that did not follow it. On the other hand Lenin used the Trotskyist idea of Permanent Revolution to push forward the Russian Revolution of 1917. This is because the problem with Russia was it's backwards economic situation. Under Permanent Revolution the revolution expands outside of it's boarders and as newer states become Socialist there is a transfer of technologies. Which help build the productive forces. That is why, as stated in this interview, it was said that Che found discrepancies between what the Soviet economist was telling him and what he, Che, was reading in Marx's text. It's because Russia was not running it's economy under Marxist ideas... but under some type of state capitalist concept.

Both of them know much more than you. And they did a very good job here. You are turning things completely on their head and mixing stuff up. You are wrong on all accounts. Every paragraph is so full of historical and ideological falsehoods and mistakes that it would take multible pages to correct them. And it will take you many books to read to unlearn them. I hope you pick up Marx, Engels, Lenin, Che and more to educate yourself. The US propaganda that is mentioned in this video was swallowed by you hook, line and sinker. I wish you the best and hope that you overcome that brainwashing! You can´t be a Socialist and at the same time believe all of the anticommunist propaganda that is out there. Or you will hurt the movement and humn progress much more than you advance it.

That's the only way for you, dear foreigners, to realize the nature of the 11J protests. Like if everything was alright here for people not having any reasons for protesting 🙄. I consider myself a leftist individual, but this events and this kind of opinion just keeps me sad and explains how this dictatorship has survived for so long. Dude, I have a wife with 2 kids, she works at Provincial Housing Direction and I am an IT, we have zero businesses, we don´t sell anything, we don´t have family abroad, we live only with our salaries, and we live well, she buys some of the stuff we need in tuenvio, and the other stuff we get is what they sell from the notebook, the service stores and private markets. I don´t know what you´re talking about. As I recall the protests were because of the blackouts, which have been solved and because the US was giving money to the protesters to do so, or is it that you are blind enough not to see their propaganda on facebook, I think I remember seen one that said they would give 100 dollars to anyone that would break a store´s window, and 200 to the one that destroyed a police car. The ones that are in jail it´s because of vandalism, if they are brave enough to destroy stuff, then they should be brave enough to assume the consequences. If you want to do a protest, don´t be stupid and give the police a reason to arrest you, protest peacefully and nothing should happen to you. Pfff.

As, a person that still has family stuck in Cuba, this is just repulsing. Want to know why Cuba looks like it is stuck in a time capsule? It is ! Thats when Cuba stopped progressing. Americans are so naive.

So we are now glorifying a monster in history? Look at his role in the establishment of labour camps, the execution of political prisoners without trial, and the suppression of dissent in post-revolutionary Cuba. His ideological commitment to revolutionary struggle led to armed conflicts in various countries, contributing to instability and violence. While revered by some as a symbol of anti-imperialism and social justice, Guevara remains a divisive figure, criticized for actions considered authoritarian and in violation of human rights. It's so sad we are trying to find the positives in a person and system that caused so much human mystery that people have been fleeing for generations.

This is among the best socialist KZbinrs I always watch. Is Helen the daughter - or related to- David Yaffe? He took me to Paul Matick and I published a book 45 yrs sgo {I'm 76 now) about Marx. Mattick and capital accumulation annexing a traduction of Yaffe's great note.
