Artificers: what would happen if Meet the Pyro, Meet the Engineer, and Meet the Medic all combined into a class

As someone currently playing an artificer for a campaign, I can confirm this is 100% true. In my case there's a pretty hefty dose of Medic because we're a horribly accident-prone Party and no one has objected to having "cure wounds" cast by a demonic entity dressed in AU Iron Man armor and wielding a flamethrower for cauterisation yet 😅

The energy field that surrounds all of us and binds the Multiverse together is more of a weave thing, that's what wizards and sorcerers use. Granted, we dunno who created it, really, just that a goddess is keeping it going. Druids either get their powers through the worship of nature spirits and the Old Gods, or channel the raw power of the elemental dimensions. Depends on what edition you're using, really. In my own opinion, if it looks, sounds or acts like magic, you're doing it wrong. Of course everyone has their own ways of playing their characters and I'm not saying anyone should do things my way. But for me personally, I do my best never to use the words "I cast" while playing an artificer. My current one makes wooden animalbots which may or may not contain vials of acids and other chemicals (because alchemist). So when I cast Green-Flame Blade, what I say is "I grab a wooden ball the size of a handball out of my backpack, crank the key on it, and it unfolds into a small lizard with two glass vials in its stomach. It climbs on my warhammer and when I hit the gnoll, it jumps over to the next gnoll and barfs the contents of the two vials on it, which then ignite, and the second gnoll now takes fire damage. That's Green-Flame Blade." Again, my preference, but I think it's more fun that way. You can use magical components, but in my mind, the artificer themself does not cast magic spells.

Honestly, I prefer the latest separation of magic sources into three groups: Primal -- channeling the raw primordial energy of the Inner Planes, that underlies all of existence and shows itself through nature Divine -- channeling the refined godly powers of the various deific inhabitants of the Outer Planes Arcane -- tickling the weave, the Multiverse-defining implement maintained by the Goddess of Magic, in just the right way

Pathfinder 2e has a similar (pretty much the same) version of magic traditions, except that they're four. Arcane tradition uses logic and reason to categorize magic, so they have the broadest list of spells, but they're poor at affecting souls. Mechanically speaking they have the biggest spell list for pretty much everything (blasting, buffs, debuffs, utility), except healing and alignment damage. Common arcane spellcasters are wizards and magi (basically warriors who mix arcane study with martial prowess). Divine tradition draws magic from divine sources (deities, most of the time), and they're more defensive and less dramatic in their effects than other traditions, although certain deities may be more specialized and push through those limits. Basically they have the smallest spell list, mainly buffs, healing and alignment/positive/negative effects, but they have ways to poach spells from other lists (for example, all deities grant certain spells as divine spells, which don't have to be from said list. Like Sarenrae giving Scorching Hands, Fireball and Wall of Fire, three arcane/primal spells). Common divine spellcasters are clerics, champions (warriors of the gods who get their powers from Oaths. If you find them similar to paladins, that's because paladins are their lawful good subclass, but they have subclasses for every good and evil alignment) and oracles (spontaneous divine casters who, instead of praising a deity, they get their magic through a mysterious force, which comes with a curse). Primal tradition draws power from nature and instinct: and instinctual connection and faith in the world. It basically translates to animal/plant stuff, elemental spells, healing and summons. Common primal spellcasters are druids and rangers. And finally the Occult tradition, which draws energy from unknown and hidden forces dwelling within the very layers of reality. It's tightly linked to psychic magic, so what you will find here are mainly buffs, debuffs, and mental/negative damage effects, as well as some weird, niche spells. So mental effects in general. Common occult spellcasters are bards and psychics. Some of you may have realized I didn't mention some classes, mainly the iconic sorcerer. That's because some classes are not stuck with a fixed spell list, but they can choose which magic tradition they get. Sorcerers, depending on their bloodline, can be arcane (with the draconic or imperial bloodlines), divine (angelic or demonic bloodlines), primal (fey or elemental bloodlines) or occult casters (aberrant or shadow bloodlines). The same happens to witches with their patrons, and summoners with their eidolons.

You know, “wizards” in Harry Potter really are Sorcerers that Multiclass into Wizard, they develop some minor abilities during childhood(talk with animals, weak telekinesis, etc...) and although need a Wand(Focus) to do bigger stuff this is a natural power of their lineage(which might overtake humanity in numbers one day, since most wizards give birth to wizards, but humans also give birth to wizards sometimes), so they’re sorcerers, only after going to a school they actually get levels in Wizard by learning spells

@@Merilirem at the very least it isn’t a subclass I know, I also wouldn’t change the casting Ability since being smart doesn’t determine the power of your magic in Harry Potter, just how much you understand about magic, like, Harry isn’t the best student and has a relatively short list of spells he uses when fighting(as sorcerers often do), but he can still go toe to toe with a Lich, who also mostly uses Power Word:Kill(literally it what Avadakedabra is, it seems more powerful only because everyone in Harry Potter has a hp of 100 or less, since their martials are low level

The way I see it, there are 3 types of general spell casting classes: Warlock, Wizard, Sorcerer. Warlock: They get their magic gifted to them by entities of immense power. Fey nobility, demons, liches, angels, gods, etc. The entity can give the magic for any reason. A reward for devotion, a weapon for dominance, or a tool for exploration. As long as it was given to them by a powerful entity (not learned via study, and not obtained naturally), it is Warlock magic. Some Warlock Classes: Warlock, Paladin, Cleric. Wizard: They get their magic through study, research, and practice. Books, traditions, self-taught, apprenticeship, etc. As long as it was learned (not given by an entity, and not derived from nature), it is Wizard magic. Some Wizard Classes: Wizard, Arcane Trickster, Eldritch Knight, Bard, Monk (I think). Sorcerer: They get their magic from nature - like it or not. Pulling magic from the natural order, being born with this power for unknown reasons, unlocking their magic seemingly out of nowhere, etc. As long as it is from nature, in some way (not given to them by another entity, and not learned through study and practice), it is Sorcerer magic. Some Sorcery Classes: Sorcerer, Druid, Ranger. The list of classes is not exhaustive, but hopefully this will give you a general idea.

Ok, the best version of a bard you are going to see outside of D&D is actually in the cartoon Owl House. The whole frequency thing is displayed more than once. A good example is when the head of the bards guild whistles and uses the sound vibrations to destroy poison in his tea.

- What about Artificer? - unclear - so like, he uses it from a screwdriver? -yes, or it’s just tech we don’t have now - what? - he uses tech - for magic? - yup - so his shocking grasp is just an electric buzz? - yup - how does stuff like enlarge/reduce work? Or like… any tech we don’t have NOW? - please get off of my back about that - ok, I won’t even question it in this case
