I pretty much exlusively play in open tunings. As you talk about towards the end, it's the happy accidents you get by putting your fingers somewhere and seeing what comes out. If I start to get too comfortable with chord fingerings in a particular tuning, then it's time to try something else!
@thesethingsmakenoises Жыл бұрын
Yeah 100%! It opens up loads of new possibilities that would just sound tired in more ‘regular’ tunings.

Nice ti see alternate tunings are so popular, I've been using them for composing for close to 50 years now!...and it's been quite a journey!...
@glaurung66611 ай бұрын
I prefer open tunings too. DAFDAD for example which is open minor D, or open C for my 8-string guitar. I think a lot of guitarists underestimate the beauty and comfort of open tuning and for some reason play only in standard tuning, maybe dropped sometimes.
@boriscat19997 ай бұрын
I think alternative tunings force you to understand chords because you can more easily experiment and improvise. DADDAD is another interesting one, which has lots of D's across the octave as a power chord. and picking a base of D and D on two octaves while doing almost anything you want on the three treble strings, but it is very simple to walk through major and minor chords such as Em, F#m, G, A, Dm, C#dim with only three shapes on those 3 strings. and maybe you won't use the diminished chord at all.

I know I am a bit late but man I would really recommend you try DADGAE and leave that high E. It adds a completely different sound altogether and sounds much more dreamy/shoegazey than celtic.
@thesethingsmakenoises Жыл бұрын
Ohhh I’m gonna try this, thank you!!
@lukehenderson436 Жыл бұрын
Have you tried DACEAD or DADACE tunings (the latter might be easier on the strings if you do it as CGCGA#D)? Open D7sus2 I believe.
@killianmaduro3664 Жыл бұрын
@@lukehenderson436 This looks interesting :)) I am gonna try these on my acoustic thanks for sharing! Try DADF#BE for a really cool voicing. It’s the same tuning King Krule used to write Out Getting Ribs.
@lukehenderson436 Жыл бұрын
@@killianmaduro3664 cool, thanks. Any tricks/ tips for that? I got onto DACEAD/ DADACE initially as a simple way to barre and then use a finger for maj 7th (or just root again) and another for the 3rd or 4th. Plus you get two lots of DA strings for drones and can play around with notes on adjacent CE strings.

@ricardog.s2505 Жыл бұрын
I discovered this tuning through the band Sevendust, it is probably their most used tuning (but in Drop B, instead of D) and it easily became my favourite tuning of all time because it sounds beautiful when you want to, but also very dissonant, noisy and heavy if you put effort in it

This is great, really inspiring! I've been dabbling in DADGAD and other tunings for quite.some time. A couple of weeks ago I wrote s complete song with lyrics and all on my acoustic guitar. Right now I'm recording an electric guitar version. However, I mistakenly had the guitar tuned to DADGAE 😄

Im not a guitarist but I go make noise. Ive always tuned my old Teisco to DADGAD, I love the sojnd with a slide, stacked dirt and a sprinkle of classic sounding room or spring verb. A twist on a vintage sound on a modern fx chain. I struggle to play anything that sounds bad!.I always assumed that this was drop D in my lack of any musical knowledge. Great vid.

Yes, Led Zeppelin's song, "Kashmir." That's probably the most famous DADGAD song ever. I also recommend checking out some of Devin Townsend's music - he isn't in this tuning, but he tunes to CGCGCE, which is just Open C Major, another great sounding open tuning influenced by Celtic music.

Maybe you could get your channel viewer's to submit/collaborate on a song with you, or maybe song ideas, riffs that you could then edit on all that cool gear you've got? Just an unformed idea really, anyone else think of how that could work or if it's even an idea worth pursuing?
@thesethingsmakenoises Жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s a cool idea, I was thinking of maybe starting something where people can send clips of songs or tones and stuff in advance and then we could discuss them on live streams etc. think that could really work. Especially if people are having issues with dialling in tone or something that I might be able to help with
