I had incredibly strict and sheltering parents growing up. I was home schooled, home churched, wasn't allowed to listen to secular music, couldn't date and I wasn't allowed to make any of my own decisions. So when I left at 17, I went absolutely crazy. Became addicted to drugs and self destructive behavior. Until I met my wife at 19. I've been improving ever since. Now that I have my own kids I am raising them totally different than I was, much like the "authoritative parenting" you described. So far they're turning out great! I still struggle with anxiety and depression, but every day I get a little better, and if you had a similar experience and are struggling, so can you :)

I come from an Asian family and they’re pretty strict. I think strict parents fails to realise that children are humans too, and they have their own feelings, opinions, needs and wants. They should really think about these factors before cramming stress and discipline down the children’s throats.

When I was younger, my mom yelled at me over something. She then went in for the hug to tell me she loved me despite just yelling at me. I dodged the hug and my mom got even madder and said me not wanting to hug her was a slap on the cheek. A different time, she asked me what I was afraid of, I said, “you” and she yelled back. My parent yells at me everyday, yells at me for crying, tells me to stand up for myself when I never can thanks to them, teaches me how to lie, always says that they respect my opinion when they never do, and so much other stuff. And my parent wonders why I hate talking to people and why emotions are hard for me to control. She somehow believed me when I told her Im not depressed (“funny” enough I have depression and also yes I know the different meaning of “depressed” and “depression” ok?) and she believes me anytime I say that I’m happy when I’m sad. Thanks Life Noggin, I really hope this can teach parents, I'll be honest I'm a 12 year old girl. Yes really, I spend a lot of my time on the internet and I'm always afraid to admit my age as people online think I'm just a spoiled brat. Off topic I've always lived with my mom and well.. She's an alcoholic and I've just accepted this, until I was 10, I learned the danger of alcohol and the impacts it has of children.. like me and because I've gone through this so much I can notice the earliest signs of someone becoming drunk, even before anyone else can notice and when I say something their like "Oh she's just tired and bored" and guess what? She's drunk 1 hour later. But I've had some moments from her that I will never forget, one time she literally took me to the alcohol store and I told my nan that she took me to the store, she caught up to my mom and right when we were about to leave after getting the stuff my nan pulled up and wanted me to get in her car, obviously I wanted to go with my nan but my mom tried to convince me to stay, I eventually went with my nan and I can't remember the rest.. sorry but I go through that stuff a lot or she yells at me to sleep at like 6pm, just recently I've started to realize that.. this is my life.. this is how I live and how I will most likely remember it.. I really hope no future parents do this to their children and for those that are in a similar spot like me.. go with your other parents, talk with the person drinking and if they don't listen as a last resort, call Child Protection Services, it will be hard but if its all you got you should really do it. Thanks for reading this I had to this long and hard to post this but it's probably worth getting the stress off of my shoulders.

I believe spanking is good until a certain age of probably around 9, then you try different tactics. Spanking an older kid or teen will just make them angry and it only lasts a short second; However, taking away a privilege works way better because it gives them time to reflect on what they've done wrong and also lets them know that most everything they have actually belongs to their parents who lets them use it. Best case scenarios would be a phone and a car. Those are wants not needs and they don't belong to the child or teen.

I had 2 different ways of growing up. With my mother and stepfather it was horrible punishes that mentally drained me, while I was rarely never abused physically the mental abuse was nonstop. Then when I went to my dads I saw how real parenting worked and was barely punished the way I was at my mothers. In the end I have a stepdaughter and I was taught 2 ways, what NOT to do and what works and I am forever thankful for my dad showing me the right way.

@boxpin8967
@boxpin8967 2 жыл бұрын
@@bruh.5620 “Get over it” is the worst advice you could give. When I said “Pick a side”, aside from doing it to be funny, I said it because certain parenting methods work, and others don’t. Having a bad day is never an excuse to be insensitive or rude to others. When I was have a bad day, and someone yelled at me because I didn’t clean my room, that didn’t give me the excuse to yell back. Although I was in the wrong, if she was understanding in that situation I would’ve learned to do those things more often. Science has proven that discipline doesn’t have many positive effects. It causes kids to be more closed off, sneaky, and it doesn’t accomplish the original goal. Being understanding and talking to your kid as a parent will condition them to do what you said, because you know you’ll be rewarded by having a happy parent. Motivating someone to do something out of fear doesn’t work as well, because it will make them think irrationally, demotivate them to be productive, and will cause resentment and stress. If she was having a bad day, she could openly say, “I’m tired” and take a nap or rest. Or if she was working, she could just do the right thing and rather than projecting her anger on others, just plan to deal with it later. I wrote this comment 11 months ago, so you can imagine me and my mom’s mental states. Always inside in quarantine, we were tired, drained, and sad. Although I understand where she was coming from at the time, and why she acted the way she did, it doesn’t excuse it. I was going through burnout at the time, cans was constantly drained by school work that I could no longer keep track of due to my entire school system changing to an entirely open schedule with only online videos, and very little help in keeping track of my assignments; combined with the lack of seeing or even meeting people, I wasn’t in a good place. So you can understand my frustration when I was met with a lack of understanding. I could simply get over it if I wasn’t constantly dealing with it. We should be very grateful to our parents, but they’re not perfect deities. They’re people, and have faults that we can recognize. When I wrote this comment, I was probably just mad, and felt like venting, but saying “get over it” doesn’t help. It makes it worse, and I hope you understand why.
@bruh.5620
@bruh.5620 2 жыл бұрын
@@boxpin8967 i wrote a 10 word sentence, why did you make an essay. okay first of all saying that you shouldnt be yelling at people because ur having a bad day is true, but its very hard not to do. as you said, people arent perfect. so why should you expect ur parent to be perfect by always being the best parent to you. 2 why did you say the things that the guy in the vid said i watched the vid u know... 3 youre kinda a hypocrite at the end cause u say you said all this to vent on me, but you wont let your mom vent on u. the reason i said get over it is because u seemed like every other kid being like "i hate parents" without having an actual reason other than "they take phone away :CCCC" or "they were mean to me because i did something wrong" i mean im an introvert and i stay on my phone for hours, but i dont care if its taken. the reason why i auto assume this is because everyone here despite making essays doesnt explain what theyre going through, but im glad u did. k im tired bye
@boxpin8967
@boxpin8967 2 жыл бұрын
@@bruh.5620 well to respond to a couple of your things, I said things that the guy in the vid said because from your response it seemed like you hadn’t watched the video and we’re speaking under the opinion that discipline is the best option. It was my fault to assume that. And when I said I wrote the comment to vent, I mean the original comment that I wrote 11 months ago. Venting isn’t blowing up about small things, it’s stating your issue and not really needing a response. My mom didn’t “vent on me because she didn’t tell me her actual problems, which I would’ve been happy to listen to because I’d be glad she was being more open with me, but she was just handling things incorrectly, and channeling her anger and tiredness towards me without apologizing or even being rational at times. Also the reason I wrote an essay (sorry about that btw) was because when people say things like “get over it”, it feels like they’re disregarding others’ experiences and traumas, which is something that is important to me. I’m glad you were respectful, and again, sorry for blowing up at you.

My parents are like a mix of strict and chill. I have my freedoms and restrictions. Admittedly they sometimes shelter me a little too much. They did spank me when I was younger. They stopped when I was 8 years old, where I was old enough to just talk about what I’ve done and stuff. It worked for me personally. But every child is different.

Everyday, I'd come home from school and the 1 st thing I do, is give you my phone...don't want any distractions, then I do my homework, then all the chores for that day, which must be done to your satisfaction. Then do whatever you tell me to do with no back talk or arguing. On the weekends, I'd do what you want me to do, Before I have my "Free time"

This is a real history: When i was younger my mom beated the crap out of me because i had a youtube channel(with less then 10 subscribers)and i made a joke about my grandfather needing money for a prostate surgery(stupid children joke that barely no one saw)she beat me with her hands,with her sandals,choked me and even throw me towards the wall making me hit my head really hard,and guess what i started bleeding but even with that she told me to go study to the test i had on the other day. on the other day she put some bandage around my head gave me some painkiller and send me to school with a letter to my teacher and the principal saying that i hurted my head in the doorknob because i slipped on the wet floor. She tolds all her friends(every women on the street about it)and guess what again all of then tough i was the bad guy on the history Now i not only pray every day to be able to live till i turn 18 because i want to go the hell away from here(Brazil)and start over a new life on Canada because i want to be far as possible from her

I had a strict mum and step dad, and I was emotionally and mentally abused, luckily there was no physical abuse. Just over a month ago we got into a fight, at that time my mental health was really bad to the point I developed a bit of anxiety. Literally when I was having a severe anxiety attack they continued to yell at me and make me sound like a bad person and things like that, then 2 nights later they kicked me out of the house and sent me to another state to live with my dad. I had to leave my boyfriend friends and memories behind, but there was one positive side to the note, my dad and step mum respects me and wants to fix my mental health into a good healthy one, they don't yell at me, put pressure on me, hurt my feelings, or make me feel worthless. And within most of march, I felt like there is a place for me to feel safe and not unhappy. For those out there with strict parents, things will get better, even if it means to leave everything behind and start a fresh new life.

Recalling my... Experience with strict parents, I never really developed much if a bond to them due to fearing them. I decided to help them out, but it led to me becoming even worse than before. I don't talk to them much or tell them much either. Goes to show the effects of strict parenting on children. Then there comes the effects on their social, emotional and even physical health. Parents shouldn't be doing all this just to make their kids listen. They should spend time with them, talk to them and develop a bond not associated with fear. Thank you Blocko for creating and sharing this video with us all. Hope to see more content soon

I had the opposite problem; I grew up in neglect, mostly because my mother had back surgery and couldn't move around too much, and my father had a few mental health issues, resulting in him taking a lot of medication that probably sedated him to a great extent. As a result, my siblings and I basically had to raise ourselves, with me taking the lead on raising them. Less than a decade ago, I also learned I am autistic and suffer from generalized anxiety; more recently, it's been deduced that I might also be bipolar, which is not helped by the fact that my father was bipolar-schizophrenic. So yeah, how about you guys?

Nah it's bs lol, there's a difference between making your child avoid trouble, conflict in the future, and leaving your child in the streets out free all day taking drugs and wanderless. I'm 14, my parents can annoy me at times, we are kids, we rebel against them at times. We need punishment, but not things that are way too far like maybe abusing your child with either fire, weapons and stuff like that. You have to realize that we gotta appreciate parents for intentions, I'm sure a simple spank will not cause depression and all that. I've been diagnosed with anxiety and I know it's tuff, but like at times it can be because a lot of people online, public, trends can influence on us and make us cause mischief. Parents won't be in your lives forever and you will realize that they have made a great choice of discipline, we children can also say stuff too that can abuse parents, such as hateful things, which can hurt them a lot of you think about it. Some strict parents can be helpful in your lives. My mom had a very strict mother,she'd hit her with belts and lots of stuff, and my mom surely does not have mental issues, she's a very much responsible mother of three, along with my dad that had an awful past too. But they are the most civilized parents I've known, but oh well it can affect people differently depending on their mentality 🗣

As a kid of a strict parent i literally dont even like my mom she is robbing my childhood. I am planning on barely talking to her when I grow up because she has made me miss so many things in my childhood.

I been through two types for most of my life with my real mom she was more laid back which would lead to a little neglect at times but I would have more freedom and with my stepmom and dad I was in a Authoritarian parent style which would cause stress, depression, and I mostly felt like I was trapped and was feeling like a puppet with no freedom at all which led me to rebel but not in a physical way but mostly mentally as it would help me shape more of my personality towards myself and help me figure out the pros and cons of my personality in the future I also got to experience a authoritative relationship with my friend’s parents who have the right balance which makes me feel more comfortable with them so if I had to choose I feel all parents should go for the authoritative approach which could help them have a bigger impact on their life in a more positive way than the other two does

My life living with strict parents: • was never allowed to go off my street when outside by myself, even if I’m just goin to a friends house a street over. • Always berated for not getting the “best score” or being “top in the class” • Constantly being compared to others • Getting yelled at for petty things that could easily be solved • Not being allowed to talk back, even if I have a valid argument or point in a conversation • Having parents that think the concept of mental health is taboo *Theres a lot but this is just a generalization of what goes on.*

Dolphin Go Boop Your parents suck. Why would they compare you to other people? Why wont they let you just cross the street if it’s RIGHT THERE and you know what to do at the road?! *_WHY TF WOULD THEY MAKE YOU GET STRAIGHT A’S?!?!_* People are so messed up, and your own parents need parenting lessons.

I quited playing the piano in 2015 and the piano in the living room is just a decoration now. Meanwhile my mom compare me to literally anyone that can play the piano she can find. She doesn't say it, but I know for a fact she does it just to convince my to play the piano again, and it ain't working

my mum never has and possibly never will hit be as 'discipline' but she does other strict and overprotective things that drive me insane. she has an app where she can manage my phone from hers (for example look at my location, look through my search history, phone lock etc) and it is for my 'safety'. I don't think she realises how bad this is. I never have privacy and she can pry into my life whenever she pleases. she has full control of what apps i download, almost every social media account i have, location, screen lock and search history. i honestly cant wait to move out and im sick of it. whenever ive tried to tell her that i feel unsafe and monitored everywhere i go i get in even more trouble and told it for my safety. she also claims to 'never look though it' but if that was true, why would she have all of this in the first place. i was told i was acting like a female dog (not said as nicely tough) and i was punished for trying to tell her how much i hated it. i don't know what to do now but im really sick of it and i want to tell her but i'll get in trouble again. what should i do about it?
