Following on from my last comment: When Tatay George (my father in-law) met me for the first time he sat me down and threw questions at me. One of the last but the most major one (right after he brought me a massive bag of FRESH Ube=YUM!) he said 'Do you work for a living?' (at the time I did not know the reason why he asked this but I did not realise that unemployment is between 6 and 10% over there). I replied of course I work for THE PRESS as a Computer Engineer, that I am a trained IT Project Manager and my degree is in Ancient Middle-Eastern history-specialising in Sumerian language and cuneiform. Then right away I dumped out two years worth of pay slips in front of him :D He was impressed and then he gave me permission to marry his daughter. Sadly cancer took him from us earlier this year and out of all of his son-in-law's he loved and was proudest of me the most. Not for the reason that I am a foreigner, it was the reason for my accomplishments and creativity. We lost him a few months ago and I loved the man like a father; he was such a good man. Anyway he was hanging on to life just to tell me one thing as im the next eldest (age 50) that now I am the Tatay of the family. IN the provinces they lay people to rest in concrete coffins so when I am next over there I am going to cover the tomb with purple tiles as my respect for him.

Third story, I was in Kidapawan city itself and those who know the area might be aware there is a restaurant/ice cream parlour called 'The Pink Haus' there. Anyway I was eating a lovely Halo Halo (with Ube on top of course) and this guy could not stop staring at me (I think to put it politely he was a Badding) and my wife was sat there right opposite me eating hers. Anyway I got up and his mouth hung open in an a big 'O' I think its for the reason im a tall guy and fairly fit for my age (intense martial arts) anyway I told me wife to ask the Pink Haus owner why does this guy keep staring at me? So the owner shouts out so all can hear' 'The reason is he's a tall and handsome guy' so anyway I pay up and my wife tell me that the guy was staring at my arse all the way out of the shop. Was so embarrassed and of course my wife made fun out of me (and so she should) for a few hours afterwards.

I made the mistake of taking a bus going to Zamboanga. I was only about 2 bus stops away from the city when someone told me I was in extreme danger. I got on a new bus going back the other way and was lucky to survive. I wondered why nobody will sit next to me or talk to me on the bus. They did not want to be next to me if something bad happened.

I'm British, married to a Filipina, and always seeking cultural information to expand my knowledge. I flew alone to Mindanao several years ago, and I found the people to be very friendly, and I also noticed how clean the roadsides were. On Luzon, the roadsides are generally covered in litter. I would definitely visit again, and hopefully GenSan. And by the way, I always tell everyone that Mindanao girls are the sweetest.

My wife is also from Mindanao. We have been to Mindanao 7 times in the last 12 years. (That plane ride really sucks) I have NEVER seen Any violence what so ever. But I will say, I have only been to the northern part. CDO, Ozamiz City, Oroquieta City, Dipolog areas. If the Ph's. ever opens up again, we plan on moving/retiring to Oroquieta City where my wife is from. Quit, nice little town. Plus most of the typoons miss that area too.

I have a story here: I am English (UK) and also Northern Irish (Belfast) by way of my mother and I have a broad Yorkshire accent but if I am angry there is a slight Belfast twang: Anyway my wife is from the Philippines , Kidapawan Catobto province. Anyway she gave birth to our daughter in M'Lang general hospital (you can check as we had the first foreign birth there), later I was outside further up the road getting my wife some fresh soup, when a terrorist jumped out in front of me with a knife and shouted "Do you want to live sir?" I shouted back "You might get away with that with the weak friendly fire Yanks, I am however BRITISH and we have (bare in mind the slight Belfast twang when I shout) fought against Terrorists (The IRA) that make YOU look like pusses in in comparison" i"i THEN SHOUTED COME ON IF YOU THINK YOU ARE HARD ENOUGH?" anyway the terrorist's face went white and he ran off. The people looking ( the shop with the Panda sign outside) looked aghast at me and so I shouted back "You lot might be used to dealing with a 'JOE' (American) but there is a REASON why we British conquered most of the world. But seriously I survived BELFAST during the 1970's and these Philippine wannabe terrorists are weak in comparison. I am not afraid of some jumped-up[ two-bit Islamic terrorist in the Philippines, not when I had the IRA on my doorstep for many a year. All of this is checkable too as my wife's sister works at that hospital. BTW it also helps if one's own father is an ex Royal Marine/SBS Commando (rm24656) you learn to project confidence and are forced to know the basics on being able to look after ones self. Show fear to these scum and you are kidnapped , show power and like most cowards they run for the hills. I also have photos of around the area etc as proof.

I was in Iligan in October 2019 and the only other white people I saw was a contingent from the UN who had PH army support. Situations can be extremely deceptive. I don't speak Visayan (or Tagalog) and I deliberately ignore most of the attention I get (I don't go around looking at the ground but I'm aware that I get looked at). The downside of this is that there is no way to blend in or watch / listen for potential danger signals (and what would they be?). The reality is that a westerner is a potential high value target for mugging or kidnapping and there could be spotters at hotels or malls or following and I'd have no idea whatsoever, and neither will you. The final point is that where governments recommend that their citizens don't go also means that travel and medical insurances are invalidated. You need to have access to cash in a hurry. Sorry, one more point, if you are meeting someone, because they are local they won't understand the risks to foreigners. And even the day to day risks of say higher traffic accidents and diseases are normal to them. Until a Filipino spends time in a western country they won't fully understand the differences. I'm not saying don't go - I did - but don't pretend that you think you can properly assess the risks - you can't.
@pauls47423 жыл бұрын
Best comment ever - I've been to the Philippines numerous times and have travelled to over 30 countries and I couldn't agree more. Appearances can be deceptive and just because a local tells you it's safe, doesn't mean that it's safe for you. Remember that you're an rich outsider and you stick out like a sore thumb in a poor, corrupt country.... keep that in mind at all times and act accordingly .... and good luck.
@YourlittlePinay3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that sir. This helps my channel and people to learn more. Salamat po!

@@pauls4742 I'm currently in Lagos, Nigeria but when I go to Warri or Port Harcourt I am escorted with 1 or usually 2 armed Police everywhere I go - except hotels and malls. There are signs outside of malls and hotels that no guns are permitted ... although it seems that rule only applies to the police (civilians actually aren't permitted guns) but the army and navy can over ride this. A local engineer who lived and worked in Warri was kidnapped and held for 10 days prior to Christmas. Kept blindfolded the whole time. His driver was shot. I know of 2 women who have been robbed at knifepoint and in one case had their bank account emptied (phone transfer). Casual theft of mobile phones, wallets, bags etc is endemic. And in the north of the country there is no law and schoolchildren are being kidnapped, running gun battles, and so on.

They have Samal Island which you take a ferry boat from Davao and it's about 10 minutes ride, they had two Forgeiners kidnapped and beheaded by Abu Sayaff a couple of years ago.
