This could have been solved before it became a problem if the studio: 1. Communicated the change of actors properly beforehand. (Do a review with old cast to show how old they got or literally anything.) 2. Didn't call it "Wimpy Kid 4" but maybe reboot. (The milking cow to and above limits problem.) 3. Tried a little bit more in choosing proper actor for the role. (I don't doubt that he is a good actor but why would you make Asian guy play biological son of white parents?) 4. Didn't dumb down character to the ground. (Literally character assassination.)
@TrykusMykus7 сағат бұрын
Yes. I think #4 is most important here. The creators of this movie funded the kid 3 years of depression and harassment. I'm pretty sure the main character of a movie called "diary of a wimpy kid" is supposed to look like this guy. But there's a difference between making him look wimpy and making him look like a total weirdo. It's just another example of creators trying to squeeze the last drop of money out of a franchise while not understanding what made it money in the first place. And the saddest thing is, they gave this kid only $75k for this harassment campaign... And that was the first reason why they didn't make a 4th part with the original actors instead of waiting for 5 years to recast the characters - they didn't want to pay them higher wages anymore.
@lightworker29566 сағат бұрын
Yeah. I think there's too much focus on the actor not being great / not being a great fit / looking weird, and too little focus on the modern-day writer tendency to make all male characters either dumb or evil.

The only recast I can think of that wasn't met with hatred was Andy Whitfield in Spartacus replaced with Liam McIntyre. But that was only because Andy was battling cancer, stepped down to focus on his health after the show did a prequel before the 2nd season to initially give Andy time to overcome it, but then he later succumbed to it. People didn't like Liam as much as Andy, because Andy was so iconic in the role, but they understood why it happened.

Real reason for the change in cast: I forget if it was the actor that played Greg or someone else, but one of the cast members tried to assassinate Justin Trudeau. Within that time, there was various other changes made to the cast, but what happened with Justin Trudeau definitely put a worse name to the films as a whole.

I think a lot of the backlash and bullying against the new cast members came from the fact that the studio did not even attempt to have any continuity between the old cast and new cast. No rational person expects the studio to be able to find new people that look identical to the old cast, but some attempt could’ve been made with hair for example. All 4 new cast members have different hair colors (even if only a different shade) and different styles, from the original cast with only Frank’s hairstyle looking slightly similar. No attempt was made to use wigs to replicate the hair of the original cast on the new cast. I believe this would’ve helped a lot, especially with Rodrick who actually does have some similar facial features with the original (this could be why he was chosen despite inexperience and not resembling the other cast as far as being half Japanese.) I don’t know enough about this stuff to know if the budget for filming would’ve permitted this but the shape of ones face can be changed somewhat using silicone prosthetic SFX makeup. You can see this used often to create elf ears, scales, horns, burns, Decay and wounds on Zombies and Its used a lot on Aliens too. It also can be used to do things like make a young person look like they are 80 or sculpt faces to make famous actors less recognizable, like they did with Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. Point being, no effort was made here. Clearly, because they could’ve made this work if they wanted to.

I disagree about him being ugly if he had an amazing performance/personality no one would have a problem with him being ugly

I hate how the actor came out with his experience and people are acting like calling out movie directors/companies for their horrible decisions is wrong. It isn't. Telling a movie company that the slop they are producing is not good, is a good thing, and that's what we did and that's what happened. The only people that should feel ashamed are the people who actively and directly harrased him.

I feel for the new actor, he was probably so chuffed just to get such a well known gig then the Internet ruined it all. Blame the casting not the actor!

I was a teen when this thing happened...it swept through my high school like a wildfire. "Not my rodrick" gained traction because it was a kind of insider joke that teens wanted in on rather than a serious critique of the actor. It was definitely taken too far at Charlie's expense. Basically, group bullying for fun....awful

Buddy was not even bad looking , it’s more that a certain character is usually visualized as the original actor so when someone that looks different plays the role it doesn’t feel the same.

What they should have done is kept the same cast but here is where it changes the story is now focused on rodricks kid as rodrick is now the father of his family. To make it even more relatable it shows rodrick has matured and now shares very similar themes that rodrick resembles his father more instead of a cool big brother to show he has grown up the fans would have loved it because it feels like the show grew up with them so it becomes even more relatable.

The casting director owes him an apology for casting him as someone who looks nothing like the son of the people they cast as the parents... but HE also agreed to audition for the role. If he already knew who the parents were going to be played by, he shouldn't have auditioned for that part. I still say DEI had a large hand in his being cast. They wanted someone "close to white, but a person of color" to fill the EGC score so the movie could get all that sweet Blackrock/Vanguard money. Had he been cast into a totally different film with Asian parents, and he the child of those parents, girls would have been swooning over him. The only reason he failed was due to a) him being cast as the replacement of a beloved character while looking nothing like the original and b) he simply did not fit in with the rest of his "family" on the show.

I believe in a certain human psychology where most people will become the thing that you treat them as. If you treat someone (especially unjustly) like a villain they will eventually become the villain. I think if everyone treats you like a villain while you're trying to be a hero, eventually they realize they're doing all the work and yield none of the benefit. So why not just become the villain? at least then you'll be getting the benefits of being a villain. I respect this actor because he seems to have overcome that.
@djangodjango56946 сағат бұрын
The good thing about this whole "drama" is that we can use this as an example when an actor is cast totally different (usually another race) from the source material and anyone that has ANY criticism towards the casting is immediately called a racist. People are just complaining that he looks weird now, I didn't even notice the japanese part until he said it

It really was terrible. The newer movies were just terrible and he took the brunt of the hate for destroying a loved series of fillms that had heavy nostalgia tied to them. Not that it was his fault.

As a wannabe voice actor/ actor myself writing and direction for actors can affect performances as well as casting teams for casting actors like miscasting. But death threats and bullying is never necessary. I wish we could stop being so harsh on the internet. I swear the internet was not this bad and rude in the early 2000s.

I remember when Super Mario Wonder came out. Some people were up in arms that it wasn’t Charles Martinet, even though Kevin Afghani did an awesome job and held the nostalgia strong. It honestly didn’t take me out of the moment at all.
