Matty looks at how cornerback Devon Witherspoon played in his debut for the Seahawks at the Detroit Lions. Spoiler: Seattle has got themselves a very talented cover guy on the left side.

Great stuff again. May have been my audio, but you did sound a bit scratchy when you were playing around with the video. What would you look from him going forward to show he's learning NFL vs. college football? I was thinking about that comeback route on the offside that was completed for about 15 yards and you mentioned those are routes he didn't see.
@MattyFBrown
@MattyFBrown 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I need to really figure that audio issue out. My apologies for that. It’s really just adapting to that kind of NFL world, timing of concepts etc. And then press coverage (raw college technique but good traits), proving his ability to be around the ball still with NFL hashmarks, maybe nickel opps

Great stuff! I (think) I want a Julian Love/ Diggs breakdown. I want them to be good, but Diggs seems a step slower, Love seems slow, and with Wagner, I worry that teams with elite QB play will be able to expose the middle like the Rams did.

Great stuff as usual thanks Matty! Very happy after watching this breakdown of how good Spoon looks. I know dbs vary their techniques, so you think he will be able to jam against big strong receivers because he’s on the smaller side? He does seem very physical for his size. I know he played off a bit in college but he does look good in press. Thanks again!
@MattyFBrown
@MattyFBrown 9 ай бұрын
Thank you Derek! He’s going to be a soft shoe guy first and foremost with a quick jam as his change up. Then maybe a complete switch up of using a read step. It looked good to me, for his first NFL game. College was him kinda vibing in press technique, so he’s moldable here. And the physicality is there, as you say.

It is really nice to see a corner that can play with aggression and make plays on the ball on difficult routes to cover. I don't know if we have ever had a corner this versatile. No disrespect to our past great corners but this is a guy that can play any type of coverage and is not just a cover 3 corner. I do see why Seattle would want to move him inside on occasion and get their 3 best corners on the field in Brown, Woolen and Witherspoon. Cool stuff.

If woolen, brown, and spoon are available are those the 3 in nickel? I know Bryant’s been playing (when healthy) but just wondering if his tackling will improve. Would you do a special teams analysis like myers or reed if his coverage is really good again? Thanks matty for the great Seahawks coverage.
@MattyFBrown
@MattyFBrown 9 ай бұрын
So the thing with nickel is it requires a lot of run fit knowledge and kinda SS/LB awareness. So it’s more suited to a Jamal Adams type than an outside corner like Brown. You could definitely see Spoon play nickel (given his learning this offseason there) with Brown outside. Really, it depends on matchups and why a team is playing the personnel they have on the field. Always open to special teams analysis. Probably need more than one play

solid. That's what I saw too, really liked the way he was moving out there. The only play I didnt like was when he came inside to help/make a run stop and kind if collided with the thick thighed RB and got sat back onto his ass awkwardly.... that wasnt great and he shouldnt be just smashing in there willy nilly against these beast mode type RBs. I like it when he snatches ankles or drives on shins, or loops around and lasso tackles or whatever, or goes high and hits face to face with good leverage. For comps I like the way Jaire Alexander plays, many similarities but yeah DW has some next level attributes beyond that and already showing an ease and natural ability to move around smoothly out there, as well as (seemingly) a coach's understanding and attention to technique

If Witherspoon can continue to learn on the fly, Seattle should have 2 “Lockdown Corner’s!” Riq on the right side & Witherspoon onnn the left side! Even during the LOB days, they didn’t have 2 lockdown CB’s, period! Having 2 lockdowns at the CB position will obviously help in the pass coverage, but it should also help with the pass rush! Because the QB will have no place to go with the ball. It’s called a “coverage sack!” Through 2 games, Seattle is holding its opponents rush attack to 2.8 yards per carry. Bobby ranks #1 vs the rush according to PFF! As a team, Seattle is 3rd in the NFL through 2 games! Now, hopefully Jamal plays some vs Carolina…And then be a full go vs the Giant’s! If Seattle handles their business they should enter the bye week @3-1! 2 very winnable games as long as they play smart, and don’t underestimate any team’s ability to get the W. It’s called any given Sunday for a reason! After the bye week, and we don’t get any significant injuries in the next two games? Seattle should get back at least one starting tackle back in Cross. Lucas shouldn’t be far behind! We’ve got to improve on our rushing ability! And we’ve got to improve our pass rush! As long as we improve week after week and are firing on all cylinders when the playoffs begin, Seattle could make a deep playoff run! IMO, we still need 1-2 big hogs for help on the interior defense! We’re too thin depth wise…C’mon John, make another great mid season trade yeah! Great win on the road against a very good team in Detroit! #GoHawks

Given the players we’ve got on defense, do you think Seattle should go back to a 3-4? I heard last year Jamal was supposed to be a huge part of the defense! But unfortunately he got hurt in the 1st quarter and was done for the rest the season and hasn’t played since! Hopefully he gets some snaps vs Carolina…Then be a FULL GO vs the Giant’s! Jamal will definitely bring that juice! Same with Spoon! Seattle should have “rich people’s problems” in their secondary! Diggs, Love & The Prez. Jamal should definitely help him the rush and provide some sacks (several) playing in the box, making the opposing QB scared! Lastly, Seattle has NEVER had 2 lockdown CB’s…Even during the LOB days, they never had 2 lockdown CB’s. Riq on the right side (Everyone knows that he should’ve won DROY!) Same with K-9 on offense! But the biased east coast media picked 2 players from the Jets…How does Seattle win the award for having the best ‘23 draft class, yet no player wins OROY or DROY…? As long as Seattle handles its business, we should be 3-1 going into the bye week, as long as we don’t get any more injuries, Seattle should get back 1 of their starting tackles back in Cross! With Lucas not far behind…Once we get our starting tackles back, it should definitely help with our rushing attack! We’ve got a 3 headed monster at the RB position…Once McIntosh comes back. However, with K-9 & Charbonnet that’s a nasty combination! K-9 with his blazing, home run speed! And Charbonnet as that power back, and he can catch passes out of the back field! Our 3 tight end sets, are almost impossible to stop…Eat @Geno’s can carve up any defense! We’ve proven early that we can consistently stop the run, all we need now is a persistent pass rush/rushers! We need to blitz more! Blitz Bwagz more, like LA did last year! When he had a career high 6 sacks…Combine that with Jamal in the box, making opposing QB’s think twice about throwing the ball because our 2 CB’s are locking down their receivers!

Nice work! It's Witherspoon, Spoon is lame imo haha. The PI he definitely held, the receiver turns out immediately on contact and didn't push Witherspoon back, if he did I think the ref holds the flag, Witherspoon reached for that grab...he fixed it on the 2nd occurrence with the chest bump and arm flail.
