How did Eminem get his name? Eminem actually has several names he goes by, his legal name is Marshall Mathers but his explanation for changing his name to Eminem is pretty simple and actually makes a ton of sense. Some fans who have listened to Eminem their whole lives didn’t realize just how obvious the origin of his name was. When Eminem first started rapping, his stage name was just his initials, M&M. Say the initials out loud and you’ll hear the name Eminem. Later he started spelling the name as Eminem and liked how unique it looked written out. Eminem treats the name as his alter ego so he could say things on stage he would never say in real life. But that’s not Eminem’s only name, he also goes by Slim Shady and the story behind that name is more unusual. Eminem said whenever he sits on the toilet, really good rhymes pop into his head. He came up with Slim Shady because he got bullied for being skinny as a kid. He then added shady at the end to represent his dark side.

Also, the idea for Slim Shady came from the Group D12 (Dirty Dozen), where he raps in too. The original plan was to get the twelve best rappers in Detroit, but they only had six in the end. So Proof, who was also a member of D12, had the idea, that every member gets an additional Alter Ego, so the name “Dirty Dozen” makes (more) sense. This ended up in Slim Shady.
