Great interview. My first serious mountain bike was a 1998 Alibi, which I still have and just got repainted. Got a A Mojo HD5 and a Hakkalugi now too. Just need a road bike and I’ll have a full Ibis quiver :)

Love the ad at 4:00! That's a VERY forward design for then. Sloping top and short seat tube, 29.4mm seat post? Wow! And then the quote from Hank Barlow at the bottom of the ad! So cool. My VERY first mountain bike ride in Moab was with a friend who had the owners of Rim Tours and Hank Barlow take us on their "secret" version of Poison Spider Mesa. (It avoids most of the dreaded sand traps.) Anyway, at one point, we stop to rest in a nice slickrock bowl for some food & drink. When we start to head out, I wonder, "Where the heck are we going? Slickrock "walls" surrounded us with no obvious trail out. Hank just hopped on his bike and rode up one of the "walls." I was aghast in amazement. "Woah!" The Matt followed him up. So then I figured it's my turn and went for it - and cleaned it with pride and joy! I had been racing road, mountain and a little trials, so the technical challenge was right up my alley! THAT was my seminal Moab moment. Love at first sight. So lucky to have had such a special introduction to a magical place.

Thanks for taking me back down Memory Lane with this interview. Remember meeting Scott at eBike when John Castellano and I attended back in 1994...and later helping John pick up the first Sweet Spot full suspension bikes from the Ibis barn in Sebastopol a few months later. My all-time favorite mtb is the Ibis Ripley; although, I have now moved on to e-mtbs at this point of my life. Hoping there will be an e-Ripley at some point in time...

Very nice Scot, your MTB history is amazing, thank you. I was a late bloomer to MTB's (1991-ish). After being on a Ventana Marble Peak, and then Ventana Fuego and then going to the Ibis technology was, well, amazing and actually life changing for me... and that is still true today. Every time Ibis comes out with a new bike I am still overwhelmed with how well they ride. I believe at this point I have bought 3 Ibis bikes sight-unseen, just based on the specs and the knowledge that Ibis does things one way: The right/best way. Ibis has never let me down and have earned my loyalty and trust. Thank you for these fantastic fun machines that keeps us from growing old to quickly! :-)

Great interview! I grew up riding and racing Mt bikes in the 80's and 90's and feel so fortunate to have raced from full rigid to 8-10 inch downhill bikes in the late 90's. I had no idea Hans works for Ibis, he brought the first Santa Cruz full suspension bike (Tazmon) to the shop I worked at for us to test ride in 1994, super cool guy. I just bought my first Ibis (Mojo HD 5) and love it, also stoked to be on a bike thats built in Santa Cruz where I live...

It's been decades, Scot, but I rode a few rides with you in a group back in the "Snap" & "Major Tom" days around Occidental. I remember a ride when a guy with a Slingshot FS bike rode with us and at one point came sliding into our group when we were stopped for a hydration brake, and he had both front & rear tires locked and slid straight up and straight as an arrow for about 100 feet and stopped perfectly right next to us. ...just one odd memory. - I loved my Bridgestone MB-1 but to this day I regret never buying a Silk-Ti when they were available 😢 Thanks guys for the video. I enjoyed hearing history I didn't know.

I can still recall seeing the first carbon Mojo out on our local trail system. Im guessing around 2008. This gray headed elderly dude was out there just ripping on the thing. It looked like an Easter egg met some futuristic trail weapon. Thought my Titus Racer X was good but I was speechless after seeing the Mojo. There is no doubt in my mind that frame changed the industry forever.

I remember the 80s, when you would run into guys like Scott, Keith Bontrager, Joe Breeze, etc. at most races or festivals. Back when the Moab Fat Tire festival attracted a whopping 300 riders, or when we rode Crested Buttes Pearl Pass with these guys.

I had a pix of the hakka, he was curious about the tailfin.cc set up I had on the bike. Would luv to tour the mtb museum in Fairfax as well, regarding mtb history. I learned of the brand, mainly from Mt. Bike Oregon- where you can ride over three days, bikes costing more than the car you drove in. Mojo 3 beaut of a bike IMO.

You have to be crazy to buy a bike based on an interview. That being said, I test rode a Ripmo from the factory in Santa Cruz last January, fell in LOVE with it, hesitated to buy it, and they ran out of frames! (V1 that is) I ended up getting a Fezzari La Sal Peak for a 30 day trial and ended up sending it back because I couldn't get the Ripmo out of my mind. I have no doubt there are other bikes out there that would be great bikes (Yeti?) but I am going to get a Ripmo as soon as they are available because life is too short.

As someone who worked with CAD in the 90's and 00's I have to say that CAD was already sophisticated enough, and the hardware was already there. I think he may be exaggerating the effort or maybe they should have employed some experienced engineers? lol
