Lasker was word champion for 27 years and that is the longest reign of the chess history, but only if we consider the offical word championship title. Steinitz was officially only for 8 years word champion (1886-1894), but unofficially from 1866, when he defeted Anderssen, so he was the best player in the word for 28 years, even 1 years longer than Lasker!

Maybe Steinitz wasn’t in good health. But as Amos Burn humorously said, “I have never beaten a well player”.
@giriiyer39684 жыл бұрын
I believe it was tartakower who said that he had not defeated a player who was in good health at that time.
@skakdosmer4 жыл бұрын
@@giriiyer3968 I read in a book that it was Burn. So probably they both said it, but Amos Burn was older, so maybe he said it first? (But who cares?) There are also several players (Fischer and Lasker for example) who are quoted for saying that if you see a good move, you should look for a better one. Good quotes are often reused. As Albert Einstein said, the secret of being thought to be creative is not to reveal your sources.
@giriiyer39684 жыл бұрын
@@skakdosmer heh,heh.well said and the Einstein one was even better. Thks.if you say it is Burn,then I stand corrected. But I read somewhere attributing it to tartakower.

Steinitz struggled bravely, but his advanced age and the strong game of Lasker was to much for him.

I would never bet against a 34 year old against a 58 old in a chess world championship match. With that sad I still think Lasker is a greater champion than Steinitz and would have won even without the large agegap. But who would tell?
