How did people try to ‘cure’ the Plague? (Flagellants)

However, while some people tried to cure the plague by punishing others, some tried to cure it by punishing themselves.
This form of religious self-punishment was known as flagellation and it experienced a revival on a new scale because of the Black death.

One point to add: In medical manuscripts they did say that the boils could reach the size of an apple, however during this period apples were not as selectively grown or genetically engineered to be as large as they are today (maybe 3 /4 or 1/2 the size of today's largest apples). Not exactly as alarmist as it may seem today, as apples were much smaller during the Middle Ages.
