LOL! Before the Passenger Pigeon was hunted to extinction, pigeons in the USA were so numerous, they blocked out the sun for days migrating. Audubon witnessed a flock of pigeons 300 miles long and a mile wide that blocked out the sun for 3 days. They sounded like a constant roll of thunder and trees collapsed from the weight. Scientists are now considering cloning this bird, so it may happen again.

Still, pigeon population in cities needs to be controlled the way feral cats and dogs are because yes, pigeon droppings carry diseases we can catch, as well as ticks that can attach to humans, just because cases of infections are uncommon these days doesn’t mean they’re suddenly clean animals. As a pigeon fancier, let me mention that not only are pigeons exceptionally extraordinary creatures. They are resourceful. A pigeon can fly from one place to another without knowing where its going over Many miles back to there location. We call them homing pigeons and I know you were referring to a wild city pigeon, but domesticated pigeons are very smart and can be used for many things. One of the sports is racing ! They are like horses in the sky.😃

There is a really wonderful book called "Pigeons" by Andrew D. Blechman, and it is a really great read. If you liked this video, you'll really enjoy the book. It's got a lot of heart. Here's an excerpt from the description of the book: "To research this lively history of the humble pigeon, the author traveled across the United States and Europe to meet with pigeon fanciers and pigeon haters in a quest to find out how we came to misunderstand one of mankind’s most helpful and steadfast companions. Pigeons captures a Brooklyn man’s quest to win the Main Event (the pigeon world’s equivalent of the Kentucky Derby), as well as a convention dedicated to breeding the perfect bird. The author participates in a live pigeon shoot where entrants pay $150; he tracks down Mike Tyson, the nation’s most famous pigeon lover; he spends time with Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Pigeon Handler; and he sheds light on a radical “pro-pigeon underground” in New York City. In Pigeons, Andrew D. Blechman reveals for the first time the remarkable story behind this seemingly unremarkable bird."

Yeah I read that book and I liked the story of the messenger pigeon who broke a wing and ended up walking miles home. It was so adorable to imagine it hopping up curbs and crossing streets etc, and still knew where to go despite losing its ability to fly.

Pigeons, or Rock Doves, can’t poop unless they’re seated. They don’t poop on your head, but gulls do … I know that through experience. Pigeons carried messages in wars. Theres a famous one whose name I can’t recall. Sir David Attenborough told me that … not in person of course, and it’s in a museum. Rock Doves aren’t rats with wings. They’re beautiful birds with great “ radar”, lovely colours and they’re welcome in my yard any time, but they don’t like tree rats, aka squirrels. Respect the bird we once loved. 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
