Qatar has gone from being a poor country with a primitive economy to one of the richest in the world. It is no secret that much of their fortune has been the result of the large amount of Oil reserves that it boasts. The Black Gold liquid has provided the Qatari royal family an opportunity to modernise its realm, as well as exerting their influence on a global level. The immense amounts of money brought in by oil and gas has subsequently been used by the ruling Al-Thani family to establish more economically sustainable strategies that will serve Qatar in remaining a hub for commercial interest in the years to come.

Qatar is not considered as a big oil producer compared to the other neighbouring gulf states but to is gas. Qatar has the third largest gas reserve after Russia and Iran.

Good stuff. I am currently reading Heat by Sir Ranulph Fiennes who was serving as an officer in the 70s Oman army. He gives excellent brief insight into the history of Oman from Roman times, portugese Indian arrival to present day and the politics of the 70s regarding Trucial States , Qatar etc . Back in the day the area was notorious for piracy and slavery , which the british made illegal and resources traded that did not realise came from the region. The Gulf states , Oman , Yemen have a rich history which is definitely worth investigating

I appreciate the effort you made by making this video but you missed a lot of important stuff. One of the most important thing that you missed is though Qatar discovered Gas in 1970s they didn't use it until late 1990s and early 2000s, because unlike Oil, Gas at that time was not transported on ship but pipes, and Qatar didn't have close customers that wanted Gas. The major customers of Gas was in East Asia like Japan and Europe. So in order to sell to Europe Qatar wanted to build a pipe line through Saudi Arabia to Jordan, Syria, Turkey and connecting it to existing pipe lines in Europe but Saudi Arabia didn't allow Qatar to build this pipe line to it's territory. So out of options, when Hamad bin Khalifa took power in 1995 he thought of an ambitious plan of using liquidation method to turn gas to liquid and transport it thought ships. The problem with that is that this method is really expansive for both the seller and the buyer, because you need to build huge infrastructures in the sellers country and the buyer. This infrastructure in the seller country will turn gas to liquid put it in huge custom ships that going to transport it to the buyer's country and the buyers need to have infrastructure that will turn this liquid gas to gas again and use it for their needs. At that time in 1995 the country was bankrupt do to political reasons and relayed on pay to pay of the oil. He and his team came with a plan to save 90% of the oil profits at that time to build the infrastructure needed to use liquified gas method and found out that Japan is willing to build the infrastructure needed to buy liquified gas from Qatar, along with thousand of other problems and challenges they did it. Right now Qatar is the largest liquefied gas exporter and Japan, China and India are their larger customers. And that is what mostly made our country Qatar rich to day and oil is not that big in terms of profitability for us. Anyway I appreciate you making a video about us, thank you.

The thing is, these oil/gas rich Gulf Arab states have wise leaders that care about their people and thus spend money on their country, on the infrastructure, on education and on the health care system. They also provide benefit system to their people and spoil them rotten. Whilst on the other hand, the other neighbouring Arab countries have leaders that steal from their people and spend the absolute minimum they can get away with. Such contrast. Am I envious ???? lucky them.

They hired a lot of European companies to build most the stadiums, contractors and architects like KEO International Consultants, Foster& Partners, Fenwick-Iribarren Architects are the some of ones who were in charge of a lot of the projects and tried to do everything as cheaply as possible. So really you should be working on shutting down those companies who actually facilitated the hiring and use of slave labor, but you won't bc you're racist and only apply your set of rules to brown people. Just like how you don't do anything about the US prison system that makes like 11 billion dollars of goods and services every year. Also I don't see thousands of Indians queuing to pay thousands of dollars in bribes to go to US prisons like how they pay thousands of dollars in bribes to land the slave jobs in Qatar.

Just out of curiosity. With the development of Paleontology/Geology and stuff. Dating rocks around the world, and knowing what period was near the surface at what area of the world. Around what time period, did the Western nations already have a pretty good idea that there should be oil in certain parts of the middle east? I'm assuming this played some part in their foreign policy.

Great question - western geologists were essential in the exploration of the Middle East's potential for oil. To answer your question, it was in the first 3 decades of the 20th century. There were pivotal moments, mostly characterised by the discovery of oil in certain countries - Iran early 20th century; Bahrain 1932-ish, Saudi Arabia 1930s etc. Because of the proximity of these areas, I'm sure it gave geologists (foreign policy administrators) the motivation to explore neighbouring regions. In Qatar's case for instance, the discovery of oil in Bahrain was literally the/one of the most important reason behind why the British even started digging for oil in Qatar in the first place. Hope that somewhat answers your question.

In theory it should be highly possible, if they develop a long-term economic model that isn't reliant on oil. E.g. South Korea is far richer than North Korea, despite the latter having much more natural resources

I worked there for a few years, before their economic boom. This and the Construction required for the Football Tournament created a demand for Workers, especially labourers as Qatari’s wouldn’t do the manual work. So it sucked in low cost labour. These Workers applied for jobs which paid much more than they could earn in their own Countries. Yes I believe that conditions were poor, although possibly not worse from where they came from and safety not apparent as a concern - from top to bottom in the building of Stadiums. However, I do not believe the employment of these Workers could be termed as ‘Slavery’.

@@Ampasss Kafala is the method whereby Qatar, and Saudi Arabia for that matter, control foreign Workers during their Contractual time in the Country. It makes the sponsor company responsible for foreign employees, for behaviour and to ensure they leave the country when their Contract period is finished. Therefore, while it is restrictive (a worker can only change to another Company with the sponsor’s approval) it allows protection for Qatar, especially as it has a small population, from excessive number of foreigners. I think this is acceptable. A separate issue is ‘health and safety’ and this is what should be focussed on. I’m sure I am in agreement with you on this.
