In the Silmarillion, Morgoth commands an orc army exceeding hundreds of thousands. In The Lord of the Rings, the armies of Sauron and Saruman are also largely composed of orcs. So, what did these orcs, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, eat, and how did their masters manage to keep them fed even under a siege lasting 400 years?

So they could eat bread? Good to know. Who did they steal it from? In that situation and location, it seems unlikely that they were near their normal food sources. They knew the word for bread, at least. Heh the maggots might been the best part? I agree with this video. Orcs hardly seem like the type to patiently grow and protect grain crops for long enough?

I always assumed the orcs ate mould, fungus and moss, things that grow in the dark along with any creatures that dwell in caves (snakes, rats, bats etc)
@peterlynchchannel
@peterlynchchannel 2 ай бұрын
Fungus makes a lot of sense. Subterranean creatures like many species of ants and earthworms will bring plant matter underground so that fungus grows on it, and then eat the fungus. This would be a kind of underground agriculture that orcs could do on a large scale to feed a growing population. As for hunting cave dwelling animals, they could do that for a short while, but those animals would quickly be extirpated. Perhaps they could keep rats and pigs which are very good for converting biomass into meat.

Cannibalism almost for sure. Not just Grishnakh’s accusation; Shagrat tells Gorbag “You’ll be for the pot”. Not definitive but it shows orcs aren’t squeamish about cannibal talk. No doubt they’d eat their dead, even if they don’t slaughter their kind for food. And I can’t imagine Sauron/Morgoth/Saruman hesitating to kill ( or at least butcher already dead ) orcs to serve up to his boys. I always imagined that deep under Angband there were huge caverns where orc females grew food with artificial lighting and underground streams, and baked their hideous bread while males slaughtered “surplus baby” orcs for sandwich meat 😂

Thanks for the thought provoking video. I'm convinced of a third option for Angband: I don't think Melkor had a huge army until the latter days when he was going to break the siege. A small force can effectively hold a fortress against a large army besieging it. Orcs multiply quickly, therefore there would be no reason to have a large force in abeyance until Melkor was prepared.

I always suspected there were two types of orcs. Those that were made in a more natural form through breeding and those that were made unnaturally through sorcery. Similar to how Saruman (in the movies) spawned them in vats of mud and presumably other elements, bile blood other things. Perhaps even human blood. Similar to a crude magical form of cloning. Though other than a line remarked by Gandalf, assumably he was only using poetic speech when he says 'all the orcs spawned in Moria' the books and Tolkien himself never really mentions that as being the case. But it would explain their numbers and how Sauron and Saruman were able to quickly build armies of orcs including Uruks. I assume the more natural orcs that breed and live in tribes to be more independent thinking despite still being bound to the will of Sauron. While the magically spawned orcs are more loyal to their creator, as with Sarumans white hand uruks.

in one of his letters answering a question about the Entwifes Tolkien wrought: “They [the Entwives] survived only in the ‘agriculture’ transmitted to Men (and Hobbits),” Tolkien continues. “Some, of course, may have fled east, or even have become enslaved: tyrants even in such tales must have an economic and agricultural background to their soldiers and metal-workers.

Well considering the Orc Draughts as paralleling Lembas, it could make sense for their origin to be some sort of moss or fungus corrupted by Melchor to force to body to keep functioning. Though an important factor is that while Sauron was the sort of order obsessed planner who'd keep the scheduling of the slave plantations of Nurn working, Melchor was always more about the ideas with others being left to handle the details. So if some underling came up with a way to grow plants by reflecting the light of the simirals into garden caverns, Melchor probably wouldn't object too much if it got results.

Much like everything in LOTRs, the origin can be found in Anglo-Saxon history and folklore, as 'Orc', is the Old English word for demon. Of course, orcs, in this case, aren't what a Christians would consider a demon, as Christianity and Jehadism didn't exist at the time. Therefore, they aren't interchangeable, but if you think of Eru Ilúvatar, as God, Morgoth as Satan, it's makes sense to think of orcs as demons. In Tolkien's world, orcs and goblins are the same thing. The reason Tolkien changed the word from goblin to orc, is due to goblin being an Old French word, (gobelin) and not an Anglisc word (Old English). Old French doesn't fit with Tolkien's narrative of making a story using Anglo-Saxon folklore. What do demons eat? Morgoth transformed them into orcs, the same way he created dragons and balrogs, with evil, using his own power to do so. Therefore, I'd assume orcs, dragons, balrogs, etc, don't need to eat to survive, as they're surviving from the unnatural power Morgoth used to create them. They eat meat when they can find it and drink orc draft for energy. Smaug didn't leave Erebor for years, and he's huge. Which suggests, it's the same for all of Morgoth's creatures.
@middleearthtales
@middleearthtales 2 ай бұрын
quite a different approach. thank you for sharing. Although Melkor did not create the Balrogs, what you say applies to dragons as well. But at least Smaug must go out and feed himself with animals. Still it is an interesting thought that these creatures do not need to eat thanks to Melkor's dark power. The fact that Melkor lost his power as the centuries passed may also support this. But the fact that orcs reproduce even after Melkor is gone shows that they do this naturally? You have given me something new to think about
@creepingdread88
@creepingdread88 2 ай бұрын
@@middleearthtales Morgoth losing his power over time, due to creating/altering so many creatures, seems to suggest the orcs, dragons etc, are, in a sense, supernatural. Thinking of them in the same way we would a demon, might not be so different. It might be why they eat one another and why the elves and men burn their bodies. That leads to a great big rabbit hole, though, doesn't it? lol The orcs reproducing naturally, doesn't conflict with this, but they possibly became weaker over time, as they didn't gain any more power. Saruman, might have done something similar, but who knows if he was capable or even powerful enough to do something like that. Very true, he didn't create the balrogs, I don't know why I said that. Probably because I was thinking of Peter Jackson's balrog. lol He made the balrog look really cool, but at the same time, he made them seem like simple monsters, when they should have been more intelligent and humanoid looking. A fiery version, similar to how Galadriel looked when she imagined taking the ring, would have been more in keeping with the books. For people, such as yourself, who has a deeper interest in Tolkien's work, learning about Anglo-Saxon history and folklore, would be very useful. Smaug was taken from Beowulf, Beren having his hand bitten off, is taken from the Anglo-Saxon God of War, Tiw (whom we named Tuesday after). He also lost a hand to a wolf. Woden was known to walk Middle Earth (that too) as an old man, much like Gandalf, not to mention, the obvious, such as dragons, trolls, elves, dwarves etc. Anglo-Saxon history is incomplete, due to them not writing anything down. Tolkien, a professor of Anglo-Saxon, wrote LOTR in an attempt to fill in the holes and make a good story out of it. He was somewhat successful, the story is certainly great, but I think he failed trying to complete Anglo-Saxon folklore, as very few people are even aware that's what LOTR is about. What are your thoughts on this?

Orc comes from an old english loanword which 100% comes from latin orcus, which it *might* derive from etruscan, a pre-indoeruropean language, Orcus was an ancient chtonic deity, not a demon. It probably changed of meaning with the spreading of christianity when many pagan myths became folklore. Orchi/ogres are part of many if not most european folktales, and are not specifically anglosaxon, but predate them. Ogres are cannibal brutes with a human form. Orcs as intended by Tolkien are his own creation, inspired by the saga take on ogres. "Ogre" retained most of its original form in italian: orco. As for Tolkien's orcs being akin to demons it is incorrect, we have actual demons in LOTR lore: the maiar. Tolkien wanted to rework the origin of the orcs since the thought of orcs being presented as an inherently evil sentient people bothered him, now we only know they are Arda creatures twisted by Melkor. Orcs being tortured elves is not canon.

This video is next level. Great thought exercise. The only thing plausible I've heard is the "black liquid". All the other stuff proposed in the comments doesn't even work for 1000 troops. The problem of sustenance resource management is so critical and nuanced, that through the centuries, the best generals have always known: The best way to beat an army is to attack their headquarters and supply. Some of the most powerful armies in history have lost major campaigns due only to starvation. Some of the answers offered do not appreciate the fragility of this issue.

In the books, Saruman's army numbered 10,000 but was way more ramshackle than depicted in the movie. Said 10,000 consisted of Uruk Hai, Orcs, "half-orcs and goblin-men", and contingents of Dunlendings (Men of Dunland persuaded by Saruman due to their hatred of Rohan). It was only a skeleton force that was left in Isengard. Iirc, some 3 dozen men that didn't even put up much of a fight, though understandably so.

Angband was... on its surface, a fortress, nestled in a mountain. But from my readings of Tolkien's works, Angband's fortress was also deep, dark, and full of, "nameless things." These, "nameless things," sound intimidating, for sure, but if you've been born and raised in the dark, you will hunt in the dark. As other commentors mentioned, it could have been mushrooms, worms, insects, etc, all things that lurk in the dark. But, with Melkor, he *knew* of the nameless things. So, I think it is possible that those in Angband knew of those things as well, and hunted the least... problematic of those things. I, personally, think that's where they got their meat.

400 year siege: you must have a primary energy source that organisms at the bottom of the food chain feed on. That energy source does not need to be light. Presumably Melkor invented a form of underground agriculture based on geothermal energy. It is conceivable that he (and Sauron) had abundant food sources deep underground similar to the abundance of food at the bottom of the oceans where geothermal energy supports enormous fucundity and variety of lifeforms. side note: Melkor himself was a powerful source of energy. Much of his energy went directly into the earth itself, and he perhaps had ways of extracting his own energy from the earth to create food for his monsters. He also fed various monsters directly from his own energy (e.g. Carcharoth and Ungoliant)

Question. Can you speculate that all the Rings, if successful, would've been by Sauron to gather the forces under the control of the One Ring, to free Morgoth? To take on the Valar?

Although Angband was under siege it was, much like Mordor, never surrounded. The Silmarillion clearly talks about the humans, elves, dwarves etc that Morgoth (and later Sauron) and the orcs capture during raids etc........to use as slave labour. There was always food coming in and out and it's not like the Siege of Angband meant he Noldor were sitting on the door steps. In fact they were based quite a long distance away and the northern reaches, which we know as Arnor and the shire in later tales........were never blocked by siege at all. Angband was doing just fine.

Sauron's orcs objecting to Saruman's Uruks eating orc flesh means likely orcs aren't cannibalistic unless forced. Melkor: he twisted elves into orcs, he likely also twisted some plants that grows in the sun into plants that grows in the dark like fungus or mold, sprinkle a little magic and you get "orc draft" Sauron: he is not just feeding orcs, but Orcs AND men. but both Orcs and easterlings seems to have ways to sustain a population in their disorganized state, I presume Orcs were semi-nomadic beast herders while the easterlings were adept farmers, so Sauron can easily expand the operation by setting up "factory farms"/coollective farms(would fit right into his MO) that produce a large stockpile of grains(LOTR books does mention grains and then there is "maggoty bread"), fungus, and meat. and what he can't farm, he raids and trades. Saruman: Uruk Hai holds no reservation about eating Orc meat, but the lack of agriculture still concerns him, and likely Mordor is supplying them, but whatever he can't get, he go on raids. or even pretend to be nice and trades grains for wizard service with Rohan and Gondor

I assumed they had farms with longpig. Longpig will eat anything and even grow their own food, so they would be good livestock as long as the orcs weed out those that seem to smart.

I remember reading the orcs feeding the hobbits gray bread (which they ate) and some sort of meat (which they didn't). The implication was orcs were eating things even a hungry hobbit would pass up. Maybe the gray bread was the Mordor version of Lembas.

I belive that counting saurons orks should include the ones that were attacing erebor even tho theres close to zero information about them i would estimate that the army needs to be big enough to overrun the woodland elves and erebor to a point where they cant leave theyre foretresses to help in the war
