Sony is one of the companies I have the most respect for. They've contributed countless times to the electronics industry such as paving the way to personal audio through the Walkman. It's a shame to see that a company which was the market leader back in the 80s and 90s lost its way. I hope one day they can become like the Sony I knew from the old days

I think Sony is a very influential company as they were one of the first Japanese brands to be seen in the western world that Japan makes high quality products at an affordable price. American brands started to fail because of Japan's products at a lower price but also having that quality on par with American products. "Made In Japan"... Sony started plaguing the western world, along with many other Japanese brands such as JVC, Nintendo, Panasonic, Sharp, etc. And there Japanese products become the household products. Now if we look at today's products, there is the rise the of Chinese and Korean products, which has almost matched the quality of Japan. Japanese products have now been considered mostly "expensive and "overpriced" with consumers. Just like how American products were considered "expensive" when Japan ruled the market...
@li_tsz_fung7 жыл бұрын
I can't agree that the quality of Chinese and Korean products is almost matched the quality of Japan. Chinese company provide good enough technology for average consumers with a much lower price, but the quality is not always good. Korean products are quite good at some area such as screens/TV. They put so much effort on marketing while offering a lower price than Japanese companies. The technology is good and the quality is OK. Japanese companies are the real boss. Companies like Mitsubishi don't really care about the consumer market. They could earn so much from providing military solution to the Japanese government. And large business grade products like trains are nearly all using the motors from Mitsubishi. That's why they hardly have advertisement. Similar story for NEC.
@li_tsz_fung7 жыл бұрын
And many people think the technology advancement of Korean companies are similar or better than the Japanese companies. But I can't agree with that. Japanese companies are usually better and usually jerks. Low/Mid-end Consumer grade product are technologies from years before. Especially in the oversea market, expensive and old tech. But in the true ultimately high-end products. They are the best. You just need to pay so much and most likely can't buy it outside of Japan. Let's hope that they focus on oversea consumer more someday
@cyrusm83937 жыл бұрын
Yes I do agree with you that the Japanese still have better quality products, but only in the high-end. What I was saying was from a consumer market stand point. Sony used to rule the consumer market because of lower costs, when American products were a bit more expensive. But if you look today, you see more Korean and Chinese products and you know why? Because of lower costs.They're starting to become the household products that Sony and others have once claimed. That's the reason why you don't see a lot of Japanese products anymore. Many Japanese companies struggled with the competition, so they stayed local, backing out from other markets. Now, they focus on the high-end market. Yes, there are still some popular Japanese consumer products like the PlayStation and Toyota, but that's another topic... Smartphones are a great example of this. When was the last time you saw a Sony Xperia or a Sharp Auquos besides Japan? I'm pretty sure you see more Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, or iPhone (this is an exception). Anyway, all I am just saying is that consumer products change frequently, and Japan is no longer a big player in the consumer market...
@cyrusm83937 жыл бұрын
Btw, I actually prefer Japanese products (also American!) to Chinese and Korean. I think it's good that Japan is in the hi-end market. :) I hope they don't stop making products...
@li_tsz_fung7 жыл бұрын
It's really sad to see them focus less on the consumer market. I used to love Japanese smartphone so much. Great design, Great camera. But now NEC and Panasonic quit the smartphone market. Sharp is sold to Taiwanese and I don't see the great design anymore. Sony dominates the mobile camera sensor market but not making smartphone with best camera. -------Long story below----- I own a old Panasonic smartphone (P-02E, 2013). It looks really unique but my 10 year-old brother locked it with his password and then forgot the password. Last week I bring it to Japan and see if docomo (the telecom who sold it) could fix that for me. But they didn't do that because I have no contact of their service (even if I'm willing to pay). Neither smartphone fixing stores nor me could reset the phone because docomo have password in recovery mode. One smartphone fixing stores told me they could fix it if I pay 11,800yen (~105usd) a motherboard replacement.

Another correction needs to be made. Sony's N.American partner, Gendis, was actually Canadian, based in Winnipeg, MB. Gendis was a marketing company, founded in the 1940s, by the Cohen brothers, and was known for retail chains SAAN Stores, Metropolitan, Red Apple, and The Sony Store. The Sony/Gendis partnership became Sony Canada, Ltd. Today, Gendis concentrates on property management, pipelines, and energy, after selling out its retail ventures and Sony partnership. Canada actually had access to Sony products before they launched in the US.

I didn't know the name "Sony" had something to do with the word 'sound', and I always felt that the analog age (which could also be said the age of sound) belonged to Sony. It's really unfortunate that this trend didn't continue in the modern digital age though. Happy to watch this, and im glad they continue to strife in innovating, just that most dont get unto ads to bolster their efforts in the market. For course the age we're in is extremely competitive and difficult to please, hence sony's decline and closure of respective departments. I enjoyed the video, my complaint and or dislike about this is that you put it into parts, I definitely would enjoy it more if it was a full video.

+mdjey2 That's actually been on my mind. Both the Roland 303 and 808 have incredible back stories. Perhaps look out for something in the coming months ;)

at the time of watching this video there were 9510 likes and 74 dislikes. this must be the biggest difference by far for an infotainment video. truly reflects a high quality piece of work. thanks again ColdFusion for another informative video on another popular brand :)

Thank you for these 2 videos on the history of Sony. They were definitely an education. A request: Please maintain a proper aspect ratio regardless of source material. Mixing aspect ratios is particularly troublesome, since it prevents aspect correction during playback.

I hope Sony stops taking the L and starts releasing revolutionary products one again...

Jarl Ballin' Sony has the best Mirrorless cameras around today. They are beating Canon and Nikon which are also from Japan ;). Sony Camera lens and Camcorder starting from 100 Dollars till 50000 dollars. There are also million of reviews on youtube with millions of views on Sony Cameras. Sony is still big today!
@Jarl_697 жыл бұрын
They are still big, but they have been taking an L since 2008 and they aren't market leaders in much anymore. Olympus and Panasonic are beating Sony at Mirrorless Cameras, Samsung is beating Sony in phones, LG is beating sony in TVs, Sony sold its laptop division... idk
@worldtech3457 жыл бұрын
Jarl Ballin' Olympus and Panasonic is cheaper but not better cameras. Sony Revolutionized mirrorless camera by creating full frame mirrorless cameras (Full frame Sensor was only available on Dslr before) while olympus and panasonic are trying to compete on apsc level cameras. Sony Full frame Alpha 7 is now competing with Canon 1dx and and Nikon D4 and winning because of its smaller size.

Jarl Ballin' 1. Olympus and Panasonic offers cheaper products, but cheaper doesn't always mean better. Sony's mirrorless cameras are far better than standard APSC DSLRs from the two companies. 2. Samsung is winning of what? Sales? Advertisements? Samsung even had to recall the Note 7 twice and still not solved the problem it faced through, and according to Apteligent, the XZ is the top selling flagship phone of Q4 2016 after the Note 7's demise. 3. Sony joined the OLED team this year, and due to better display processing of their TVs, LG is going to fall behind, and they will likely just go to earn money from selling OLED panels to Sony and not winning with their own. As CLEDIS gets to the mass, OLED will be extinct and LG will be the biggest loser in the game since they only focus on OLED which will then be useless in the next 2-3 years as CLEDIS takes over of the two worlds (LEDs and OLEDs). 4. That was way long ago, and even Samsung can't make any competitive laptops to the mass. Asus, Lenovo, Acer, Dell, HP, etc. are all making laptops better than Samsung themselves, and Samsung laptops weren't even that popular. And Sony's Vaio? Yes they were once leading the computer world as their Vaio laptops are even used by Hollywood actors in their movie projects. Remember the old days in 20s where Samsung and Apple weren't even a thing

You don't understand my point. I'm not saying Sony doesn't have competitive products, I'm saying that they aren't market leaders in anything like they used to be. I'm no fan of Samsung, but even after the Note7 disaster, they produced their most profitable quarter ever while Sony can't stop losing money on its mobile division...

I usually find Sony audio products ( stereo sets) headphones, speakers etc.too weak low range response to be any good to me. Clear vocals, but tinny and hollow sounding. The only exception was a 700 watt xplod subwoofer that I had in my car, that thing hit hard!

If you have an Apple phone, Samsung, or the new Google Pixel, your phone has a camera that's made by Sony. If you watch TV or movies, chances are that at least quarter of what you've seen is/was made by Sony. If you listen to music, chances are even higher. There so many other things that are indirectly made or influenced by Sony but we'll leave that for ColdFusion to inform you :)
