Microsoft has become one of the largest and well known companies on the planet, but how did they start, what's their story and just how big are they today? In this video we'll take a look.

Garry Kildall story: • The Man Who COULD Have...
Correction, it was a mistake to refer to the PDP-8 and those other computers in the 1960s as "microcomputers", these were mini-computers.
Microcomputers were only possible after Intel's introduction of the CPU in 1973. Sorry about that.

You got that right. I know there's way more, but when I think of Steve the first thing I think is Windows 8. It seems like the guy didn't give a damn about what the users, you know, the CUSTOMERS wanted, he had his own agenda and people just better get used to it. And that "developers developers developers" thing, while dropping VB 6 like a hot potato and pulling the rug out from under developers with their shifting standards. At least they're finally getting it right now and coming out with great developer tools again.

I remember that event. I think it was a good example of how skilled the two CEOs were, putting behind a legendary rivalry to better their businesses. Apple needed the cash and to move beyond that feud and MS wanted to dominate the school and business market and make sure they had a competitor around so regulators didn’t go after monopoly accusations again. No matter what you think of Steve Jobs, when it came to his return at Apple it was amazing. They went from weeks away from Bankruptcy to a completely vertical trajectory that would eventually climb all the way to battling for the biggest public company in the world.

It's not true, Steve Balmer is not popular as Bill or Satya, but he did open the Enterprise Market for the Microsoft, which brings a lot of profit for the company. How many times did you get the error message on Win95 "Keyboard not found, press F1 to continue" ? xD Back in 1997 and 1998 I remember seeing this and thinking "Well if you can't find it what am I supposed to press?" Back then you could not unplug and plug the keyboard (without risk of damages ofc).. That was my favorite "feature" of Win95 when I was a little kid... *Microsoft is huge.* Their best move was to accept the Open Source idea. The converted to the device + software as a service or subscription. Selling expensive software on CDs is a bit harder today. Software as a service or subscription is a lot more simple, when all the upgrades happen on the server, and the use has no need to do anything for the upgrade or security. Let's hope Microsoft will respect and honor their commitment to the Open Source model and competing projects. Android apps would make Microsoft even better, if they had some innovation in that.

Lol "gave up". Sociopaths like "Kill" Bill Gates never "give up" anything. You are being special kind of naive if you believe that by moving his assets from his own personal account to tax-exempt "charity foundation" whose sole purpose is to further his other business interests and investments is "giving up."

Love for Microsoft from India. Microsoft is my all time favorite. The video makes goosebumps to me about Microsoft and Bill Gates achievement. Today people are more happy to criticize Microsoft as they fell in love with Android and Apple. I still picture a day comes when Microsoft took over the world on Mobile platform as well. But it's really hard for Microsoft to achieve that.

You said something about Nadellas effect should not be overestimated because the products were already around, or whatever. To the contrary I think Nadellas effect was immense. Culturally he changed Microsoft in a lot of ways, like it's relation to open source. This has been an absolute essential part of their rise the last few years.

14:15 "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" Contrary to popular belief, this phase does not contain every letter of the alphabet, with the notable missing letter being "s" A much shorter (and cooler sounding) alternative which actually does contain every letter would be "Sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow"
