The fact this team is so badly handled that it led their *TV play by play guy* Jason Benetti, a talented broadcaster, to leave for a division rival, in large part due to Reinsdorf being the egotist he is, shows just how far they fell so fast.

Life long White Sox fan here: the main reason why it fell apart is because the owner Jerry Reinsdorf. He's cheap and doesn't like to take risks, Benintendi is the highest White Sox contract in team history at $75 mil. They didn't offer Bryce Harper enough, Machado etc. The rebuild started with the tear down and the restructuring was good, but it was KILLED by never signing a big name free agent vet to bring it all together, a superstar if you will, AND the firing of Ricky Renteria in 2020 for TLR. The team was built and brought up with Renteria at the helm. Not necessarily for him, but he was essentially the dad for these guys. Then bam Grandpa comes in to replace him and the vibe changes. How that 2021 team excelled at all is proof that there was talent there. With the right motivation, leader and environment, that '21 team could've been better and this video wouldn't exist. ...btw great video jolly felt good to watch something that wasn't 100% making fun of them

The Benintendi signing (on paper) made sense. The White Sox let Abreu walk because they already had too many 1B/DH types (Vaughn, Sheets, Burger, Jimenez). Signing Benintendi allowed the White Sox to move Vaughn (atrocious OFer) to 1B, where he'd presumably be a bit better or at least equal to Abreu defensively, and leaving the DH spot open for Eloy (which would hopefully keep him healthier). The White Sox upgraded two positions defensively. They probably should have been more wary of Benintendi's power decline in 2022, but it kinda made sense. I was never really fully in on the White Sox core. I didn't think Cease or Giolito would ever develop into SPs at the time they were acquired. Offensively, almost all of the hitters they were developing were strict corner guys (Jimenez, Vaughn, Burger, Sheets, and to a lesser extent Moncada). Jimenez and Vaughn both had lowish walk rates, highish K rates, and really poor defense. There were no up the middle prospects except for Robert, who also had a really scary K:BB ratio. It just didn't feel like a team that was going to be assembled correctly, especially with ownership being unwilling to spend and management not being the savviest traders. They only spent on mid-range vets who were already on the older side (Grandal, Lynn, Keuchel, Graveman, Kelly, and I guess you could kinda put Hendriks in this category too). Those players all broke down over the lifetime of their contracts and ownership/management wasn't able/willing to do enough to replace them. Hahn/Williams/Getz are all about 20 years behind the times. Even the '05 White Sox were a very "old-school" team and Hahn/Williams tried to recreate that lightning in a bottle until they got fired. They refused to compensate for flaws in players that even casual fans of today could recognize. They didn't account for the aging curves of players in the post-steroid era. They didn't account for guys like Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada, and Andrew Benintendi only being useful players if they could consistently run an unsustainable BABIP. They failed to dumpster dive for players with useful traits who could be acquired for cheap and instead gave out big-ish contracts to relievers and put veterans like Elvis Andrus in the starting lineup. (I actually think the inability to find useful depth pieces to cover for the injuries that any team is going to experience was the main source of failure in this contention window. The White Sox started a lot of hopelessly bad players in the last couple years). They rightfully got rid of Hahn and Williams and replaced them with a guy who's only goal is to make the White Sox a retirement home for former Royals players/staff. I genuinely think they've been the most incompetently run team in baseball for at least the past 10 years

See the interesting thing is that despite the risks our core had, that isn't anything new to rebuilding teams, the Orioles had the opposite issue where only Henderson and Rutschman were core center of the field players but had little to no corner guys, yet.... because their players have been healthy....they e managed to field a good team. They also are a small market team and have filled the rest of their lineup with solid guys that aren't great but good enough. The Sox had question marks on all their guys BUT a few question marks on a decently built team is MORE THAN ENOUGH to get an idea of how good you'll be. So why are we somehow WORSE than the A's? Injuries, none of our core guys have been on the field long enough to develop properly. Losing a stud or two in a year hurts a team but the other studs can step on to fill the morale and gaps....but the issue is almost ALL OF OUR studs have gone down at various times and the rest of the team cant possibly pick up the slack. And even when our studs come back from the IL A lot of times they need to work their way back to full strength and get their habits back. But just as they're doing that they either get injured again or another guy goes down. This has been the main problem with us since 2020. Tony larussa didn't help, So yes, he too is a major part of why we declined, But nonetheless, the catalyst has always been injuries

As a Sox fan who remembers all of this vividly I watched the whole thing anyway because I'm a masochist. Great stuff Jolly! Also this is a minor thing but it's a common theme in some of your work, sometimes you need to double check the pronunciation of player names lol it's Le-NEEN Sosa not LEN-in, BEN-it Sousa not Bin-ETT, and Kyle Stowers rhymes with Flowers, not Mowers. I hate to be that guy but it is important to get that right! I believe every team has a "Pronunciation Guide" page under the "Roster" tab on their official website with audio clips of every player saying their name which I find very helpful. Again just a minor critique though, I love your videos!

LOOOOONG time Sox fan here. Just came across this video after the ‘24 season….. Losing season doesn’t even begin to describe what the hell happened to this team… 3 wins in July. 4 wins in August. They won more games in the final week of the season than they did those 2 months. Winning 5 of their last 6 games was the highlight of their season. A season that had no highlights aside from Andrew Benintendi playing the way we thought he would play when he was signed. This was atrocious, and that word doesn’t even seem suffice. “Worst team in the history of modern baseball” is a title that Jerry gets to wear for the remainder of his time as an owner. We are stuck with the 3rd worst owner in baseball, behind the A’s owner and the Pirate’s owner, who cut a player 4 at bats away from a $200,000 bonus just so he didn’t have to pay it. Unfortunately, this guy is clueless and thinks he knows everything and is the smartest guy in the room when he has ZERO baseball smarts. He lucked into the ONE WS Championship he has. That season had nothing to do with Jerry. The game passed him by LONG ago. Hiring Tony LaRussa was the beginning of the end for this team. Not allowing Rick Hahn to go out and get the guy he wanted to lead this team was absolutely the reason this team fell flat when it mattered most. How can you get motivated when your “leader” is falling asleep in the dugout and taking strategic advice from the fans? Jerry needs to get TLR out of his ear and let someone else take over the club. Give us an owner who is worried about putting the best product on the field day in and day out, while spending big money when necessary. Being in the nation’s 3rd largest media market and being one of only 3 teams never to dole out a $100m contract is unacceptable in 2024. Sorry for the rant. Just truly not looking forward to the upcoming years of White Sox baseball, or whatever that was we just watched. Get ready, Sox fans, for a decade where “mired in mediocrity” would be a fu&%^ng gift.

White Sox fan here- I clearly remember watching all those 2022 games you discussed in the video. Was even there when La Russa walked Trea Turner. I think there’s three big mistakes that led to the downfall. 1) hiring of La Russa 2) huge contracts given to rookies like Jimenez, Robert, and moncada and 3) the off-season moves between 2022 and 2023. The rebuild was never finished. They never got a superstar or made serious moves for veteran leadership and proven talent. How is Andrew Benintendi’s contract the biggest in Sox history? I guess it really boils down to ownership. Reinsdorf kept Hahn and Williams for so long then hired Chris Getz from within the organization. He was head of player development. WHAT PLAYERS OUTSIDE OF PITCHERS HAVE WE ACTUALLY DEVELOPED? His laziness and cheap mindset will prevent this team from taking off. People will say injuries and bad luck- and those do play a part in this. But good teams have depth. There are players and pieces who can cover for injuries. Jimenez and Moncada, our “stars” who have repeatedly injured themselves, have rarely seen playing time. There’s so much anger in Chicago about this team. Believe it or not, white Sox fans are huge baseball fans and Chicago is a good baseball town. It’s sad and who would want to play here now? Fans came in droves in 2021 and 2022, even the first months of 2023. It’s heartbreaking.

Everyone wants to blame ownership because that's the easy way out, which is partially true, but the bigger issue has and always has been injuries. We couldn't keep our stars healthy long enough to build momentum and or morale. There were a ton of articles about how teams were interested because of his high strikeout rate and hoping the home runs were a fluke. It was dumb, he sucked. Just cause you don't get strikeouts doesn't mean you're good and just cause you're getting a ton of strikeouts doesn't mean you're not bad. He was was worse than bad, awful with the White Sox and was about league average for the Dodgers with too many bombs. If this was 10 years ago he doesn't get traded.

But at least the gram system is completely revitalized and there is finally hope once again. Just hope they actually spend money to supplement that

Before even watching the video as a White Sox fan I know the answer. Pitching it's pitching 2020 short season they lost to the A's (Yes they were good then)because of lack of pitching as in a game 3 (If I remember correctly Dane Dunning threw 1 inning then Garrett Crochet was injured and left them scrambling) 2021 made it to the playoff's facing the Astros problem starters The Astros ate up Lance Lynn, then both Giolito and Cease started strong in the first but then pitched scared after that getting ahead but then would walk guys after starting the count 0-2/1-2 trying to get the Astros to chase junk and they did not. Inexperience not having the confidence to the kryptonite. 2022 Off field problems carried onto the field for T.A. 2023 I believe they had something like 49 blown leads so yeah and the pen had a near 5 era. 2024 just tears (Edit was wrong year typo) Now to watch the video!

The TRADE that 100% wrecked all of it in 2021,,,Nick Magridgal for Kimbrel. They had it man,,and bringing kimbrel with an already great rhythm bullpen, messed the momentum, the cohesiveness they had which is so frck'n crucial and underestimated,,,followed by losing a sparkplug in nick was perfect in a high powered lineup. I knew it right away!! Said something at work the next day and most laughed,,, well it turned out true, just self destructed their chance that year and the rest is history. They flew to close to the sun , tried to finesse and fine tune a great team. I was so ticked.. it took a while to get over the tatis jr. Trade now this ,,, kamikazi'd their season, and future. ... they had a fun team that year,, what ashame and i wished i was prooven wrong. . . Will have a looooong rebuilding procesq,, will lose alot of fans and i could see them moving team unfortunately.

They had a bunch of players who could hit really well who couldn’t field and were way too injury prone. A bunch of DHs isn’t going to help you win in the long term. Their roster construction was terrible even when they won in 2021

He intentionally walked Corey Seager with the bases loaded when they were losing. His favor of tradition over his guys played a part in sapping all the momentum out of Mercedes' career. It was a bad hire and they had this good season in spite of him and not because of him. The AL Central has been a trash division for years anyway that almost never fields more than one good team, which suggests whoever wins it tends to have an inflated record.

The Chris Sale trade was probably one of their only good moves. They were a team trending downward, and they got a hug prospect haul for a guy with 2 years of control left. The prospects have somewhat panned out, and you can't really blame them for injuries/the organization's larger failures

1. Never spending the money to go all in and build around the young team (this resulted in trading key players like Dane Dunning and Nick Madrigal for decent players on cheaper contracts) 2. Hiring a dinosaur team manager 10+ years removed from the game because he was buddies with the owner when there were 3-4 rock solid candidates that never even got an interview 3. One of the worst conditioning staffs/injury luck I’ve seen in the entire history of any professional sports 4. Massive lack of success with more recent prospects… and then hiring the guy who was in charge of player development to be our new gm lmao That’s all I got. Being a White Sox fan these past couple years has been absolute BRUTAL and I don’t think anything will really change until the owner finally dies

I forgot How elite that staff was!! It's like looking at the 2019 Nats now... You're like " WTFF"?! Soto, Turner, Rendon ( cough cough) , Stras, Mad Max, Bryce, Reamealto, Werth, Bell, 2 other's im forgetting, Hudson ( who's starting to catch fire in LAD after sloppy start) etc. Besides Rendon probably, the Nats would be elite today. Tho Sox would still suck even if they had that rotation still. Lol

What Reinsdorf has done to the White Sox is absolutely criminal. So sick of these billionaire owners deliberately tanking their teams because the cities they play in don't want to foot the bill for a new stadium when the one the team currently plays in is less than 30-years old. It's absolutely despicable.
