How Did The Soviets Treat German Civilians in World War 2?

When the German army was pushed back to it's own original borders in World War 2, the German civilians were prepared for the worst. But somehow, it was even worse than anyone could possibly imagine. The biggest mass sexual assault and perhaps murder of civilians was opened up on the people of Germany and their suffering has mostly been forgotten by history. Let's discuss how the Soviet Union's troops treated the civilians of the German Reich during World War 2. We will discuss what happened to those that fled, those that stayed and those that tried to escape by sea, like those on board the biggest naval disaster of the 20th century, the Wilhelm Gustloff.

Many ask why the Germans fought up until the bitter end…this is exactly why
@WangMingGe
@WangMingGe 6 ай бұрын
It is why in Ukraine we fight so hard today (ignore the user name; I am Ukrainian but earn my living working for Chinese clients). Most folks I know who are ethnic Ukrainians do not care for our politicians; they have no interest in liberal globalism or any of that nonsense. But Russian rule...we know what that means. And they use the Buryats, Pechenegs, Matsi and other such troops today for the same reason they did in 1945....

I've heard from my great-grandfather that they were begged by polish women not to retreat or at least take their children with them. He told me that many jumped into wells, or threw their babies down there and slit their wrists afterwards. The fear of the soviet horde was mind-boggling. In the end he managed to rescue just over 30 civilians (german and polish) on his torpedoboat and bring them to Kiel. From there, he said that most of them continued to flee westwards.

@@ZoomerHistorian Not all of it was completely true, but cruelties like that or even worse actually happened probably in a thousand other places back then, so it was sort of true, from a certain point of view. Nemmersdorf was fake news though. There was a massacre, but it was only about 30 civilians in this case and all of them had probably been shot. There was apparently at least one case of R*, but Goebbels and his team altered and misrepresented the evidence for propaganda and made it look even worse than it was. They did the same with the bombing of Dresden, by the way. The official number of people actually killed was around 25k, which is already terrible enough, but not over 100k as it was claimed. The harder stuff about Nemmersdorf, like naked women nailed to barns, has never happened, at least not there. It was apparently from just rumours or imagination only after the war. If you thought this was already vile or barbaric, you should check out what alone a few hundred men of the Dirlewanger Brigade had done to ten thousands before. Ever heard of units like that? Just imagine that even the SS was disgusted by their cruelties.

As sickening as all of this is - what is sickening too is that post-war Germany did not remember and honour all these lost lives; the same goes for the millions of German soldiers. Whether they were Nazis or not, it should be normal to mourn our grandmothers and -fathers. This has never been encouraged in Germany, never has been spoken of at school. That's just not normal and it is a burden we Germans are still carrying although born much later. Actually we are unknowingly carrying a burden of unwept tears. While these events are abhorrent and it makes me sick they got off Scott free, we have to remember history doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Undoubtedly many soviet civilians suffered atrocities at the hands of the axis, anti partisan warfare was grim, it was common for a village to be torched and men executed and women sent to labour camps, so to some extent the rage of the soviet troops is understandable. If my wife and kids had been executed by the ss I’d have little remorse when the tables turned. However equally much of the axis violence was itself a response to years of soviet oppression and atrocities in Eastern Europe. Stalin’s regime killed millions way before the war even started, and the west backed that regime at a time when it had a kill count of around 10 million, and the axis kill count was in the thousands. What I’m trying to say is context is important but all things considered the soviets kinda had it coming, and the double standards also are ridiculous.

Russians were upset when they got to Germany. They saw the architecture and infrastructure and wondered: Why would a rich nation invade a nation that had nothing?

Becouse the nation that has nothing not only planed to invade as proof like rails for armored trains and 10 thousand tanks on the German border showed, but also commited crimes in Poland and Ukraine before the war with Germany.

It's because the Nazi regime wanted to expand their regional territory and population out towards Eastern Europe. But the Slavic, Polish, Baltic, etc people inhabited the lands. So they concluded that they needed to be wiped out entirely. The Soviets horrid actions described in this video were due to the Germans did they EXACT same things to their people.

@@SirMattomaton Not true. They had a non agression treaty. The Russians mobilized against the Germans forcing the German military leadership to order a preemptive strike. Russia planned to invade and break the alliance, this is well documented

The eastern and western fronts were two entirely different wars. In the course of the eastern front being total war, criminal and barbaric elements of the states were sent to war by both sides. The trail of massacre the soviets came across on the way to Germany did not help. The natural course of war reasserted itself over civilized war. In that sense, the main remarkable feature of WWII's eastern front was the fact that supposedly enlightened states devolved to barbarianism. On that note, the Polish lands... had some very nasty groups, many of which had just months before perpetrated the same kind of atrocities for the fascists. They had swappped sides to the soviets and were similarly eager to atrocity to try to please the soviets. It obviously did not work well since the soviets then just sent them off to the gulag.
