I find it strange that people who buy luxury get upset when they can’t get 100% of what they paid for their items. Most material things loose value once its out of the store. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ah yes, those getting lost on the second hand market. The crusty personality, entitled, overselling their wares, nonsense. Too many are new to the game, desperate to ‘hustle’ and don’t know the customer or what drives our market. We’re not fools love. I can buy brand new authentic designer online. Only Hermes quota bags are more valuable, sadly. I just want a filter & report button on resale sites to dismiss the uniformed lousy resellers. They make tasteless comments on ‘respectful’ when they are the one’s who don’t belong in that customer market, and don’t know the social norms of negotiating in various cultures.

I love mini bags, but spending more than say $150 sounds obscene. It's a cute accessory sure, but size wise, practically wise, it doesn't add up. I love my mini suitcase shaped purse from a craftsman on etsy, paid $80 plus shipping. Beautiful item, but I absolutely could not pay $3,000 for a similar size purse. Saw some gorgeous Chanel mini mini bags on resale sites in limited collection iridescent, but the price is a no for me.

Absolutely correct! Literally hundreds of websites and resale shops selling luxury bags. The exclusivity is completely artificial as you can find thousands of bags on the secondary market almost for what you would pay retail. Luxury is an illusion if everyone is paying for luxury goods but own no property, investments or cash and spending their income to just look rich. Maybe an idea for a new series....

people speculating to flip
@deborahcurtis1385
@deborahcurtis1385 Жыл бұрын
@@seabreeze4559 It's not so much buying to flip as the sudden change in the economic outlook and people's personal circumstances changing with that. There are a lot of wardrobe clear outs. There are so many lay-offs in the US and also in the UK. The fact that these preloved items are not selling, and are being heavily discounted is the market talking. Also it's getting less cool to wear exclusive branding. It makes interactions with people doing it tough, awkward. It also potentially sets you up as a target for theft. This lessens the opportunity to wear branded items. Unless you're going to an exclusive event, or something similar. It's different in some places, like Dubai or parts of Australia but overall the vibe is very muted unless you're young in which case you go for the novelty smaller bags and SLGs, Because being young and sheltered from reality is just some people's experience.

@user-zw8uc4rm1m Жыл бұрын
@@deborahcurtis1385 I'd say the reason it's less cool now is that its seen as tacky. If everyone and their mother has one, it's no longer cool or exclusive. Especially since trashy influencers all have designer and since the fake designer market can actually produce very decent fakes. If you're wearing a real LV, you'll walk past 4 others with the same bag or brand. And if you're not dressed a certain way, people might think yours is actually a fake.

I never looked at any of my bags as investments. I feel like I could sell them and get some money back, like you said, but they aren't investments. If I sell one, the money lost is like the rental price. If I buy something for $4K and sell it for $2K, then I've carried and enjoyed a luxury bag for half the cost. But since they do depreciate, I just keep them. If I'm in a pinch one day, I'll sell and not feel too too bad. It forces me to make better choices for sure! Love watching your videos!! Such a sensible and realistic reply idly baby. I have a similar approach. I try to get them at discount if possible. For instance I got a fendgraphy for £850 off! That gives plenty of wriggle room on resale but I never think to sell. If you didn't look at the underside, you wouldn't know it's been worn. I think this is because I don't stack mine with more than one bracelet or wear it every day and it's a snug fit so it doesn't slide around. It's so beautiful and I really love how subtle it is-unless you know Hermes, you don't know it's Hermes.

I’m good with owning my bags forever, or selling them at a deep discount years down the road, but I get your points, Sophie. They are certainly valid. I read up on the luxury watch market recently before purchasing one. The more expensive the watches, the longer they take to sell, because less people can afford them. Watch resellers don’t like to keep the ones loaded with diamonds and other expensive accoutrements in their inventory, because their money is tied up in something that sits there longer. Same with bags, I’d imagine.

I respect your knowledge about handbags. I just think the Classic Chanel handbag is a timeless bag and lovely for many reasons but so many people have them now they are no longer an interesting style choice. They are sooo well known now and sooo expensive now. It is the cost of the bag which is making the style statement rather than its heritage or functionality. I think the price increase has damaged the Chanel brand. I used to adore Chanel and now I have gone off the design house. I am really looking for other handbags by other designers.

I feel that your reasoning is sound. Personally, I would not buy a bag for the re-sale value. I am too nervous to sell anything! On the other hand, it is nice to have a cash source available. On the other hand though, when we have the next crash, if everyone is selling their Hermes Birkins all at once, the value even of the Birkins will drop and if enough people sell simultaneously, the value will drop catastrophically. There is no security in life, really. Only an illusion of it.

I owned a couple of LV slg that were in Vernis, epi, & empriente. Even a few Chanel slg that were in seasonal style. I sold them for reasonable prices that took into consideration their wear and tear and demand. I sold them quickly but when I looked at others selling the same item (preloved)for almost retail, they didn’t sell.

Great Post. 👍💜 Glad you mentioned Chanel RTW and not just bags. If you're patient, you can snap a real bargain on pre-loved market and very often the clothes which are listed as pre-loved are actually unworn as people kept them as collectors pieces. Recently, I found Chanel boots, also brand new for less than half the retail price.

Omg! I just said the same thing about the CF! The bag is 10k in USA new, to resell you won’t get even close to 10k from a consignment or selling on your own. To me the biggest issue as that since Chanel has not updated the design other than the Hardware, buying preloved will still be better. If you look at two CF with SHW in both good shape, you can’t tell one from the other. It also doesn’t benefit the resellers to sell over 10k bc then for sure they are crossing into Hermes resale prices. There was a article regarding Walt Disney and the CEO, he stated that they had to admit that they were a bit too aggressive with their pricing and it’s kind of backfired. They r planning to rectify the pricing errors by offsets in other areas. Chanel’s frequent increases and the % might backfire. Selling 1 bag at 10k as opposed to 2 bags at 5k might be good in the short but long term will lead to large inventory
@caligal
@caligal Жыл бұрын
I will not buy any Chanel bag as their price increase makes no sense to me. I also disagree what has been suggested that it is approaching Hemes pricing. Yes, on paper only. It is extremely rare to get offered a $10K Hermes bag without a shopping history. That shopping history sets you back by $10K/$15K/$20K. Just look at the underbite scarves, jewelry, blanket and you know what that has flooded the preloved market. In the preloved market a Birkin/Kelly purse in “very good” condition, which BTW is defined mostly by corner wear marks/scratches/discoloration, costs above $15K+. Pure madness for a visibly worn bag. A no name bag in that condition is usually donated to goodwill. A Hermes B/K bag in “excellent condition” is near $20K. So sadly, that Jumbo Chanel is still accessible at that price, even if undesirable. Hermes or Chanel better not fall out of favor and we better not buy them for investments.

I think there are also Chanel groupies and they tend to zone in on the 'hot' and 'rare' pieces and will have a completely different version of investment. This was good but when it comes to bags I feel that it’s only half the story. You have assumed that everyone is only going to buy luxury bags brand new. Of course if you buy a brand new Chanel or Dior bag and expect to sell it within a year and get your money back then you have a screw loose. I am old enough to have been watching the preloved market for many years and it has highs and lows just like the share market. Since July last year it has been in a low so now is the time to buy. Then if you want to sell your Chanel or Hermes bag, sit on it until the next high, and they always come around. You just need to be patient, do your research and be prepared to play the long game. I do think that buying a brand new Chanel flap bag at the current ludicrous prices, during a recession, is a bad move but it’s a great time to get a good bargain on a preloved one.

Sorry, maybe the concept is wrong. If you buy such luxury item, you buy it to wear it and not to sell it with profit😮. If you cannot afford it, don’t buy it. And what I read is that the newer Chanel bags and accessories are just not the same quality anymore (have no experience myself, though). I guess thats why they lose their value quicker. In line with what you explain for the Hermes bracelet. And those people who can afford chanel bag(s), they probably want a new one, not used.

Long term, as buying slows down with higher prices, resale prices will increase - it will take time though, the legacy of buying chanel classics at £3 or £4k is still too fresh and there are still too many around. Eventually we might even find the ridiculous situation where preloved is more expensive than buying new - especially if Chanel keep moving in a more exclusive direction.

Of things I bought at VC at least a half were real cr*p, although checked by their team: damaged, with spots, stinking of cigarettes. Especially Chanel Items. Were not worth the money at all.

I would luv to find a pre-loved hand bag at a good price. Unfortunately, so many fakes have gotten through the authenticating process I can't see myself paying more than a couple hundred on preloved/resale.

I think the "premium" fakes / replicas have played a major role here. I got a fake once already. I wouldn't trust paying a high price on any resale site as I don't even trust their authentication process. It could be an exception a consigment store where I can go see the piece myself. But a random seller online? Unsure. On the other hand, if you have a good profile with good reviews (or your case, as you are a youtube and we know you) it could be you can actually get a better deal as people will trust you took care of your item and is not fake.

For me honestly, Im not interested in the investment side. I enjoy the idea, creativity and the history of the brands. I’ve bought a couple of Diors over the years and I wouldn’t get a penny for them now. And I don’t care. I enjoyed wearing them and the memories. ✌🏾

If one purchases preloved, is the authenticity card important? Or is it only essential with styles that are typically copied? Would, for example, a Ferragamo be a brand where an authenticity card isn't necessary? Thank you!

Strange, because my impression is that people on VC still what a preposterous money for all these goods and many of them just won’t go down in price. It may be that they’re disconnected from reality, but I also think it’s disgraceful that VC even accepts some prices on used stuff. 🤷‍♀️

I dislike how so much is marketed as an investment piece, which drives up the retail price of something, but overall the vast majority of purses, bags outfits, watches, and jewelry will ever make you more money than what you paid for it. if anything the reason to buy quality goods is that they last and save you from having to rebuy that same item a quality shoe will last you years if cared for compared to a low quality 50 dollar pair of shoes, and yes the pieces like a good suit or dress may be an investment in yourself when looking for a new job or meeting with clients, and it may help build your self-confidence. in the end buy the piece because you like it and not because someone says it could be worth 5 times its value in ten years. the true value of any piece you buy is whether you wear it often or if it sits in a closet barely to be seen or worn

About a year or more ago, due to economic distortions caused by Covid policies and mass money printing, there was a boom in speculative assets including the stock market, expensive watches and purses, ETFs, virtual worlds, etc. That bubble is beginning to slowly deflate as the world faces recession and a general post Covid policy hangover. I think that now is not the time to "invest" in overpriced purses and watches.

I’m actually one of the few who is happy that Chanel has priced their classic flaps out of reach since I think too many people already own them. I think Chanel has increased their prices on purpose to keep the classic flaps more exclusive and are making more fun seasonal bags so they can sell more of them and be somewhat inclusive to those who want to wear their brand. It’s a win-win for Chanel.

Sure, great times for riches who buy in stores = price increases But hard times for middle class who buy preloved = preloved market suffers In the end, it's not the same customers at all. It will be more and more difficult to have one's money back, unless economic conditions gets better for the main people.

I actually agree and disagree with you about Chanel. As a long time client, I have sold some bags for more than double what I paid and UNDER retail. Of course, this is only if you are really a true luxury person and not a new quick flipper person that only buys the “hot bags” to try and make some money. I think this is the reason why Chanel have also increased their prices, ppl took advantage of this for the last two years😬. Imho chanel and other brands of course, over time, they do appreciate in value but only for people like myself that is into luxury and continue to purchase them because they truly love them.

Could it be that the price increases were to make the secondhand market crash? If retail goes up, then it is safe to say re-sell will go up as well and then people will have to decide if it is worth it. If most people looking to sell bought their bag within the past 5 years, they are the ones who will lose out because of the price increase. The financial slump the world is going through right now is not helping the secondhand market, the middleclass has to watch how they spend their money.

it's possible, but it would take a long time! Unlike hermes, chanel's bags are factory made. Up till the last year or so, they've been increasing supply to match demand. There are a LOT of chanel bags out there. And as sad as it is to say, just as many fakes that are of the same quality. The preloved market is very oversaturated at the moment. Sure, eventually that may decrease, but the general interest in chanel might also decrease at that point.
@indoora

@@asunbeam5479 Hi, I have pointed out to people that Chanel is trying to apply Hermes selling techniques to bags that are not made by hand and lack the quality that is produced by Hermes. Before Hermes history as a leather goods brand (most people do not realize that the Burken is a smaller version of the Haut a Courroies bag dating back to the companies equestrian roots) Because Chanel bags are machine manufactured it would not take long to flud the market when you take into account Spring/Summer, Cruise, Pre-Fall, Fall/Winter, Pre-Spring/Summer, Couture Spring/Summer and Couture Fall/Winter with bags to accompany each collection.

It's not just the low financial benefit of owning one. For me at this point it's a safety issue. These price increases are announced everywhere. There are people who know nothing about luxury who still know exactly how much a flap costs. It's easily recognizable from afar and everyone knows the logo. I just don't want this kind of attention on my things. I wear a lot of jewelry and ready-to-wear but unless you are a customer you probably won't have a clue where these things are from, and I like it that way. So no alhambra, no love bracelet, no big logo anything and no hermes. I buy the row, Jill sander, have custom jewelry made with the exception of elsa peretti pieces that I like to collect. Some people will find my wardrobe and style choices boring but I couldn't be happier with it.
