I'll bet one of the reasons they got away with their pranks was because people didn't want to dare accuse them of not being royalty. The consequences of calling them out and being wrong would have been catastrophic. Even if anyone had suspected them, they probably decided keeping their suspicions to themselves was better than risking their whole career and reputation on calling them out.

I just found a few more funny details on Wiki : On honeymoon with his first wife in Italy, on April Fools' Day 1919, Cole dropped horse manure onto Venice's Piazza San Marco-a city with no horses that could be reached only by boat and In Weymouth, the navy welcomed the princes with an honour guard. An Abyssinian flag was not found, so the navy proceeded to use that of Zanzibar and to play Zanzibar's national anthem. I bet that Cole was delighted to see that

@ 15:00 - "if there's one thing sailors don't like it's having their pants pulled down, at least not metaphorically". In my considerable experience, sailors *do* like having their pants pulled down literally. Regarding that and the thrashing, I offer a quote from Winston Churchill: "The traditions of the Royal Navy are rum, sodomy, and the lash".

Interesting story. We had a man like this in France in the 70's (I don't remember the name) but he didn't go that far as the dreadnought prank. That was bold ... This happens from time to time: I heard also a story, which proved to be correct (I was in the military, that's why), of an officer cadet who used to impersonate the President of the Republic's nephew, it was end of the 60's. He was giving as address when he was on leave, "Palais de l'Elysée" and for some time it worked. He even had an accomplice who (I don't know how) was driving him back to the officers academy in a black "DS" car. He obtained some advantages but not that much. The prank lasted 2 months and stopped on November 11th when some training officers from the academy were invited in the Elysée palace following the commemoration. They mentioned that they were honored to have the President's nephew in the Academy and ... they didn't like the answer. Eventually the prankster was fired for "psychiatric issues" and obviously the story has not been made public ... Regards

Just one major complaint, the HMS Dreadnought, the one you showed over and over the images of the wrong HMS Dreadnought, a battleship build in 1875, just a regular ship of her time, and not the HMS Dreadnought built in 1906, which was a technological marvel for the era and where the titular Dreadnought Hoax took place. These two dreadnoughts don't even look similar. Big oopsie by your editor.

and there was HMS King George V (1939) and a US fast battleship. Also Dreadnought was not the only warship to ram a German submarine in WW1, but the only BATTLESHIP to ram and sink a submarine in WW1. Smaller ships (and an ocean liner RMS Olympic) rammed several subs in both world wars. HMS Badger was the first ship to ram a German submarine in WW1.
