Sometimes the best thing about following the meta is you can tell who's genuinely GOOD at the game and who just spent a fortune on the decklist that won a few tournaments and thought they could dominate. Yugioh's not like pokemon where you only have 6 options and can narrow down what's worth using and what's not. with over 10,000 cards, there's bound to be someone creative enough to play a specific counter that only happens to work with the top meta deck of the time but when it does, it completely shuts it down. I wonder how many players hear DuelLogs say "Traps are useless cause they're too slow" so they don't expect traps to ever be played at high level only to "AHH Mirrorforce!" or "Drowning mirror force" sending all thier extra deck monsters back to the extra deck after they used up all thier fodder and banished half thier combo pieces to summon them. Love that about Duel Links. I haven't seen Enemy controller in awhile but when it does come up, it can pull an upset. and I lost to an Ojama king Lockdown once. it CAN happen!

People can run linear decks and forget certain old school mechanics like clearing fields or even double tribute lava golem (opponent's monsters)/light and darkness dragon, let alone hand destruction can bait ash blossom. I was at the event. I played full Dinos. I lost to it. Game 1 he went through a board of Baronne + Dolkka + Lars with Lava Golem + Raigeki. He survived another turn with Mirror Force and ended up OTKing me with Kozmo stuff. Game 2 he went through the same board AGAIN with Lava Golem + Dark Hole. Survived some turns with Evenly + some other outs. I proceeded with Giganto as last beater and after a couple of turns with Orochi coming out, with 1 or 2 cards in his Deck, he draw Maju and swing over Giganto. I lost in time with only 300 LP remaining.

Gren Maju and Necroface are fun cards to play with. Especially with other cards that increase life points or deal burn damage for cards banished. It literally has five win conditions: A boosted Gren Maju. A boosted Necroface. Milling your opponent. Getting an unstoppable amount of life points and stalling. Ending the game with D.D. Dynamite.

I live in Canada but I grew up in El Salvador and yes, I can confirm that product distribution as well as low turnout of players does affect tops a lot. At one point I considered travelling back and forth between Hispanic countries while matching YCS/regional events with my vacations for “easier” wins just to get invites to WCQs. A lot of players here in NA are very competitive and most don’t mind throwing their wallet into getting whichever tier 0/1 deck is currently meta for every format. So events here are much more challenging to say the least. Still really impressive that this guy went 5-0 no matter where he did it and with such a seemingly bad list and against meta relevant decks. This was me at a locals plagued by money meta decks one week, when i was still in college. I came in with a deck i made combining the (at the time) recently released dino structure deck with ultimate cunductor tyranno and soul eating oviraptor, and some basic fire kings. The deck had very few meta staples, ran torrential tribute as a 1 of, and cost me about as much as it cost to buy 3 structure decks at the time, and even then only part sof said structure deck survived before i made this nightmare. I played against 4 players, all of whom used nothing but what was the meta at the time (i personally dont remember) and for some reason, they could not stop me. I dont feel i should have won at all, but i ended up getting 2-0 out of every round. And no i too did not have a side deck. All of this to say, congrats random kozmo player, i salute you for your dedication to a deck you like using!

I won a locals with a beatdown deck. No extra deck, Seal of Orichalcos, Scapeghost for tributes, Tyrant Dragon, Ancient Gear Golem. No hand traps. Escalation of the Monarchs, March of the Monarchs and Domain of the True Monarchs along with Vanity's fiend. It doesn't stack... at all.. against today's meta. Having all your boss monsters in the extra deck and not having to draw them while I do have to draw them, by itself, gives my opponent massive advantage... but every now and then, the stars align and my stuff works. One of my matches, I played Pitch-Black Warwolf along with Domain of the True Monarchs and set Escalation of the Monarchs. Ended my turn, flipped Escalation and tribute summoned Vanity's Fiend. My opponent forfeited immediately. Good times...

I think an aspect to consider is that with a meta deck against other meta decks you know what they do and you have outs built in. Those outs can work great but you pull out the old format outs. Add some "New cards must be better" and you have a nice blindspot. It's ok though most people play the same handful of decks and you'll win a lot of games till you lose in grand finals

I've done this before with gren maju during a 2019 regional. My deck was literally Golden Castle Gren Maju 50 card count without side deck 😂. Funny enough I've gotten my invite with it.

Keep in mind that due to taxes, yugioh is a VERY expensive hobby in Brazil. Plus, Manaus is the capital of one of the poorer, and the lowest density of population state. People out here struggle to play the game IRL at all, outside of a couple cities.

I played against an insane guy who played some ridiculous deck combo with three engines. I managed to get him to use up all 8 of his negates before the battle phase, then I flipped magic cylinder for the win.
