Thranduil is my favorite character. Especially in the movies because of Lee Pace.

If the character of King Thranduil stands out or is more memorable or enjoyed than other characters from the movie trilogy that is simply a testament to the amazing acting of Lee Pace.

The only war that makes sense for Thraduil to be burned by a dragon is the War of Wrath. As he was Sindar rather than Noldor it is unlikely that he participated in most of the wars of the First Age, and he certainly would not have been in Gondolin when it fell. He own capital city was carved underground to emulate Doriath. That's the simple life he wanted to back to, and there is no mention of him being in any of the named fights. The War of Wrath, however, was an "all hands on deck!" type of situation. It is likely that is where he got his scars if indeed they were caused by dragonfire. It's the only thing that fits.

Those of us that have actually been in battle and seen conflict and earned our scars don't brag about them on KZbin. We try and push them into the back of our minds and wonder if tonight will be one of the nights you wake up in a cold sweat screaming for friends that never came home and you wonder why you did and they didn't. Real soldiers just want to forget.

So narrowing this down, there are only a few major battles which a) involved dragons, and b) involved Sindarin elves/elves of Doriath (or at least didn't explicitly state that there weren't any Sindar). The Siege of Angband had one dragon, but Doriath remained closed and did not fight. At the Dagor Bragollach, the breaking of the Siege of Angband, saw the main emergence of Glaurung the first Dragon, and I think we're getting close. Again no Sindar are stated as fighting, but they're not really mentioned. Since the land of Doriath is essentially encircled by Morgoth's forces, it's hard to imagine that they wouldn't fight, even a little bit, despite the protection of Melian. However I do feel like if Thranduil had faced Glaurung, he'd have lost a lot more than half his face, but some 16 years later, at Nírnaeth Arnoediad, Glaurung has fathered numerous lesser dragons. Therefore during the time of shortly after the Dagor Bragollach, and continuing through to the War of Wrath, Northern Beleriand, and Doriath, is under constant assault by Morgoth's forces, which include a number of fire breathing dragons. The protection of Melian ended with the death of King Thingol, some 7 years before the fall of Gondolin, and Doriath itself fell soon after, though not to the forces of Morgoth. The people of Doriath, Oropher and Thranduil among them, would then scatter, in this landscape besieged by orcs and dragons. After their attack by the sons of Feanor, they would not have sought the aid of the Noldor, nor would they have looked to the Dwarves (who had killed Thingol), they were essentially on their own, surviving as best they could, for close to 90 years, until making their way east at the end of the War of Wrath and settling in Greenwood. I would find it very unlikely that they didn't encounter at least one dragon during this time. Not all is doom and gloom however, firstly, many survivors made it to the Havens of Sirion, though it would later be destroyed by the sons of Feanor again. Secondly with the arrival of the host of the Valar in 545, presumably Morgoth would have concentrated his forces to meet the threat. My conclusion therefore is that while scattered in Beleriand, between 506 and 545 of the first Age, the survivors of Doriath faced at least one Dragon. If we assume Thranduil made it to Sirion, this would have occurred on their way to the havens. I have no evidence to support them actually making it to Sirion though, and my best guess based on their personalities, would be That Oropher and Thranduil made their way east fairly early on, with a small company of loyal elves. Over the course of many battles and losses, they survived the War of Wrath, and made it to Greenwood, having lost most, or all, of their original company.

He showed his scars to Thorin because he got mad when Thorin blamed him for being scared of dragon's fire. Thranduil reminded him that he fought against the great "serpents" of the north which were far more dangerous and greater than Smaug. He warned Thorin not to underestimate him. I'm also very impressed how Thranduil uses his magic to hide the scars. He must be very powerful with his elven magic and spells even without needing the rings. I don't understand why people think only ring bearers are considered the strongest. There were lots of elves without rings of power who were much more poweful than ring bearers. Maybe Thranduil also has very powerful magic feats that could make him equal or more powerful than ring bearers.

Granted its never stated to my knowleadge that there ever were any in the Witch kings service. But with Tranduil being so tied to the fall of Carn Dum and how he talks about how Legolas mother died as a result of it i kinda asumed it.

This funny because I watched hobbit 2 lastnight. Which is still one of my favorite LOTR movies. I absolutely love that we got so much more elf stuff in the Hobbits. Tuariel, Legalos, thrandriel. I could watch an entire movie centered just on the woodland realm. The father son dynamic is very interesting and legalos obviously loves tuariel. But ya I was thinking lastnight that I wanted to know more about the scars. He uses elf magic to keep it hidden? That's savage. How strong is he. And how much magic do the elves possess? What is the extent of thier powers and abilities?
