So was tennis player, Arthur Ashe. He achieved the Grand Slam, winning singles titles at Wimbledon, the American Open and Australian Open. He was the number 1 player in the world in 1968. Due to a congenital heart condition he required a quadruple heart bypass in 1979 at the age of 36. This required a transfusion. His transfusion predated the early reports of Gay Related Immune Disorder (GRID) which was a term used to describe what would later come to be referred to as HIV/AIDS. He died in 1993.

In many cases those people have incredibly well funded careers, with ties to the likes of Fox News and Prager U. It's not an equal comparison. I've argued with a number of right-wing people who on checking their accounts have been making videos for years and have a collective ~200 views on their 30 videos combined. They obviously think Ben Shapiro just did a good job or something and want to follow in his footsteps, though I imagine they're quite disappointed with the reality now.

It seems fitting that this video was posted on Jan. 25th since that date, among other things, is when "RENT" premiered on Broadway. It opened Jan. 25th, 1996. I'm a millennial, too (I was born in 1988), so I also grew up in the shadow of the AIDS crisis. I heard things here and there about it as a kid and of course learned about the virus itself as a teen in school. But it wasn't until I was auditioning for my college's production of "Angels in America" that I started researching what life was like at the height of the pandemic and learned just how systemic the stigmatization went. It sickened me that people could be so willfully ignorant and have no compassion because, "Well, I'm not in that group, so who cares?" or, "It only affects people I already consider amoral, so let 'em die". And seeing these things rhyming in 2021 is just heartbreaking. It makes me wonder how we'll look back on the current pandemic. Hopefully those who are currently doing nothing will be put alongside Reagan as some of history's most callous monsters.

Really great video! It breaks my heart as a queer person how much of our history is suffering at the hands of ignorance and contempt, and how much that continues on to this day. I'd never quite considered before how much the anti-Asian racism surrounding the COVID pandemic echoes the homophobia surrounding the AIDS pandemic. It's truly disturbing how reliably we, or perhaps more to the point, the people in power, fall back to bigotry and xenophobia in situations like this.

My eyeballs thoroughly enjoyed this content! I knew about some of this but the way you strung it along from colonialism through to the American AIDS Crisis filled me in on a lot and while sad and awful you made it very interesting. The point you made towards the end that a multinational corporation is making an _ideological_ choice to not allow generics/sell their treatments at prices affordable to certain people is a really great way to frame it. Reagan would be so proud of them, doubly so since his economic policies gave them such power in the first place! Overall I really liked your style, you had a good talking pace and comedic timing, and I really liked your voice/mannerisms/way of speaking. My only critique would be to balance out your sound volume/quality, especially in the scientist and 80s-doc bits. I know you were going for a certain effect but I found myself having to adjust my volume at times throughout. But otherwise awesome vid (even if about a terrible ongoing tragedy,) and I look forward to seeing more from you!

I'm so glad you got Eyeballs on this. A while back my dad insisted that the government was heavily invested in treating & supporting people with AIDS, as though it was just a natural fact that the US government would obviously care about taking care of its citizens back then (he was making a comparison of how things were "so much better back in the day") and I was just absolutely baffled at how he lived through that time with no awareness of what was actually happening. Definitely looking out for more of your content in the future!!!

Sadly for everything "The truth is out there." But people don't want the truth because it Hurts, Doesn't make people a tin of money , and it makes people that much more conscious of other issues that continue to take place.
