How different cultures celebrate the New Year

Most people follow the Gregorian calendar, which has 365 days, or 12 months in the year. So January 1st ends up being the most commonly celebrated New Year. But, depending on who you speak with, the New Year reaches far beyond January 1st.

The new year is my favorite holiday. The Chinese lunar new year is more celebrated outside of China, and it's the most important social holiday of China. Thailand also has a January 1 new year celebration. There are like a few countries with both January 1 and other dates for the new year. I am so excited about 2022 coming up soon.

The video tells about the wonderful New Year holiday. They say when is the Chinese new year. The new year is also known as the lunar new year, I didn't even know that. In traditional dress, these people celebrate the New Year, decorate the street and neighborhoods. Traditions suggest that this is a special day, on this day luck is on your side. in iran the new year starts in a different day too! it starts in spring, when everything is blooming as if with turning the year, a new life is starting. we plant some flowers instead of cutting a tree and decorating it, we just decorate a table including 7 different things starting with S in Persian and each of them is a symbol of life, health, good luck and wealth. :D i felt like you are interested in these kind of things.

Novruz it is not persian new year. The great estimate of people celebrate this day as a beginning of New Year in the earth. It is celebrated in Azerbaijan, too. Even cookies that you showed in the video belong to Azerbaijan cuisine. Pakhlava, shekerbura and etc. And also coloured eggs. We give this coloured eggs to the children in Novruz holiday. And also in this holiday has a bonfire. Everybody jumps through the bonfire for throwing negative energy in old year. And with this way people hope that all their negative energy will remain in old year, but will not come with them to the new year. And it comes from Zardushts (atesperest). All these are belongs to Azerbaijan culture and traditions. Special thanks for reading

Happy Chinese New Year!!!!FYI Lunar New Year should be called as Chinese New Year because it's based on the Chinese calendar. CNY always happens in winter. Technically, Lunar New Year is the wrong term to say because the real Lunar New Year actually happens in summer. For those of you who say Chinese New Year is not inclusive and Lunar New Year is better, you really should respect culture origin. I assume British wouldn't want people to call English as "International language" and Koreans wouldn't want people to call Kpop as "Asian Pop", right?

That being said, I'm not sure that I agree with Mr. Seljak's representation of the Jewish New Year, Rosh HaShana (literally, the "Head of the Year" in Hebrew). While it is most definitely a religious occasion which marks the beginning of the most important period of prayer and repentance for Jewish people - 10 days called the "Yomim Noraim", or the "Days of Awe" (and, more literally, "Days of Enlightenment") in English - Rosh HaShana is not "solemn" (a word which would more properly refer to Yom Kippour, that last of these 10 days of repentance). We also celebrate the two days of Rosh HaShana joyfully by sharing traditional meals with family, friends, and members of the community, the first day of Rosh Hoshana being marked by two formal seders (important religious meals with formal customs). As Persian people do for Nowrouz, we eat from an abundant table showing gratitude for the sustenance with which G-d has provided us, and we eat many symbolic foods that each correspond to specific prayers, such as: - apples and honey, a prayer for a sweet New Year ("LeShana Toba OuMetouka"); - leeks, a prayer for protection against and defeat of our enemies; - black-eyed peas and/or carrots, a prayer that our merits may increase; - pomegranate, a prayer for the bounty and abundance of our blessings; - fish, a prayer for fertility and children, that our family may live on in future generations; - the head of a fish or goat, a prayer for blessing in leadership and stewardship... The above list is indicative, and not exhaustive. On Rosh HaShana, we also say a special prayer called Tashlikh over an open body of water, which can be the sea or a river, for example, in order to cast off our sins, which is a very beautiful tradition. And, of course, as mentioned by Mr. Seljak and the above video produced by Global News, we are called to the importance of this time and the next ten days to follow by the blowing of the shofar, which has actually been blown, in any case, during each day of the month prior on the Jewish calendar, called the month of Eloul, a time of spiritual preparation for the Yomim Noraim. For Jewish people, the days of Rosh HaShana, though of very important religious weight, are also a very joyful time...not "solemn" or "muted". The solemnity follows as the Yomim Noraim progress, ending with Yom Kippour, our most important religious day and day of prayer of the year...which is then immediately followed by another period of joy: Soukkot!
