Xi'an was part of the Qin Kingdom, which unified China and established China's first imperial dynasty in 221 BC. "秦尚黑", i.e., "The people of Qin favored the color black", considering it a noble hue of that era. This historical preference for black attire endures even today, which was probably why black clothing was recommended to you.

@monipenny408 yeah, in long Chinese history, there were a lot similar things like this, such as the northern Wei dynasty, rule by tuoba clan, maybe Mongolians or something. They admire Chinese zhongyuan culture so much that even the emperor and nobilities changed their surnames to more Chinese-ish names. The inclusivity of Chinese culture is so fascinating!

When you shoot the video, most Chinese people have already taken public transportation back to their hometowns because they need to celebrate the Spring Festival with their families on February 10th. That may be why you feel like there aren't many people at the airport, because you're lucky enough to miss the most crowded time. I'm glad you enjoyed it, Happy Chinese New Year🎊🎊🎆

It IS lunar calendar that Chinese traditionally follows. There's a saying that china built the country based on agriculture 以農立國. The moon movement has great effect on water level that affects agriculture, farmers can correlate the lunar calendar with their work, and this calendar was followed by all dynasties till the modern day china switched to use solar calendar in line with international standard. Hence the Chinese New Year was set based on lunar calendar. The name Spring Festival was used in modern china to differentiate the two new years.

Please know that Chinese observe and celebrate our new year based on calculations of the lunar combined with solar calendar. Lunar new year is now commonly used by other countries. I respect if they pick their own date and call it lunar new year but we Chinese have always called it chunjie (spring festival) and appreciate it if you would say happy Chinese new year especially travelling in China and making reference to Chinese celebrations and culture. Thanks for making great content in China.

A foreigner shows up in Xi'an and a lot of people are very eager to take a picture with you, but in Xi'an 1500 years ago during the Tang Dynasty in China, the most revered city on the entire planet at the time, the locals were not at all surprised by foreign faces, and they even often see these foreigners walking through the city center of Xi'an in 1500 year ,just like the old painted artifacts, just like you and Steve did last night. Happy Chinese new year "Ken Gao Fei", May your career be like your Chinese name.

I think it's merely because of the Hanfu costume he put on. It's very rare for an international tourist like Ken to dress up like that in Xi'an. Folks would likely see them as actors, similar to those you find at Disneyland so no wonder they would want photos.

@@sonic-lu9ps China is not visited by many international tourists, compared to countries that are in Southeast Asia. Hence you hardly see people in SE Asia getting excited over foreigners that don't look like them. You'd hardly see locals there asking for photos with foreigners. Only in China that people want to take photos with foreigners, whether with or without permission. I'm a Chinese but when I go travel in Europe, even in small towns, people there don't ask for my photos because I look different. The place you are visiting is a sub-venue of the Spring Festival Gala, which is a television live broadcast program watched by almost all Chinese people around the world on New Year's Eve. The latest data shows that the viewing count has reached 210 million, possibly to prevent interruptions to the program, drones are prohibited from flying. Hope you guys enioy the holidays.

@Ken, a small suggestion for the pronunciation of Xi'an: [1] the apostrophe between Xi and an is called "glottal stop," meaning the enunciation of Xi and An should NOT be blended together -- there is no gliding from the "i" in Xi into the "A" in An. In fact, Xi and An are two characters/words in Mandarin Chinese. One would enunciate the two characters/words Xi and An distinctively in proper Mandarin Chinese. [2] the consonant of X does NOT exist in either English or German. What can be said about it is that X sounds similar to sch- in German or sh- in English, with the mouth stretched wider than the German sch- or English sh-. [3] the -an in Xi'an sounds very close to ahn in German, as in Bahnhof. [4] By the way, both the Xi and An take on the First Tone in Mandarin Chinese. Hope it helps. And Happy Chinese New Year! (Übrigens, ich kann 5 Sprachen, darunter Chinesisch.)

Happy Chinese New Year! The official name is Chinese New Year, not lunar new year. Because it is new year according to Chinese calendar, which is not a lunar calendar. Chinese calendar is Solar-lunar calendar. Some say it should not be called Chinese New Year because some other Asian countries also celebrate it. Those countries used to be under China’s influence in the ancient times. I find it a ridiculous reason. Why don’t they ask to change the name of English language, since so many people from other countries also speak it? Chinese New Year is Chinese New Year, not lunar new year. Lunar new year is according to Arabic calendar, which is completely different from Chinese calendar.

It is Chinese New Year! There is Anti-China political sentiment behind so called lunar new year, very disrespective and ill-willed! Every one can celebrate their own tradition new year based on their own lunar calendar, but don't twist Chinese New Year, I take it as culture genocide!

对,让改成月历年本就荒唐,更何况根本用的就不是月历。中国新年是农历新年,阴阳合历的。其他亚洲国家要叫lunar new year ,那就请另外找个时间过你们的。

What is banned is personal fireworks, you cannot carry and launched your own personal fireworks, but you can get an exemption if you work in an organization that has proven that you will launch firework safely and responsibly, very few care enough to get this exemption. Most people that want to see fireworks usually go to a third tier cities or countryside where fireworks are allowed.

The Spring Gala is just too long, 4 hrs long. And only a few items I'm amazed by it, like the 大鱼 dance (on wire) and the 民族 section which is different. The rest are kinda boring which most foreigners would not understand it anyway, like comedy skit, which is too long.

Lol there is a huge debate going on in China about fireworks in Chinese New Year. Some people just love the CNY vibes it brings while the other side just hate the air pollution and danger of damaging people. So officially it is not encouraged, but still there are designated areas where fireworks are allowed, mostly suburban and wide-open areas
