Xi'an was part of the Qin Kingdom, which unified China and established China's first imperial dynasty in 221 BC. This historical preference for black attire endures even today, which was probably why black clothing was recommended to you.

@monipenny408 yeah, in long Chinese history, there were a lot similar things like this, such as the northern Wei dynasty, rule by tuoba clan, maybe Mongolians or something. They admire Chinese zhongyuan culture so much that even the emperor and nobilities changed their surnames to more Chinese-ish names. The inclusivity of Chinese culture is so fascinating!

Actually the official name of the festival is the Spring Festival. Or in China we simply call it New Year. It’s definitely not Lunar New Year, coz it’s not based on the lunar calendar. It’s traditional Chinese lunar-solar calendar.

omg thank you! I've been saying THIS! Nobody who's Chinese would ever call it Lunar New Year! White people from the west started calling it Lunar New Year because of Chinese hate! And that's racist AF.
@kentonkwok74819 ай бұрын
yup, lunar new hear is like saying happy holidays. In China, it's Spring Festival or Chinese New Year, or New Year. In Vietnam, its tet. Each w/ different customs.
It IS lunar calendar that Chinese traditionally follows. There's a saying that china built the country based on agriculture 以農立國. The moon movement has great effect on water level that affects agriculture, farmers can correlate the lunar calendar with their work, and this calendar was followed by all dynasties till the modern day china switched to use solar calendar in line with international standard. Hence the Chinese New Year was set based on lunar calendar. The name Spring Festival was used in modern china to differentiate the two new years.

A foreigner shows up in Xi'an and a lot of people are very eager to take a picture with you, but in Xi'an 1500 years ago during the Tang Dynasty in China, the most revered city on the entire planet at the time, the locals were not at all surprised by foreign faces, and they even often see these foreigners walking through the city center of Xi'an in 1500 year ,just like the old painted artifacts, just like you and Steve did last night. @Ken, a small suggestion for the pronunciation of Xi'an: [1] the apostrophe between Xi and an is called "glottal stop," meaning the enunciation of Xi and An should NOT be blended together -- there is no gliding from the "i" in Xi into the "A" in An. In fact, Xi and An are two characters/words in Mandarin Chinese. One would enunciate the two characters/words Xi and An distinctively in proper Mandarin Chinese. [2] the consonant of X does NOT exist in either English or German. What can be said about it is that X sounds similar to sch- in German or sh- in English, with the mouth stretched wider than the German sch- or English sh-. [3] the -an in Xi'an sounds very close to ahn in German, as in Bahnhof. [4] By the way, both the Xi and An take on the First Tone in Mandarin Chinese. Hope it helps. And Happy Chinese New Year! (Übrigens, ich kann 5 Sprachen, darunter Chinesisch.)

Happy Chinese New Year! The official name is Chinese New Year, not lunar new year. Because it is new year according to Chinese calendar, which is not a lunar calendar. Chinese calendar is Solar-lunar calendar. Some say it should not be called Chinese New Year because some other Asian countries also celebrate it. Those countries used to be under China’s influence in the ancient times. I find it a ridiculous reason. Why don’t they ask to change the name of English language, since so many people from other countries also speak it? Chinese New Year is Chinese New Year, not lunar new year. Lunar new year is according to Arabic calendar, which is completely different from Chinese calendar.

Cuz it is our own Chinese's New Year, but the neighboring countries are also celebrating the Chinese New Year under the influence of Chinese culture, should we change the name of our Chinese New Year?

1:58 That remark was super funny. The Canadian Couple aka " the Jetlag Warriors " is one of my favourite travellers' channels on KZbin. Great Companions Ken, Steve and Ivana and the local people for the CNY! Joyous Theatrical Festive and Friendly!

What is banned is personal fireworks, you cannot carry and launched your own personal fireworks, but you can get an exemption if you work in an organization that has proven that you will launch firework safely and responsibly, very few care enough to get this exemption. Most people that want to see fireworks usually go to a third tier cities or countryside where fireworks are allowed.

I think a good amount of people stayed at home watching the Spring Festival Gala with their family. If you have the chance Ken, I recommend you watch it too, just to get the vibe~

The Spring Gala is just too long, 4 hrs long. And only a few items I'm amazed by it, like the 大鱼 dance (on wire) and the 民族 section which is different. The rest are kinda boring which most foreigners would not understand it anyway, like comedy skit, which is too long.
Lol there is a huge debate going on in China about fireworks in Chinese New Year. Some people just love the CNY vibes it brings while the other side just hate the air pollution and danger of damaging people. So officially it is not encouraged, but still there are designated areas where fireworks are allowed, mostly suburban and wide-open areas

Mr Ken … how about you going to Xinjiang . Go until Taskurgan .. China border with Pakistan,,,, visit Taklamakan desert. You will feel just like transform to Middle East or Central Asia , but still in China. Try using the green train . You can feel how welcoming Chinese people towards you on the train. Buy hard sleeper tickets,,, you stomach will be full with people sharing their food along the way. Stay safe and stay happy

The problem is now it's too cold. It's better to go to xinjiang during spring or autumn. Since it's so cold now, it's better to go to either really North like harbin, or go to really south like hainan.

It’s not about the cold temperatures. It’s about warm and welcoming Chinese people. Contra to western culture and western media reporting about China and mainland Chinese people. Stay safe and stay happy.

The scenery in Xinjiang is the most beautiful in spring and summer.

But Xinjiang was touted by the US as oppressive and regimented place. I have not been there but I surely enjoyed Xian. I enjoyed the spicy skewed lamb & various local foods 👍
