Imho, the humor and writing of this show, mixed with the art and designs of Eltingville Club, would’ve been a big hit. Not to be harsh but Clerks animated designs always looked like a bad version of the Eltingvile characters to me, the Eltingvile designs are just way more appealing and less generic. Clerks writing holds up, though. PS. 0:48 no one of the Gainax team had any involvement in the FLCL new episodes. It was merely their corrupt CEO liscensing FLCL out, to a different company to try and make some quick cash, as Gainax was in Finnancial decline from his horribleness, as everyone relevant from Gainax had already jumped shipped to new studios.

To be clear, while _Clerks_ was shot with a camera capable of capturing color (an Arriflex 16SR - which actually is professional-grade, albeit on the low end), the film used (Kodak Plus-X 16mm) was black-and-white. In other words, no color negatives exist.

Also even with all the things working against CNN+ from the beginning, the remarkable shortness of how long it was operating always seemed a bit _too_ overly cautious and made many people familiar with Zaslav’s burned bridges at that network suspicious of *other motivating factors* behind it’s quick cancellation. Everyone credits South Park with kickstarting the second adult animation boom, but in the process, they forget that King of the Hill also premiered in 1997, the same year as SP and got ratings just as high as the Simpsons in its first couple seasons. You can easily see how having three smash hit adult cartoons on television simultaneously would motivate every network to play follow the leader without knowing how to actually play the game. PS Lando’s gonna return in Clerks III
@lifeguardpanda2 жыл бұрын
The thing is King Of The Hill aired on Fox so it had a jump start with a bigger viewer base. South Park was aired on Comedy Central (a recently created tv network), who was hoping for a hit. South Park literally skyrocketed Comedy Central's brand within a year. That's why the movie happened so fast. Do you understand how hard it is to have a show air in a unknown medium on a not very known network and suddenly gain the same viewership as major television networks... on cable. That's unprecedented. Not to mention how vulgar the show was. That caused a opening for adult animation. Previously, basic cable tv didn't have that vulgar content.

Weird tho his least favorite show to work on was Phineas and Ferb. He mentioned the show was inconsistent in its design motifs. Like some characters were just shapes while others were odd shapes and others just had regular heads and bodies. Also the eyes were different across all the characters so it bothered him they werent kept a consistent style either. Mentioned how eyes are like a unifier and a defining feature of a style. That's how it is with any trend. One thing becomes a success and investors go "Great! Give me ten more just like it!" I’d only think that crossover idea would work if the Disney characters were either parodies of themselves, or very self aware that they had no reason to be there in some way. The only Disney characters I could imagine appearing without any changes are the 2017 Ducktales cast and the Gravity Falls cast because they were both always very self-aware and remarkably cynical (for a Disney property). Seriously, as long as a Ducktales 2017 episode kept the original message or moral from the old Carl Barks comics, they seemingly could do whatever they wanted. I’d _never_ seen someone outside of Walt Disney’s original partners and Walt himself get so much free reign to do whatever they wanted with some of his characters before!

Imagine an alternate timeline where UPN nabbed it instead. They probably would have given Clerks: TAS a second run of production, and the synergy may have given Home Movies and Dilbert longer runs. (oh Dilbert, you were so ahead of your time...)

@@MungkaeX same, honestly, think the main issue people had was that they focused on Teela in this. That’s when people should’ve realized the title was Masters of the Universe and not He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Besides, would anyone really would’ve killed off He-Man permanently?
@MungkaeX2 жыл бұрын
@@Cross177 Even if they were going to permanently kill off He-Man, why would they do it Episode 1 if not to bring them back? Love it or Hate it, the story Revelations told was simply more interesting using Teela as the audiences primary PoV character.

@MungkaeX2 жыл бұрын
@@adeptdamage3669 Yeah, I really disliked the art style of She-Ra too. The story was good (at least till the final season when they gave Catra an undeserved redemption). I appreciated how many Easter Eggs it dropped for long time fans of the series. It wasn’t a straight beat for beat remake, but was entertaining none the less.

I was in college, around 2003 or 2004, when a friend of mine introduced me to the works of Kevin Smith. Soon I found myself buying all his movies (and this show) on DVD. I actually found myself watching the audio commentaries on those dvds more than the actual movies/shows, themselves.

Great video! I really hope Clerks Animated comes back one day. I remember watching reruns on Adult Swim and really enjoying it. Disney must know that the show has a niche fanbase so hopefully at some point Kevin Smith can get the rights back.

I certainly never caught the series on ABC. I didn't see it until it popped upon Comedy Central, and that led me to pick up the DVD a bit later. The show really impressed me with how it managed to maintain the Clerks feel while also having fun with the animated format. It's definitely among the strongest adult animated series of the 2000s.

Such a good show, the restraints wound up hitting on such a timely humor of wild antics without the obvious lowbrow humor complete freedom would have afforded. I pop in this DVD every time there's a lengthy Internet outage, which is far more often than I would like. The series as a whole still holds up, but some of the jokes are a little hard to watch with 20 years' hindsight.

I worked at a comic shop at the time, and we made a point to catch it live. Yes, the broadcast order was confusing. We were running the convention circuit and one of us picked up the series (all six episodes) bootleg on VHS. We shotgunned it all the same night in the hotel room and "Bear is driving" was beaten into the ground very quickly, but is still used around here. Thanks for putting this all together. I forgot about it in the meantime, so I never heard any of the DVD commentary or the story around the production.

I saw Clerks when I was only ten or eleven years old, thanks to having a brother 16 years older than me. I was obsessed from the first time I watched it. When I visited him in LA a year or two later, there was only one place I really wanted to see... the west coast location of Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash (RIP). As an early birthday gift, my brother took me there, and I scored two autographed Clerks Inaction Figures that I still have in the packaging today (Series 1 Jay signed by Jason & Silent Bob signed by Kevin). But the best thing I walked away with, was an autographed copy of something I had never seen nor heard of before; Clerks the Animated Series. Every couple years, I pop in one of the discs and watch an episode. It is an absolute gem of a show. Sharing it with my friends back in the day, everyone thought it was hilarious. It didn't matter if they had seen Clerks or not. I'll remain a Kevin Smith/SMOD/TESD fan forever. Oh, and I'm 99% sure that Bryan Johnson was behind the counter that day, pretending to feign interest while a customer talked about how he couldn't understand why his wife's favorite Kevin Smith film was Chasing Amy.

according to Wikipedia, the clerk movies are owned by Miramax, which Disney sold to beIN Media Group in 2009, which was turned into a joint venture in 2020 with Paramount Global buying a 49% stake in the company giving them the rights to the Miramax films catalog, while the animated series was produced and distributed under Disney's Animation studio and their ABC/TV Division. (yes Disney owns ABC) so basically if it would return, Paramount would have to convince Disney to hand over the rights to the animated series, and reboot the show on either CBS or strength to Paramount+
