How Does Vivos’ DNA Device Work? How DNA and Homeoblock Appliances Get Adult Palatal Expansion and Facial Symmetry
The Vivos device works by stimulating bone growth in the mouth, facial structures and nasal passageways. It has been referred to as a biomimetic device because it stimulates facial bone to start growing again. This is a specific example of epigenetics. The DNA results in new growth of the upper airway and the upper and lower jaws. The therapy grows the upper airway size and balances the jaw structures in a more open and forward position. Night time airway obstructions can be prevented (such as the tongue falling back into the throat). Breathing patterns during sleep can normalize such as more nasal breathing and less mouth breathing. With more room in the mouth the tongue fits better in the mouth. With forward growth of the jaw, the tongue postures and lives further away from the the throat and airway. Vivos therapy allows the bite to be optimized for better biomechanical and neuromuscular function.
But how specifically do adult anterior growth appliances such as the Vivos DNA device and the Homoeoblock work. How does the growth happen and what happens to all the other cranial bones such as the zygoma, sphenoid, frontal, temporal and occipital bones. All the bones in the head fit together like a puzzle, so there must be changes during expansion of the maxilla. And how does the mandible change. And what happens to the bite and the upper and lower teeth relationships?
In this video Dr Adams goes over how all the bones can grow and become more balanced if the proper techniques are used during treatment with the DNA and Homeoblock appliances.
DNA Appliance Grows the Upper Airway
Vivos DNA appliance therapy promotes growth of the airway and improves balance to the bite and jaw structures. The result is a less obstructed airway, better night-time nasal breathing patterns and improvements in jaw tension and teeth clenching symptoms. And yes, you can retire the graveyard of dental appliances and CPAP. You will not need them anymore.
Causes of Sleep Apnea and TMJ Pain:
Airway obstruction and poor breathing patterns during sleep.
Bite imbalance and teeth clenching during the day and night.
Small mouth, large tongue, poor tongue posture and function (such as a thrust or tie) and large tonsils.
Stress, weight gain and eating too many soft foods during childhood.
Mouth breathing instead of nasal breathing
How Does DNA Therapy Progress?
The removable appliance is only worn at night and taken out during productive daytime hours
light pressure compared to braces and never orthodontic pain
easy adjustments made at home approximately every 2 weeks for adults
evaluations and adjustments by Dr. Adams approximately every 3 months
treatment usually takes 12-18 months on the average
1-2 months in a retainer and treatment is complete.
Throw the appliances away. No need to wear an appliance anymore. Your condition should be corrected.
The Vivos Device is Unique because it Works for Adults.
There many options for kids expanders and anterior growth appliances. Learn more about holistic orthodontics and how Dr. Adams treats children. Very few appliances work for adult forward growth and airway development. It is never a good idea to pull teeth for braces. It is best to promote growth in jaw structures, so all teeth have space fit properly into the mouth. The Vivos is the best orthopedic therapy to resolve conditions related to extraction and retraction orthodontics.
How Does the Homeoblock Appliance Compare to the DNA?
They are basically the same appliance except for the spring used is a little different. The Homeoblock appliance works for adults and can be designed to do the same thing as the DNA. Dr. Belfor invented the Homeoblock and he used to work with Dr. Singh (inventor of the DNA). There is more research to back up the DNA, but Dr. Adams believes the appliances do the same thing. The Homeblock is not FDA cleared.

I'll see what I can do David. Thanks for asking. It is a little difficult because a practitioner needs to get the proper legal consent and it is debatable as to how to do that. Also, everyone is a little different and you never want to create a false expectation. What usually happens is docs pic the most extreme before and after photos and then people are disappointed. There is a lot more to treatment thank "expanding the palate." What really needs to happen is the jaws need to grow forward, wider and taller. There are also changes in the relationship of the different facial bones that needs to happen. If all that happens is expansion, people are not going to get better.

The appliance does push on the teeth but very lightly. It applies a light constant stretch that along with the appliance spring will 1) create an increase in bone activity in the jaws and 2) growth in the direction of the stretch. It takes a long time in an adult.

I have gone thru 2 years of Vivos treatment and now have major gaps and tipping/flaring of my back molars after 8 mm expansion on the upper and about half that on the lower. This will require significant orthodontics to fix my teeth and bite now. Is this a typical outcome you see? I was told to expect minor orthodontic work, but never expected this. The orthodontists I have talked to do not believe I achieved any significant bone growth, but rather just tipping of my teeth.

First, I am sorry you had that experience. Just a couple things: 1) you probably did not expand the appliance in the most optimal way. watch this video about when to adjust the DNA appliance. kzbin.info/www/bejne/goiQaWunZ6icnLM 2) Wait 6-12 months before doing the orthodontics or you will lose some of the results of your case. @@SereneOrthodontics You may be right about not expanding in the optimal way, but it's more than a little frustrating if this is the case, since I went to an office with extensive experience using VIVOS, and I wore the appliance 18+ hrs per day for 2 years, visited the dentist office every 6 weeks for adjustments, and only expanded the appliance when it began getting loose (every 1-3 weeks) as directed by the VIVOS dentist office who was monitoring my progress and wasn't concerned about the flaring of my back teeth that became obvious after several months of treatment. I'm at the end of my appliance expansion capability, and I still have sleep apnea, with screwed up teeth and bite, and now will have to go thru orthodontic treatment for up to more 2 years. My VIVOS dentist office is recommending CandidPro to fix my teeth and get 2 implants in my upper teeth which would be additional cost and time. My lower teeth only expanded about half of what my upper did which concerns every orthodontist I have visited since my bite is so out of alignment. One orthodontist told me I'm not the first he has seen with the exact same story after using VIVOS. Sorry, I'm 60 yrs old and could never recommend this kind of treatment for anyone.

@@SereneOrthodontics I read this about someone else who is in his 50s. His dentist theorized that it is hard to change palette structure in any adult but much harder in older males as their palette has a stronger bone. That why only his teeth tipped. Regarding the part of the expander you turn to move it forward to achieve forward growth... how is it possible for the upper palate to grow forward if there is no suture there? There is only the suture down the middle of the palate that opens expanding wider. Do you believe that the body has intelligence that makes the palate expand forwards without a suture just simply from pressure? Also, I have read from professionals promoting devices like the Homeoblock about the lower jaw (mandible) swinging forward by just using an expander like this. How is this possible with just expansion of the palate in width and maybe in length / forwards? Wouldn't it just affect the upper jaw (maxilla) and not the position of the lower jaw (mandible)? The reason I believe the lower jaw (mandible) is too far back is because the upper jaw (maxilla) is too far down and back, which pushes the lower jaw (mandible) down and backwards into the airway. For the lower jaw (mandible) to come forwards, the whole upper jaw (maxilla) needs to be moved up and forwards, right? This is why some people use face masks attached to bands connected to the upper jaw expander to pull the upper jaw up and forwards. And this is why people report success from simply having the tongue on the roof of the mouth, which not only acts as an expander, but pushes / puts pressure on the upper jaw to hold it up and even move it up and forwards.
@SereneOrthodontics
@SereneOrthodontics 5 ай бұрын
You ask some very good questions. First off the upper jaw can experience growth and movement between the other bones that surround it. The maxilla moving upwards and forwards is something that can be stimulated in part by creating a neutral bite plane on the upper appliance. The bite plane has a lot to do with the lower jaw posture position. If you can control the lower jaw posture position, which ultimately will move it in response to Growth and changes in position to the upper jaw. I’m not sure this is the exact forum to go into answering all these questions, but I am going to paste a link to a video I did that is very long and goes into a lot of detail. Tongue and lip ties and Myo facial muscle work needs to be done by a qualified Myofunctional Therapist. Any lip tongue and cheek ties need to be released. These are the muscles that messed things up to begin with. If they are corrected trained and strengthened, you will not need a facemask or any other pulling gadgets. The facial muscles will re-orient things on their own. You should study about the pre-maxilla. The maxillary incisors develop separately in the premaxilla and there are sutures between the premaxilla and the maxilla. We get some (not tons) of forward growth here. The rest of the Forward growth comes from the Maxilla moving forward between the maxilla and the bone structure behind it.

I've been using the Homeoblock Device for about 11 months now. So far, I have not noticed any improvements in my sleep apnea symptoms. I actually get more relief by dropping my Body fat percentage under 10% than I do from an expansion of my upper jaw and forward movement of the lower jaw. For $10,000, this device is like snake oil -- worthless.

The only thing the appliance does is make your mouth bigger. We integrate myofunctional therapy and necessary tongue and lip tie releases.
