There are more differences. While most dual-SIM phones probably only have data on one SIM at a time, a Note 8 from Thailand had 2g/3g/4g on the data active SIM, but 2g/3g on the other SIM. All other dual-SIM phones I’ve seen only have 2g on the other SIM.

So many questions... 1) Does is tell you which line the incoming call is coming from? If it's on silent I won't hear the different ringtones 2) Like someone else asked, how do you differentiate between say business & personal line incoming texts 3) I see that you can set the default calls from a SIM card. What if I use both lines frequently? Is there an option while dialing to always switch like in text?

1. Yes, it tells you which line is coming in on, you can actually change the names of them. I have mine labeled as Business and Personal. I haven't had a dual SIM phone that allowed a different ringtone for each SIM, though I haven't specifically checked on my current phone (OnePlus Nord N30) that I just got a couple days ago. My others have been Google Pixel 4a and 4a5g. 2. Just like incoming calls, texts will also show which line they were delivered to or sent from. If you text somebody from both lines they will both show on the same text thread. 3. When dialing you can set it to ask every time, or there is a button to hit to switch lines, so it would hang up and immediately dial on the other line. You can set individual contacts to default to a specific SIM. If you take a SIM out/turn one off then, at least by my experience, you will lose all of the defaults you have set in your contacts.

I use an app called SIDELINE on my iphone. Creates a fully functional call/text/sms second line using my current carrier, ATT. Unlike Google Voice, or other third party second line apps, this one acts just like the native phone app. The phone "rings" and you answer as you normally would (I suggest set it up that you press 1 to take the call) and you know when it's a Sideline call coming in.

Thanks for the video. I was wondering how it works. Also makes it possible to use T-Mobile's free international texting overseas to stay in touch with people in the US while also having a local number to use overseas. Too bad voice call to/from US would still cost extra. Even Wi-Fi calling I think.

Peizxcv Try going to airplane mode and activating wifi before trying wifi calling. Might work. And wifi calling should per definition cost the same as if you’re in country. If you don’t place it in airplane mode, you would be roaming, and get those charges, even if you thought you were using wifi calling.

On reflection, reference my previous comment, data isn't sent to a phone number - I control which SIM I use for my data connection, (both sending and receiving), so the SIM settings should be capable of restricting roaming charges, (if any, to a single SIM.

Fascinating. Now that cellphone makers have gotten away from adding SIM's and additional memory SD Cards, it is needed now more than every. I have a Galaxy S21. I ran out of internal memory. When I bought it, I wasn't paying much attention, I just needed 5G. I didn't know that it didn't have an external SD slot. You need the memory for pictures and movies. I'm out of luck.

HI i am looking for a dual sim phone dual active. I live in two countires and travel back and forth. when in Europe i only use the phone over the wireless carrier network, but i have a US SIM for a us number that i can use with wifi-calling mode while in Europe. In the states i want to reverse that. EU sim set to wifi-calling and US sim set to local us carrier. I can never get a clear answer to see if that is doable. The only thing i have found is an English/Swiss device that supports one sim and blue tooth to the phone. i would like to have the ability to move back and forth between active calls gracefully without have to change settings to accomodate a new call when it comes in. can you suggest a device

Provided you’re on a network that includes 2g. Some countries and some networks are moving away from 2g. Unless you get a phone that has 3g available for the non-data enabled SIM, you’re secondary SIM would not work if it’s on a non 2g network.

Update from my earlier comment: There are now dual-LTE phones. Just a few years ago that wasn’t possible, and my earlier phone had only 2g for the secondary SIM. So today you just have to do some googling to figure out which phones will work even without a 2g network. You can usually guess from which chip they have, and then do some additional searching. The lists I’ve seen are not necessarily up to date, though, so check in the store too, if you can’t find the info online. Mine has if, and I could find no info online about that.

Yup, it will just share whatever internet it's getting normally - so as long as it's drawing on the unlimited SIM for its 4G most of the time, that's also what it will share over the hotspot - Dom

Annoyingly, I'm not aware of any that let you do dual-SIM and microSD at the same time - all the ones I'm aware of either don't support microSD, or use the second SIM slot for it - Dom

I think the "Standby" or the "Passive" option would be better for me. I only going to use the 2nd SIM card like 4 times a year. I want to make sure I don't make the mistake of using that SIM card when I am using my phone in the day to day basis. With dual sim can you have dual contacts? A wall of sorts that won’t allow contacts from the other number to be contacted ie separate out work and personal so you never accidentally contact someone?

Yes, you can store contacts on each sim. Only store the ones you want to call from that specific sim.
