Good explanation of how the basic system works. I was hoping for an explanation and demonstration of how the one way clutch in the planetary carrier works. I have been unable to find any videos that show this. You touched on it when you showed the two keys in the axle. That is what locks the carrier to the axle but only in one direction. When coasting the carrier is released by the clutch and allowed to turn with the wheel. That way, while coasting, the whole gear system turns with the wheel and does not cause the cogging resistance present in a direct drive hub motor.

Hi Ron, the keys on the axle hold the carrier to the axle in both directions, but what engages and disengages the carrier is actually inside the carrier. It’s a riveted enclosed mechanism which I wasn’t able to show in the video, but imagine a paw clutch like the freewheels you see on rear bicycle wheels

Hey thanks for your comment. Metal gears need more lubrication and are noisey but they last longer than nylon gears. The external gear ring gear can be replaced when deemed necessary

Great information on these. My Heybike Brawn has this setup but I went through the nylon gears in 5 months. Im heavier than most and itll push 1500 watts with the 48 volt system. There doesn't seem to be much information on the helical planetary systems. Ive looked and I can't find a 3 gear set of new with clutch but it appears ebike pro maybe selling individual nylon gears in helical but is listed as a reduction gear. Anyone know about this? I want the steel or hybrid of steel and nylon or poly, anyone have a link to steel gears or further information about why you can't buy a set with a new clutch? After looking at my motor, it appears a hole may be able to be drilled and tapped to install a grease nipple. Don't over grease and clean out old grease and filings periodically.

We dont work with that motor manufacturer, it was a one off job we resolved the issue. Try pedalling the bike when taking off, it prevent torque build up on the motor gears

I have the same helical cut planetary system . unfortunately it has been destroyed by water and is completely locked up. I am having trouble finding a replacement set. Do you have a line on the parts? thanks.

There are many greases you could use. Like Lithium grease/ high temp grease for coupling metal-x--metal gears and high temp grease for coupling nylon-x-metal gears

@@Cyberbikesau Is there any reason why normal grease you'd use with nylon gears (such as parktool polylube 1000 polyurea based lubricants) wouldn't work in a system with steel or copper gears? I've seen people suggest that using lithium based grease is extremely messy and not reccomended for greasing planetary gears, but I know that advice is normally given for standard applications with nylon gears.
